Be careful this spring!

Bridger is shut down today because of some in-bounds avalanches. They got 9" of snow with 1.8" SWE last night, and apparently that was another tipping point for the facets at the ground. Bridger Gully, Sluice Box, and Morning Glory Bowl all went to the ground apparently, here's a few screen shots I grabbed off their webcams.

Check out the dirt at the top middle:

This is the main access to all the runs off of Bridger:

There aren't any cameras showing Morning Glory, but that one would have been massive. It's the top left of this photo:

Be careful out there! Although things generally stabilize in the spring, this year a lot of areas have shitty layers at the bottom of the snowpack that are failing. In SW Montana we've had quite a few big avalanches that broke at the ground in the past few weeks, and there's not much hope for surviving something like that. I just want to give everyone a heads up so we're all aware of what the snow is like this year, be safe!

what? ski run names arent exclusive to one resort?!!!

are you telling me the there are more than 1 "lake view", "gun barrel", and "outer limits" runs in the whole USA?

SW Colorado also has a HUGE facet layer on the bottom of the snowpack. It was causing a shit ton of problems a couple months ago. Havent been up to the BC in about a month, so I'm not sure what the snowpack profile looks like right now. But hopefully the snowpack has consolidated enough so that it wont be an issue for the rest of the season.

Damn, i can only imagine shit over on slushies is probably very dangerous too. sketch season.

definitely agree. I was there up at Bridger presidents break and slushmans was closed like half the week. The coverage was getting a lot better but it still wasn't too good. Didnt even really want to hike up to the ridge because I really didn't know my way around. On a brighter note Bridger is still sick.

The funny part is that they had to delay the Bridger Gully Freeride comp because of lack of snow in February, and now they'll have to cancel it because all the snow is at the bottom.

just got back from a day of touring. Up in the West Kootenays of BC (actually, most of BC) we had a two week dry spell in early February which has just mucked everything up. It's been really frustrating because just as everything finally starts filling in and ready to charge, the avi conditions have been poop.

We got 20cm last night and the sun was out with a force this morning. While we didn't get to see anything go, there was evidence from pretty much everything east facing letting go from the early morning sun. Stuck to north trees and got out of there sooner than planned. Almost decided to hang out and see what the sun was going to do to the west faces around us, but it clouded over and started snowing. Another 15cm forecast for tonight and more on Thursday pushing the avi rating back up to high (where it's sat for the majority of this past month.

Hoo-hum.

One of the A-Z's slid to the ground today, all the gullies slid, and it looked like something went in the Big today too.... Can't imagine the backcountry around Big Sky or Bozeman or anywhere in SW Montana for that matter is very stable...
