BBC World news article about urban skiing

I was just browsing my twitter and all of a sudden I see a news article posted by BBC World, (a twitter account with 5.5 million followers) talking about the hazards of urban! They even quote none other than Krazy Karl, Sandy Boville and Logan Imlach talking about how they are poor as piss.

To be honest this article is better than any single one I saw come out of the olympics, there are certainly some gaper ish terms but if people want "the other side" of the sport to be showcased ths is doing just that.

I don't think it was that bad at all. I sort of got the feeling they're trying to portray us as rebels or similar to how they'd portray skateboarders. Just a bit, I don't think they were strongly in any direction other than being informative.

that was actually not a bad article they used good references and explained it well to people who wouldn't know anything about urban skiing

I'm not sure if you can see the accompanying video in the US, but Level 1 are stacking urban shots. Some of what they're doing looks so sick.

I dont think they "forgot" step, they did only mention four athletes all who happened to be on a trip with level one at the time.

This article wanst meant to be a comprehensive look at all urban skiing. I think they did a great job at exposing the general public this side of our sport in a simple concise way, while at the same time making us look like bad asses.

Why? Did you even read it?

It was a pretty good article. Wasn't talking down the sport or anything. Just an informative article on a trend that is growing is skiing.

They did a pretty good job on it, sounds like they talked with the skiers about stuff so they were well informed.

It was actually a correspondent from BBC. They sent out a reporter and a videographer to follow us around for 2 days. It was definitely interesting but I think the end result turned out quite well. I mean it could have been better if Khai Krepela hadn't "declined to ski one day because his "mood" wasn't right." hahah

Now that the public is taking notice, do you think it will be more difficult to get out and do urban?

Also, I wonder how many more people are doing Urban now-a-days vs. 5 to 10 years ago.

In the video it was noticeable how the filmer improved at filming urban over the trip haha

Some of his shots were dreadful, but some others were almost the kind I'd expect to see in a movie.

Street skier's lexicon

  • Gnarly: Big, scary, dangerous
  • Tranny: Angled landing
  • Wall ride: sliding bases of skis along vertical surface
  • Mashed potatoes: Wet and thick snow
  • Butter: Rotating on only edges, noses, or tails of skis
  • Wu-Tang: Gradient of a jump (e.g. "this jump has a lot of wu-tang")
  • Burly: See "gnarly"

lol.

How long have we been referring to the gradient of a jump as wu-tang hahah?

The article is suprisingly on point though. Good exposure.

Haha that came out way better than I expected. It was cool though, the dude that wrote it was genuinely intrigued by what we do, and you can tell by that outcome.

Doesn't that ruin the point? That is, unless it was something like 'X games real ski street'.

Half the point of urban is finding your spot, seeing what you want to do and then build it to do exactly that. I don't quite see how that would happen in an organised comp. Call me a hipster, but I think urban should stay just as it is, underground. More people following = more money which is good; but hell we don't want lots of people following, because that means lots of money, which means there are people that do it for the money. I often ask myself the question "why do I like freeskiing?" and normally it boils down to the fact that almost no-one, if anyone at all, is in freeskiing for money.

Agreed, best report on skiing yet. I was very happy with the way the portrayed urban as sometimes illegal, but also included the respect level that skiing community and law enforcement usually have for one another.

Maybe the Olympics weren't as bad as people thought they were going to be? I never thought I would be seeing an article constructively explaining urban skiing to the non-skiing community on BBC. On top of that, some style-based riders are getting the right exposure from this as well. This is pretty cool to me!

This is actually a really good article. Most of the articles/videos that have been written about skiing during/since the Olympics have been pretty cringe worthy, however this actually pretty simply showed what urban skiing is all about, without any weird commentary. That video was good, great interviews, pretty good shots as well.

The side bar on urban slang was kind of gaper, but hey, overall that was by far the best coverage on skiing I've seen since we got famous.
