Ok so we went for our meeting with our hills management today. They had already decided what they were going to do we just basically had to go and hear the verdict. We went in and basically they said they had decided to give our passes back (2 weeks later). They couldn't take our passes because it wasnt written into the contract they could do so. So what they did was take 3 clips from our passes and the next time we do anything wrong we're done. They also wrote it into the rules that if anyone goes out of bounds they automatically loose their pass. They said if anyone asked why they were gonna blame it on us (pretty ignorant considering they catch people out of bounds all the time). They said it was a styupid decision and gave us the whole lecture about what we did wrong. that all fine with me. perfectly fitting. The when they asked us if we had any questions i said I realize what we did was stupid and poorly planned but I hope they know why we are driven into the backcountry. they said why and I told them it's because of the lack of variety, no park or terrain we like to do, and it gets boring just crusing down the same runs all the time , etc. the manager then said and I quote 'thats the dummest thing I've ever heard'. She went on to talk about how we have some of the best terrain in the world ( they are high on their own pride) and how shes been to europe, etc. She said it was expensive for insurance, etc. (which I totally understand) and I suggested charging extra for a private park, having a small park but maintaining it, and a few other suggestions... she laughed and said it wouldnt work, closemindedly shrugging off all my suggestions. she then said we can use the lift to ski the terrain they offer but 'if you want to have fun don't come up here. you can make jumps in your backyard'. But whatever, i guess thats the end of that, Im really to tired and frusterated to care. I got my pass back so whatever..

they also added that terrain parks were going to be gone in the next few years because of insurance...

yeah i can ski again, but the whole experience has left me burnt out on skiing and with a bitterness towards my home mountain...

You Don't Realize What You Have Untill It's Taken Away.

I feel your pain man they can be serious dicks but dont place your hate on the skis bro just use this to push yourself to new levels( Within bounds lol)

terrain parks will be gone in the next few years because of insurance my ass. people go to a mountain for their terrain park and if they disappear the whole industry will too.

if terrain parks go i go with them. that is all that i ride seeing how there is no poweder in the east

So let me get this straight... did Marble build terrain park features for the World Juniors last year and then promptly take them out afterwards? I haven't been back to the Rock in 8 years but it still sounds like nothing's changed.

For example, there used to be this old TV commercial with guys boosting the upper knoll of OMJ. Back then, if you were even caught catching air you had your pass pulled, by patrol, for the day. Beat it several times on the basis of false advertising. Same goes with a treeline to the side of the (Black Mariah) lift: there wasn't an official run there before, but they extended the Autobahn down through with a bulldozer. Sort of missed the point in the thrill of steep tree skiing.

You know, I didn't cut my teeth on Marble in prep for the IFSA tour by sticking to the rules - but Gary (former owner) let me be. It'd be a shame for it to be known as the biggest mountain in the East for wimps. The terrain is there, you just need access to all of it.

I'm writing Anne a letter.

that really sucks man

would you get in trouble for just like setting up a few rails yourself or building a kicker next to a stepdown?

Yeah it's true.. I heard the Bush administration now controls 80% of the worlds magic.

yesterday like 10 people in or crew ducked a rope and we got bitched at so they cut of a corner of my pass and he said if they catch us again the pass is gone....later we asked like 10 lift attendants if the slashed corner means anything and they said no so bacically the guy wanted to scare us and be a huge dick about it...I hate those people

WORD

In Canada there is no laws in going out-of-bounds and depending on the city you don't have to pay for search and rescue, but now in Rossland you pay $30 for insurance on search and rescue and if yout have it you pay thousands of dollars for the search. It's a fair trade I think.

ifsa_alum, your totally right. We have the terrain but we need access to it. Maybe writing anna a letter would open her mind but i dont know if it will help, thanks though. For the last 3 years weve had jr nationals sr nationals and jr worlds. I was in the sr nationals and it was the only comp level table at marble... i loved it. unfortunatly i got to hit it for 2 days before they plowed it. they also went all out to give the pipe 12 foot walls. then the day after the nationals they quit grooming it and it fell apaprt. your rite nothing has changed... and irotate360 its only a couple pages back, shouldnt be too hard to find.

man what happened to marbles park? i skiied there 2 years ago and there was a decent park, with a few tables, rails, pipe and a nice aireils jump

'The Ski Out Terrain Park is definitely the most happenin' Park around. Said to be, 'the most progressive Terrain Park' in New Brunswick. It's packed with everything from huge hits to 'new school' railslides!'

