Bachelor vs timberline in may

so heres the story me and 2 of my friends want to go to oregon in may to ski.
which mountain has a better set up in May? (timberline or bachelor)
is choosing a tent for sleeping arrangements a good idea or is that better to do in the summer months?
where is the cheapest place to stay thats close to the mountain excluding camping?
do the mountains have any type of shuttle transportation?
is there a grocery store any where near either of the mountains?
ive never been out there and know basically nothing about it so any help or advice is very appreciated!
advise / help get +k

T-lines parking lot works for car sleep'n, or the air strip or the multiple lakes nearby(chill spots)

Google: "timothy lake", "white fish" is pretty close too , or simply Mt.Hood Oregon camping spots.

bachelor, hands down.anyone who has done both, which i have for years, will say the same thing, "bachelor!"its like comparing east coast skiing to west coast skiing. timberline is flat, some nice ob, minimal terrain inbounds that you can lap. and night camping, omg, talk about some shitty wet weather. bend, rain shadow=drier camping. bend vs. government camp lifestyle, see aforementioned comparison between east and west coast, govy is libya and bend is well bend. bachelor lift accessed terrain is like havin a skatepark at a mountain. our is much larger than timberline. the list is too long. trust me, spending your may in bachelor is the correct decision.
if you don't believe me, why would snowboarder superpark leave mammoth mountain to come to bachelor this year?

and hoodratz skier, i was in baker two weeks ago, drank barley browns, meh, our dozen or so micro breweries compare easily to BBs.

Cant argue that bachy is better skiing. But personally I love govy, its awesome, and bend is the yuppie center of the earth, those people like the smell of their own shit.

i give up, if you think govy is better then bend, so be it. this yuppie thing is crazy. we have the highest unemployment rate out of all major cities in oregon, but compared to govy, anything is yuppie.

real quick, let me describe your day at timberline and your day at bachelor:timberline, wake up in wet soggy location with either rain or fog as your guide, drive up to the parking lot, ride park, ride some more park and then leave. you drive back down to govy and back to the wet, foggy, soggy weather with people who barely have two pennies to scratch together. there are two bars, one to two restaurants, and a very overpriced grocery store.
bachelor, wake up, it will probably be sunny, if not, parly cloudy, drive up to the mountain, park, ride park, or wait, there is new snow.....ride summit to park all day, 3000 vertical, or no pow, ride park, one of three, and each time you can stop at your car to kick it with NON YUPPIES, who are having a party time in the parking lot, then ride some more park and pow. you leave, you go to bend.....over 100 places to eat under or around 10$, people who are not yuppies and plenty of bars or house parties to have a good time. places to stay, tons.
i still can't believe there is a thread debating timberline or bachelor during the SPRING. there is absolutely no comparison.

pete stop talking so highly of bend and bachy. yes i love both, there not that great. get the fuck outta oregon if you want anything better. only thing thats good here is summa skiing. I still love bachy and hood.

the name is jim. im glad you went out there.. you get to ski the real dry powder of Oregon.?? if not , you missed out.!
no matter how much better bach is then hood.. it will never overshadow hood. more people from Portland drive up there. my self i cannot complain. Portland is awesome. the beach is near, hood is near. its a good balance. i lived in Colorado,, i lived in Govy. hell i lived in aumsville for a fucking month. and the last time i checked govy is on the mtn. and bend is about 20 min away. and yes. govy does suck. i will agree with you on that one. thats why my cabin is in Rhody. chill times. when i can and i have the skrill i hit up the bach. but park is not the main draw for me. if some person has limited funds it would be better for them to go to hood where it is cheaper. don't be mad that people don't want to shred the bach. be happy your lift lines are short. down in the flatch.

and as always.. bend beer .. not as good as Portland beer!

I'm still laughing at the part about Hood being always foggy and shitty weather in May, but Bachelor is either sunny or partly cloudy. Oregon weather us unpredictable, even in May, end of story.

I hate them both! I'm going to nebraska for all of May, corn fed chicks, tornadoes and wide open spaces. I can close my eyes and be there right now... so nice!

I love both of these hills, but in may timberline is very much geared specifically to park or racers (based on experience as I race trained around may for the past 3 years) I haven't really skiied bachelor around may but, it seems like there'd be less of a park or racing scene goin on, so probably better recreationally. So its probably based on what kind of skiing your looking to do, if you want a nice ass park or hard pack race courses timberlines your mountain.

