Barefoot Waterskiing

So, I was just meandering around youtube in boredom when I came upon this video:/static/images/flash_video_placeholder.png
This sport looks ridiculous but my question is, how hard is it to actually do? Anybody ever tried? Because it seems like something that would be fun to go try tomorrow.

Stupid doesn't worry me because I think it would be funny to learn, but difficult worries me. Also I basically just want to be able to do the thing at 2:20.

its REALLY fucking hard, it really only works right if the water is completely glass and it hurts so fucking bad when you fall, not just when it happens, but for hours afterwards.

its incredibly fuckin hard to do.

plus it hurts like a bitch if you fall cuz your goin like 40mph minimum depending on the weight

hmmm, this thread is definitely making me less stoked to try it out, especially the toes thing. They look like they are having so much fun though.

its really fun and not incredibly hard

i've done it a decent amount and if you learn the right way it's pretty easy and you don't take that many 40mph crashes. its an amazing feeling to be riding around barefoot, you feel like jesus

the toes thing is completely intuitive. you just need to curl them up, it's not very hard. i thought i'd forget all the time but its not an issue. the thing you do need to remember is to close the gap between your big toe and 2nd toe otherwise water shoots up in a concentrated stream and hits you directly in the balls

i can throw down. all summer long. it's not hard, but it can hurt. if you can get past the initial beatings that you take learning, then it's not too bad. you kind of learn how to fall, so most of the time it looks a lot worse than it is.

grab a wakeskate and ride that instead. this thing doesnt even look fun, the falls look like they hurt and you cant even carve (?)

wakeskating, you go like 1/3 the speed of water skiing and you can do carves and shit even if its your first time.

not to be "that guy" but its hard to believe this is real. I dont think the surface area of your foot could make this work

Judging by his name, I think this guy may know what's up. The picture of him jumping off the tower thing in his profile looks insane.
Also, to the kid who said wakeskate. I've done it a ton, along with wakesurfing and old fasioned wakeboarding/waterskiing. You gotta mix things up though.

lol barefoot skiings a sport on its own. i think it was fairly big early 90's. I once saw my neighbour jump in the air, land on his stumache, bounce off his stumache, do a flip, and land on his feet. he was apperently a professional at one point. he also climbed everest. interesting guy. kinda looked like fabio.

I got up my first time, a lot of us did. Not first day, but first try. I have video somewhere actually. Most people went about 35 mph. It's fun but you will be super sore for a long time no matter how good of shape you think you're in.

small twigs and shit won't do much. your feet get pretty fucking tough. it's the big shit you gotta worry about. I shattered my heel once when I hit a water logged 2x4 floating in the water. I'm usually pretty good at spotting that stuff, but this was in a show and the guy outside of me was spraying the shit out of me. I never even saw it coming. Felt like someone lit off a stick of dynamite in my foot.
@ the OP - I can teach ya dude if you're ever in my neck of the woods. it's actually pretty easy to learn if you've got a boom (a boom is a bar that sticks off of the side of the boat...it may be in that vid....didn't watch it, but i think that vid is a clip from Mike Seipel's (sp?) Hot Rockin' Feet 2 in the 90's...I'm sure I've got that on VHS.) At any rate, the bar basically supports a lot of your weight so you don't get completely fucking owned when you're learning. I've taught a lot of my friends to foot this way before they even learned how to water ski.
The hard part is actually doing it long line. You will get rag dolled over and over again. And I will laugh my ass off every time. Don't take it personal...we've all been there....it's just that funny.

sounds like a dude I know named Bloomer...guy skied pro for awhile and then went on to be a Hollywood stunt man.
it's still a fairly big sport. It's pretty much dominated these days by Keith St. Onge. Guy is fucking SICK. Check this vid...anyone who has actually done it can appreciate how fucking hard the tricks in this video are. Even thinking of throwing some of these tricks makes me ache.

barefoot skiing is intense, i tried once going at least 4 times slower and ate shit so hard, do they eat shit to stop?

Looks fun, but I bet it's a little hard to learn. And ther is NO doubt in my mind that you will fall a TON

i did my first longline tumble turn yesterday so fuckin stoked! next trick is gonna be one footer i think i got it

congrats on the tumble - always remember to keep the handle at your waist and you'll be golden!

one foots are easy - just make sure you have the speed and SLOWLY lift that foot out of the water. i find they are easier to do when you're cutting out hard to a side, ie if cutting on skiers left of wake, raise your left foot. if out on skiers right of wake, raise right foot. once you can one foot for a long time, then you can start doing toe holds, toe ups, etc. good times! let me know how it turns out dude.

i was hoping you'd comment with some advice. yeah on the tumbles i try and just put the rope to my right waist , i'm not quite sure what i do after that (instincts kick in i guess) but i just finished taking a few foot runs and stomped a couple more tumble turns. STOKED. toe holds would be fucking awesome though. I wouldn't mind having a boom to practice some things on, but i'm figuring it out.

hopefully these damn boats get off the lake and it gets glassy again so i can go for another run. any other advice you have on footin would be dope, im pretty new to it.

Is a toe up going back and forth between left and right one foots?
