Banned for Life- worst day ever...

Ok let me start of with a little background. I ski at a small hill on the east coast (1700' vertical). we basically have no park and the mountain is almost stagnant. The management will go pretty much all out for tourists but they treat the locals (especially anyone under 30) as 2nd rate skiers. We do however have aewsome snow for being this far east, making for great backcountry, and since we don't have any jumps, or tree skiing it drives us into the bc to look for the type of skiing we enjoy. So anyway Yesterday we hiked about 15min to do a nice pow run ( 3'of fluff) through the trees on the backside of the hill. We went with a group of 7. when we got to the top, 5 of the guys in the group started to drop in. I still had to defog my goggles so me and my buddy jon dropped in less then a min later. we were looking for their tracks and they must have been looking for us. we ended up going wayyyy to the left of where the trail came out and way left of the hill. this was at about 4pm by the way, 30min before closing. so anyway to make a long story short we knew where we were going but we also knew it was a damn long walk to get there. so 2.5 hours of hike/skiing later we made it to the bottom where we were greated by a few patrolers who brought us inside after asking us if we we're alright. The manager had a few things to say to us. Basically he flipped out (didn't show any concern, didn't even offer us a drink even though we were dehydrated) about us going into the bc, told us the rcmp and search and rescue as well as our parents had been notified, and there we're people snowshoeing through the woods looking for us. he took our passes on the spot. Fine. It was definatly a stupid move heading into the bc that late even though we knew it was really only a 10 min run out. And I appriciate the help of all the patrolers, nice to know that they are there and dedicated if youre really in trouble. So now we are banned from the hill untill further notice. we all have a meeting with the management in 2 weeks to decide what they are going to do with us. It's basically gauranteed that we will be gone for the season, possible for life. Anyway, I don't want to turn this meeting into us pleeding for our passes back. I would rather go in and make some strong points and leave with a bit of pride instead of my pass. It's sad that it took something like this to be able to talk to the management but I don't want it to be a wasted opportunity. I want to bring up some points on why we go in the bc in the first place. Lack of terrain (park, tree skiing, challanging runs, etc). and how they can help. so on that note does any one have any ideas of issues to bring up? I don't want to blame them for us having to resort to hiking in the bc but I want them to understand why we do it.

Thats in newfoundland right? thats a pretty sick mountian for the east....

Anyways, ya dude I dono what to say, is it strictly prohibited to go out of bounds? was there roping? cus jsut because they had ppl looking for you doesnt meen its your fault you were far away.. jsut explain to them that you got lost. And if there ases and you cant ski make sure you spread the word on what happneed... trust me they donmt want bad publicity. it sounds like alot of customers purchase tickets just to acces the backcountry. Explain that to them. They shouldnt be liable for backcountry anyways, its jsut another feature the mountasin has to offer.Anyways, good luck... just make sure you dont be silent.

don't get pissed. stay composed and make sure you articulate your points so that the management knows why you did it. you'll probably lose your passes, but you'll keep your pride and may even be taken seriously.

Licks dirty balls.

Anyways, yeah, don't worry, they'll give you the passes back, guarantee, and if they don't just bomb the hill, because they are mean people!

Explain them why u did that BC experience, how much u love skiing, also that u don't smoke pot, that u go to church, that ur family loves u, and again that u love skiing and for sure they'll give you ur passes back. And if not...sucks balls

-----------------------------------------------------------What would happen if the powder was warm?if u actually needed summer in order for snow to fall?Chest deep hot pow?And in Winter, sand would come down the skies, and we would be pissed off, because our cars wouldn't work...

yeah we got back to the area 2 hours after closing, and they had a lot of people notified ready to start looking. I realize it was ultra stupid but everyone makes mistakes right. The area was NOT roped off, however I'm not gonna use that as an excuse because we all knew it was out of bounds. however does anyone know if the mountain is liable if you arn't on their property. think about it, if your skiing durring the day and you go to your condo across from the mountain and ski there then they arn't liable. I guess its just different where the group of 5 told the patrolers that we were missing. but anyway im pretty sure the pass is gone for the season. hopefully the management will listen to some logic and won't totally shut us out

just dont be an ass and admit how stupid you are for goin bc that late and theyll probly give em back

