To all those who said offshore drilling would lower gas prices I have a good and a bad news for you.
The good news is you're right.
The bad news is you're wrong.
You're right in the sense that the micro-economic principle of bringing a bigger offer into a market will lower prices. However, micro-economic is a set of theories based on the assumption that the market is closed in order to facilitate the teachings of many economics laws and principles. There is only one closed economy known to man : planet Earth.
In real life you have to count many more factors to predict the effect of an economic measure. In this case, you guys are extremely underestimating the ammount of oil produced by arabic nations and their share of the oil market. What I mean by that is that even if you allow offshore drilling, the quantity of oil added in the market will be minimal compared to what is already been produced. Also, the price of gas, unlike almost all other products on the planet, are set by world offer & demand and not by their national or local counterparts.
To round this up, even if you allowed offshore drilling there's a very high chance that the price at the pump wouldn't vary and if it did it would only be of a few cents.

I wouldn't generalize on that, even trains are godfuck expensive. Let's say I wanna drive to my summer house, which is 300km away. With a car averaging 4,5 l/100km, I could drive there and back for a little over 50e + divide that with 4-5 people paying for the gas. With a train, it would be 35e per trip and person, so 70e + I'd only get to Mikkeli, which is still 25km from my cabin, and I'd have to pay an additional 10e per trip for a bus to take me there = 90 euros.

Most every oil exporting country in the world has stated they need/prefer gasoline around $75/brl and that any instability (to the upside or downside) only makes their job of producing gasoline profitably more difficult.
Saudi Arabia, Russia, Venezuela......you know HUGE FRIENDS OF THE U.S.

There were multiple mergers, buy-outs, etc etc. That's where a lot of it went and it is still visible sitting in the financial sector, stagnant. Not the government.