Atleast you got your pass back!

Let's face it, no one posts anything serious on NS, and even if I wanted to, it would be answered by some not-so-clever variation of the following:

'You're gay', 'you suck', 'I fucked your mom last night', 'Eat shit', 'fuck you', or my favourite, 'I'm a better skier than you'. Jib_This

Yeah marble has been quite slack. Myself, aoe and 4 others were the ones involved. The hill totally goes out of its way for tourists and national competitons that bring people. No regard for locals. The irony of this whole thing is that I gave up snowboarding after 8 years of riding on marble I felt snowboarders weren't getting fair treatment. Now in my first year of skiing this happens. Sometimes the hospitality of Newfoundanders makes me sick to my stomach. Oh a little piece of advice, if you are from anywherer west of Halifax, all you have to do is say so and Marble Mountain management will quite possibly give you a free lift pass for your duration at marble, and maybe even free lodging.

NO terrain park!! thats retarded, who the hell runs that hill. I bet who ever it is, wears a one piecesuit(and one a cool one either), has extremely long straight skis, and complains about the big craves the snowboard make it the hill.

eastcoastcanada were you here for the atlantic championships? that was the year we had the sr nationals. after that year marble went downhill. there insurance also went up 170% in the last 4 years..

You Don't Realize What You Have Untill It's Taken Away.

yeah, im glad to hear that you got your pass back, however you really shouldnt have expected any sort of reaction from them when you gave your suggestions. first of all theyw ere gonna not listen to you anways. second of all you were doing something wrong and were being punished for it.

at my hill last year, we formed a group called the jibbewuchians and built the park with no cat time, this year the ski area had some guy from snow summint come up and plan a park and the ski school guys are in charge of building and maintaining it. if all goes well, newxt year they are hiring full time park staff

^ they wont let us build. we offered many times..

^^ i expected them to react with an open mind. i was just explaining our situation. i didnt expect them to just implement a plan.. but i dint expect them to say'thats the dummest idea ive ever heard' either..

You Don't Realize What You Have Untill It's Taken Away.

The reason insurance is so high is because 80% of the people that go down in the park are pussies. If they didnt lie there for 1/2 hr when they just took a little hit on the ass or something, they wouldnt go to the hospital. If they didnt go to the hospital, the ski hill wouldnt pay. If the ski hill wouldnt pay, the insurance company wouldnt pay, and could offer lower rates.

everyone should bombard those fuckers with hate mail and tell them to get a good terrain park

No offence but i dont understand how you think they should be responsible for your entertainment. It's not like the hill is run by government tax money with the purpose of entertaining youth. Their job is to run a ski-hill however they see fit. If you do not enjoy such a ski hill, do not go to such a ski hill. But dont ever even try imply that they forced you into the backcountry unprepared, because you'll end up looking like a whiny 12 year old who didnt get his way.

If you really want them to consider building a park, approach them professionally. You'd be surpised how much attention a well prepared project proposal with actual numbers, & graphs etc. will get. If you're in high school, and there's a business teacher ask for their help. You'll want to find who they get their insurance from, get a quote or several quotes on what it would be if they had a park. Now add to those costs the cost of building, maintaining and enforcing and advertising said park. Now you've established a hard bottom line for your costs. Next you look at revenue. You'll want to find more hard numbers again. Stats from ns.com is a start, how many users are into park riding, you'll want to get national stats then some local ones, do a survey around the hill and the local towns. Basically you need to find out how many more lift tickets sales the park will bring to the mountain. Start with hard numbers, then get into some hypothetical ones, say the increased sales that would come were the park to turn out a pro rider and that pro-rider to promote it nationally. The revenue of possible comps at the park. etc. But remember hard bottom line numbers first, then the stories. If revenue is greater than cost and the profit margin is enough, they may consider it. You never know, they may have just blown off the idea just assuming that it would be too expensive. If you can PROVE to them it's not in a well organised professional fashion, you may just get your park. As well as some future references for college or work.