Fuck You

technically teh mountain is not liable for you if you are not on their property (though they might still own the BC adjacent to their property) but no self respecting hill management or patrol will just leave you out there if you have been reported missing by your friends and were at one point on their hill. once you leave the hill, it becomes the responsibility of the area's search and rescue (that the hill and patrol might be involved in) to find you...which also comes with huges fee's to you. I think they had every right to pull your passes for being irresponsible and it good to realize that. but yeah if you plan on just using this meeting as a way to bring up other issues then make sure you make that clear at the begining and just be professional about it. I am sure there are lots of them who would have vetured off trail for a chance at 3 feet of fresh...but would be a bit more carefull about it. my 2cents

Last time I checked, ducking ropes was legal in Canada. It's done everyday on most ski hills out west, and no one gives a fuck. Granted, you went back there and got lost, without a beacon, probe, map, shovel, extra food, water, and WAY TOO LATE IN THE DAY, but that's what's called a mistake. More like a series of mistakes, but I digress.

The point is, you didn't really do anything wrong, other than the stuff mentionned above. You went out of bounds and things went bad. That happens. It's not a reason to be banned from a ski hill for any kind of time. My buddy got lost at Red Mtn, had a full search party looking for him without him even knowing it, made his way back the lodge, checked in, cancelled the search party, and no one mentionned banning him from anything.

whenever we go into the bc and get caught i just tell patrollers that we don't ski much and we got lost, took a wrong trail, or didnt know we were supposed to be there, theyre stupid enough to buy it. I almost lost my pas this season simply for tucking on a public trail.

4 pm is late for lots of reasons, but think of this: If you're out there just to build a booter or ski a few lines, you'll be out there for a while. It gets dark earlier in the winter. If you go out at 4 pm, it's still pretty light, but if shit goes bad you'll be stuck in the dark, with rapidly dropping temps, unprepared. Finding your way out is much harder at night, and sleeping out there unprepared is a death sentence.

all the hills in colorado close at 4 except for keystone cuz they have night skiing. but that sucks dude, my suggestion is that you should sound professional, and not like a kid, and DONT be rude or sarcastic or anything like that.

i say if they dont give you your passes back sew there asses. THis is bullshit, they can't take your passes they are yours, you rightfully paid for those.

TRY EVERYTHING EVEN IF IT MEANS KICKING YOUR OWN ASS

^ Yes, and it says right on them, 'this is the property of the ski area operator, and may be revoked at any time for misconduct while at the ski area'.

That sucks dude! 1) I like how, according to your story, they tried to guilt trip you about sending people on a s&r. 2)Sounds like a quasi case of a power trip. But all in all banned for life is bullshit. I can understand for the season but life for this little mishap? Why would they want to ban a potential money maker for em? If you don't give a flying fuck about your passes, go in there being a pretencious dick and pour sugar down the gas tanks of their cars or groomers. If you do care, act professional and then commence the sugar idea.

'I bought an antfarm once. Them fellers didn't grow shit'.

^ yeah I guess they were just a little heated at the time. Once they have a chance to discuss it among themselves and with us i'm sure they will come to a more realistic punishment. 2 weeks is what im hoping for but in all reality it will definatly be the rest of the season. unfortunate too we were starting to have one of the best years i can remember

I will make some suggestions.

You seem to have a very solid handle on the fact that you made very poor choices in the situation.

You also seem to have a solid handle on what precipitated your Backcountry adventure.

