I need some advice for doing backflips i am woried i wont commite. Have any advice? Is their any tips or things i should know?

only advice is make sure you do the backflip. Sounds pretty basic, but so many kids just pop off the jump and expect it to do the flip for them. Choose a relatively small jump, and pop just like you were gonna do a backflip on the ground. Use your arms, bring your legs around, and you're all good. Once you get used to it then you can do no arms laid out.

backflips are soo 1990's

Now kangaroo flips are in!

Seriously, if you are asking for tips on a back flip, you should not attempt one.

I learnt them on a jump up a bank... kinda like a step-up with no gap if you know what I mean. That way there's heaps of pop but not a lot of horizontal speed if you fail.
Most important thing I was taught was to pop it from your thighs and hips. If you just throw your head back you'll go upside down and stop. Throw your hips forward and up and follow through with your waist, then chest, then shoulders. It should be a fluid motion from your thighs up. That way, combined with a good vertical jump, you're basically upside down almost before you get off the ground.
Oh, and a real good tip... don't throw it too early. On my first one I missed the lip with my head by about 2" and I've seen people hit their head on the lip too.

find a big enough jump so that you dont have to tuck. much much easier. and dont forget to pop, you dont want to just huck yourself and not make it to the landing

i tried two backflips this year. First time, didn't commit, somehow did a 180 in mid air, still came around, still alive. second one, committed, laid it out too much, caught my tips, still alive. just do it.

maybe my tip is try a rodeo first, they're way less scary, then when you're all hopped up on adrenaline from landing a rodeo, go for the backie. that's what i did.

I was about to post the exact same thing. I learned on a hip jump at SMS (Momentum) back in 2000. Throw it with your hips, not your upper body and keep looking back.

there is no, "i'm worried i won't commit!!!!!11"

if you aren't going to commit, DO NOT try a backflip. you WILL land on your head. you HAVE to commit if you're going to try a new trick. doing a trick half assed is the easiest way to get injured.

a month or so ago, i decided it was time to learn backflips, so i hiked out to a hill behind my house and found a giant wind drift and put a lip on it. i just kept hucking myself until i got it. i landed on my head a few times, so i was really glad that the jump was pretty small and that it was into powder. remember to kick your legs up at the same time you're throwing your head back. think of it as that you're trying to spot the landing by looking back, which you are. it worked for me, but no amount of words equals the experience of actually going out and trying it. i wish you the best of luck and also post vids when you get it.
PS: Don't forget to pop. people have said it before, because it is extremely important. it was a big issue for me.

just say fuck it and huck it and commit. My first backflip I was 2 ft from the lip when I decided to throw it. I think that helped because I didn't think about it too hard

absolutely make sure you can do these on a trampoline first

when i learned them on a tramp I didnt quite get it right the first couple times, it would suck for that to happen on snow.

Yep. Visualize it in your head a hundred times and then do it and keep the rotation going no matter what.

the 4front tech talk video helped me a lot. admittedly i've only done them into an airbag but I was landing them consistently doing it.
Go into the jump with your hands out in front, knees bent. Maybe hands a little lower than in front. As you approach the lip throw your hands up and behind you and look at them the whole way. The big part for me was taking my eyes off the landing in front of you. Think about it this way..for a 360 your landing isn't in front of you...you need to look around the other side of you to find it. Its the same with a backflip. The landing is somewhere behind your head but its really easy not to look for it and to just hope the flip will come. it wont. You need to look for it. What the guys above said about your hips is absolutely correct. Hips forward and head back with stiff abs will have you throwing them perfectly and spotting your landing from half way around.
The big thing is confidence. Once you realise how quickly the flip comes around its a really easy trick. That's when you can start experimenting with getting your hips out earlier and laying it out. To begin with, keep it simple. Hands up, head back, tuck the knees up when you're half way around to pull it around. Throwing it hard with your arms isnt the best technique but it WILL get you around and give you the confidence to start slowing down the whole thing.
Watch the 4front tech talk episode too. They show you how easy it really is.
Also have a look at my photos. There's a sequence shot of me doing a backie. It's not the best technique in the world but it breaks it down into components.
