Just wondering if any of my fellow NSers have seen this film which is made up of amazing videography which has no dialogue just music to enhance the scenes...In my opinion it is extremely well made..it was made in 1992... the film is more of an experience because it immerses the viewers in different cultures around the world while relating it to the more industrialized countries.. if u havnt already checked it out..do so it is incredible, the shots that were used are exceptional...
 
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem employs the same techniques, except it's about musical aliens, and you get to listen to Daft Punk the whole time.

watch that one too.
 
I went to film school and I took a 4000 level class where everyone and the prof basically ripped on Baraka and Koyaanisqatsi (Frike's other similar film).

Basically we all agreed that editing and soundtrack was used in a way that forces certain emotions on the viewer. It was overdramatized and unnatural feeling.

Sure, the cinematography is beautiful, but the film should have been silent or used the diegetic sound (meaning the sound of what you are actually seeing on the screen) instead of a non-diegetic soundtrack.
 
then to end the argument, Frike says "so who in this classroom has a film thats gotten any recognition?"
 
Baraka is a pretty cool film. First one I saw that was put together like that and really made me start to appreciate other films like it. There was another one similar to it put out by the same director. I don't remember the name but try google if your interested.