I think that you going into the meeting with an agenda other than 'pleading for your passes back' is probably the wisest and most professional thing you can do. The trick is tact. If you enter the meeting with all your points typed out and copied to provide to each of the people in the meeting is a good start, that way the Resort management has something concrete to refer to. Focus on the positive of the hill, don't say 'this place sucks because we don't have such and such'

Make constructive points, such as the instatement of backcountry passes, and offer to take an avalanche survival course. Make suggestions as to the specific type of terrain you would like to see developed IN THE RESORT.

I think you already know what to do.

Defy Skeez(tm) Team Rider and all around Jackass

Yeah. Hope they don't pull one of those 'oh we'll suspend it for 2 weeks' then you get a notice in the mail saying 'oh we suspended you for six months' moves on you. That was my ordeal when I got my license suspended back in the day. I still drove regardless. Fuck if I ride a cow around Wisconsin.

'I bought an antfarm once. Them fellers didn't grow shit'.

i doubt they would ban u for life cause think about it in like 20 yrs u would be band for something u did as a kid. you would be a completely differnt person

that sucks man, and we could all learn to wait for the ppl who know wut theyre doing instead of blasting off

and dont just act professional, but look professional too. shower befor you go, remember to shave, cut your nails, wear a nice suit with a tie and nice shoes. have a good firm handshake and shake their hands when you get there. make a good impression on them early and then make your points constructivly. you dont want to treat them like they are your parents, so keep calm relaxed and if you start to get a little angery then breath in deeply and have some water. just be chill and everything will go well. and eye contact is improtant too(espically when shaking their hand) treat it like a job interview.

-Thom Savery

please pardon the cacography

I cant really decide if you did deserve that because you did go out of bounds and it does say that it is prohibited. If you only got caught I could see you getting ony your lift ticket clipped for the day but when you get the RCMP, and patrols out looking for you I think that is enough hassel to ban you from the hill, I dont think they should have to do that simply because they are meant to patrol in the boundries.

2 points.

1. You paid for a pass. Implicit legal contract, cash for skiing / terrain access. If when you bought the pass, theres a set of rules saying no backcountry access, or there signs up saying out of bounds- and you break this; depending on the wording youve voluntairly given up the contract. If its in anyway vague- or there isnt stipulated punishment- ie you'll have you pass taken (it doesent say explicitly it will)

Then, in that case, they owe you the money for the seasons pass. You paid them for it- if theres no rule saying pass removal will result, and they take it from you and kick you off the premise, they are frauding you out of the money you paid for the pass.

My suggestion would be, apologize, but point out theres no signs, and that you paid for the pass. If they decide to give you shit, make a publicity stunt out of it, try to drag local newspapers into the scene, etc- hell even take them to small claims court.

I agree rules are rules, but if theres no signs clearly defining whats terrain and whats not (you cant argue that its groomed it must be terrain.. ) and the pass entitles you to be on the premises- nothing explicitly otherwise- you definatly have a case.

as with all resort problems i suggest hardcore militancy, we gotta get a band of 'freedom fighters' together that are willing to die for the movement. well raid the homes of faggot ass resort owners, kidnap there children, and spouses, and make threats on there life, until we get some better parks, and shit, what do ya say?

you have a serious problem in america there ... here in europe nobody cares if you go into the bc cause everyones expected to know what theyr doing. (europeans maybe are expected to think for themselves a litte more, i sometimes have that feeling) ive been to canada and in some resorts inverted tricks were not allowed in the park, speedings not allowed etc. ... wtf ... everyones responsible for what hes doing himself. if you get in trouble you pay for the rescue what is ok, but ive never heard of taking a pass away, after all i payed for it, im a customer. who gives them the right to take my pass? god? police? once my pass was taken by the police which was all right, but i would never give my pass to some patrol guy, he may not do that, at last not in europe !!!

sry for my bad english

So your friends got down before you and reported you missing?

A good tip for BC is have a place you all know about to meet if you get lost or lose someone, or use radios.

But that really sucks, I would just explain to them that clearly won't do this again because I mean look what you got yourself into. Offer to do some community service, shoveling steps or something.
