Right so i have a pair of old regular sized poles that i want to turn into back country poles. Normally i ski park, but i have gotten myself a pair of JJs and need a pair of pole that can match that type of skiing. I also have backcountry baskets for the poles, and sup sick handles but i need to know the Length of pole i should be using for Backcountry. When i ride park i ride really short poles like maybe 90cm or so, but have no clue when it comes to backcountry.

The Facts:

Im 5'10

Very experienced skier

Preffer shorter poles.

Sparknotes:

Need to cut down my poles to a suitable backcountry length. Im 5'10 how long should the poles optimally be.

Thanks NS!

Also +K to good answers. -K for hate!

what do you mean backcountry?

If you think you'll send time pushing/skinning you'll want to keep them long. It gets old pretty fast pushing with your hands low for several miles. Especially if the snow is deep.

judging by your post and how it made little sine i doubt you will be going into the backcountry, and if you do you probably wont be doing it after your first trip since you will probably burry yourself since you probably arent educated in snow conditions.

i will answer the question anyway.

the best pole for BC use will be a telescoping pole, that way you can raise and lower the height when you are skining, especially helps if you are going up a steep at a steep degree.

now for pure powder ski use, a normal sized pole will work, so make your arm a 90 degree angle at the elbow and the pole should be right there.