To be honest I think Bachelor. I went to timb last year mid feb and the park set up was sketchy and poorly kept. The only time bach doesn't have their parks set up is after a major dump. I don't know much about camping and places to stay cause i still live with my parents, but i'm still a tightwad cause gears expensive. bend's a city 30 mins away, so you could find a hotel for some cheep prices and there's plenty of camping right outside the city limits. They offer a shuttle from bend a minute away from rays and safeway, its a little expensive $7 1 way, $10 round trip, $65 14 pass, and if your go enough 175 for season buss pass.

Also during may you have no idea what the weather and temps will be like, bach has a 3,400 timp 3,700. Bachelor's terrain wraps all the way around while timb is just a little patch of the hill. Also Bach has one of the easiest lift set ups i've been to. Its simple and easy to learn, and you can also make it all the way around the mountain on 2 lifts. And i've been to Schwietzer in Idaho, Timberline, and Mammoth. The Timberline lifts are sort of a pain to get around on to get to the lodge and over to the park and what not. But ya bachelors prices are a little higher, but in my opinion i feel they offer a little more.

I hope this helps, i tried to give you as many facts as i could without bias. Oh and Timb has night skiing too something bachelor needs, but it was horrible no coverage of any parks and the lighting set up was very sketchy and spotty, so I wouldn't make it something to base your trip off of.

have a good trip man!

I wouldn't disagree with a lot of your comments, but I do have to say that you must have been at Timberline on an off day if you think the Parks are "skechy and poorly kept." I think for the most part we keep our stuff looking and ridiing really well. I would hate for people to not ride T-lines parks becuase they heard they were not kept up well and skechy... is that really true? I'd like to know. Anyone else feel that way? Be honest

Thats how it was for me, they might not always be that way, but i didn't really see a reason for them not to be kept up. It was a blue bird day in february, there hadn't been any storms recently, and it was a weekend. It seemed like a prime time to have all the parks up but they only had the one to the right of the chair if you're sitting on the chair. And i felt like the lips were really sloppy, and all the rails and features were crooked with small lips on them. This might not be what its like a majority of the time but thats how it was for me. But by all means if you ride there you know it alot better than me, so ya sorry if i got it mixed up.

dudes, may is like the best month of skiing @ bachelor half the time. Last year we closed, and then set a record high snowfall. if you want the total mix of pow, park, good people and good vibes, come to bend. portland is a city and mt hood is a cities mountain. it rains as much as it snows and is officially the yuppie capital of the west.

We will have about this till mid may....what will bach have? I havent been there in a while so wouldnt know....

was that this year? as in feb 2011 or feb 2010? Cause I know my boys be on point this year....I personally cant say anything about previous years

Actually Portland is more of the hipster capital and Bend is the yuppie capital.

Both have their strengths, and obviously people here are pretty biased about the place they call home.

pretty much sums it up.

but then again.. not every one from bend is a matte sipping yuppie and not every one from portland is an stinky hipster. id say hipsters are the small part of portland but get the most exposure. hipsters are so mainstream.

Eh i mean its pretty similar, and idk maybe pete can clear it up but i dont think they will put the slopestyle setup back in since the comps are over?

tough call.... I can add that actually camping (outside of a car) is tough in Govy that time of the year because of the wet weather at lower elevations but it can be done and there are plenty of chill locations. If you need any good spots feel free to pm me.

Timberline will probably be switching their park from below to above treeline sometime in May so be ready for some low visibility days when that happens, but from my experience I'd say that the park riding will be much better at Tline that time of year....... mostly due to better maintenance and salting (this could have changed). I've had a lot of speed issues in years past at bachelor due to lack of salt and I think they normally start closing at 1 or 2 in the afternoon at some point in April, while Tline will be open until four everyday with prime park riding until the lifts close.

On the other hand, the freeriding is obviously much better at bachy because the pitch of the hill is actually steeper than the access road, but that also depends partially on which lifts they run midweek.

Both mountains have good BC jump spots, you just have to get there early in the morning before it gets too slow.

hope this helps, and you'll definitely have a good time at either mountain.