Dont forget to contact ski resorts, big and small, accross the country and see if they'll help you with any of their cost/revenue numbers. Also look at the growth in the past few years and try and project where the future growth will go, be conservative they'll expect you to exagerate.

778, we're actually in the process of doing that now. collecing the numbers, looking at options, etc. and i never said we blamed them for us going into the bc, we just wanted them to understand why, rather then them thinking we're just a bunch of stupid kids. oh an im not in high school, but i am doing a business major, so i guess thats taken care of..

You Don't Realize What You Have Untill It's Taken Away.

Following up on something 778 said: despite efforts to privatize, the Nfld. Government's Tourism dep't IS still responsible for the facility with the Marble Mountain Development Corporation (Anne's group) charged with day-to-day operations (as of the last 2002 press release I was able to find).

That being said, I'd be interested in knowing the official boundaries of the resort and whose jurisdiction the remainder falls. This would help determine whose regulations take precidence in backcountry access and touring.

To me, Marble's biggest faux-pas has always been their complacency towards a captive audience. i.e. there is no direct competition thus no pressing need to progress the terrain to the immediate benefit of the skiing public. Their primary focus is on pure tourism by hosting the Canada and World Junior Games, Muchmusic Snowjob, etc. It's PR spin.

But they do have that cool base facility...

Someone still has to reasonably explain why going out of bounds and having search and rescue sent after you leads to having your pass for INBOUNDS skiing pulled. The idiots who started an O/B avalanche at Whistler last week didn't have their passes pulled. All they got was a $9000 heli bill and a lecture, not to mention a shitload of embarassment on the front page of a major vancouver newspaper. I'm pretty ducking ropes isn't illegal in Canada(I hope it isn't, otherwise I should be executed), though you are responsible for your own rescue bill if necessary, right?

my dad tells me that parks r gunna leave to but hes ignorant, or we are idont know. but i highly doubt park is leaving its even i nthe olympics now, its not leaving

luckily for me all of the mountain is open at sierra and we have some seriously awesome parks, but I can totally understand going out of bounds. I can even understand them bitching about it. But my main problem with resorts are their policies for fast skiing. I think that when there is only one way to a park and it happens to be a slow zone peole who are tackled (literally) for going a little too fast should be let off the hook. But anyways, I feel for you guys, and if you bitch enough someone will listen.

Quote of the week:Yeah, thanks Jodi's mom, for the blowjob... I always give in when she busts out the Werther's Originals!

Oh and today I found out that now you can get charged by the police for going out of bounds. this is getting ridiculas

Homeschool is just about the most fucked up thing in existence. I've been homeschooled for all my life. If not for the influence of my uncle (also my boss) my church, and a few other random social activities, I would do nothing. Neither of my parents have seen the inside of a class room for about the last 20 years, and as such, have no idea how to teach ANYTHING past about freshman year. You spend approximately ALL day with your parents (especially if your Dad has a damn home office and is a lawyer like mine), and they are constantly in your hair. Now, I suppose it would be slightly different if I lived closer to the local hill, but no matter what you think or feel positive about the subject, YOU'RE WRONG!

^ holy out of place batman.

it kinda sounds like mad river with that no park thing but mad river has some sick terrain and they are cool about going in the woods. thats kinda the whole point of mad river. but i do get mad about the no park thing tho. i mean, they even have these jumps for the freestyle team but they wont let anyone else use them
