Avy beacon

Probably depends on whether your newer to the avy gear or experienced. If you have the experience you may want a nicer, higher functionality beacon. I use BCA tracker3/tracker2. Both are very intuitive which is a big deal if you were ever to have to use it in a serious situation. Tracker2 is more limited and easier to use, Tracker3 has some important features like multi burial search. Whatever you land on do your homework and practice so you know how to use if you ever need to

I’m new, have a mammut it was used and the screens damp and not easy to see, I’ve only used mine to go through gates at resorts and primarily rely on my airbag as I’m solo , I’ve never had any practice or training but am getting it this season as it’s my first full year out west and I’ve spent almost everyday up at 5 with a buddy who’s showing me his spots so I’m gonna learn more than just shovel and probe

I want one that gets me found as I’ll usually be solo, but can track multiple people for when I am not, primarily want it to be crystal clear what mode it’s in etc and have a good cold weather battery , I was looking at the ortovox3 but was looking for opinions and personal likes/dislikes and reasons behind them.

Whatever you do, don’t for the love of god get a pieps

In terms of bells and whistles, multi burial isn't terribly useful in practice, especially if you're getting used to beacons. If shit goes down you'll just go to the nearest/first signal anyway.

Learning from friends is a great way to get started and super fun but I'd highly recommend taking an avy course. After a few seasons learning going out with friends, it was still worth it IMO.

+1 on the BCA tracker 3 (or higher). Simple is good.

I'm similar to you in terms of experience but have taken a class and gone out a few times, ran a few practice beacon drill scenarios, and I'm familiar with my gear. I have the Mammut Barryvox S and like it a lot. Simple to use and it has the right amount of features that aren't also confusing to use. I would say I'd trust in in a real-life burial scenario. Its loud, clear, and helps the user take a breath and focus on the task at hand. The harness could be a bit better but it's about the size of other things on the market so if you have a harness you like, it'll fit. Whatever you buy, there is no replacement for skills practice so once you get it, get familiarized with it one day and maybe do your own kind of drills with an extra old beacon you use, just make sure the technology is up to par. I had an issue with my old tracker 2 and its compatibility with something newer like the Barryvox which would scare the shit out of me out there. Just a thought :)

I have the bca tracker s. Its by no means fancy or high end but i needed a new beacon that wouldn’t break the bank and is reliable. Dont buy something used bc it will just be an issue down the road

I'm incredibly confused over your intentions with this Lil bit snuck in there

Yeah isn't that like rule #1 of the backcountry? Or are you just wanting them to be able to find your body? If you're buried, unless you have created an amazing air pocket or have an avalung, you're gonna be dead in a few minutes.

After some thinking… I understand how both of you could lose my intention based of my comment

I was picturing myself solo in a gated area of a resort , say big couloir, or other beacon requiring gated area, where I hope, they (patroller) would find me in time, and I’m basically always solo at resorts, I only get a few trips with friends a year, now that I’m not out east to drive them west…I prob won’t see them and have 1 buddy to tour bc with who will be my teacher/instructor for avy.

In the bc if I’m solo I won’t be skiing anything steep enough, and will try not to put myself in the path of anything that can give, but will still have my pack

I do not have an avalung but I certainly will, I will not pass on anything that gives me more of a chance at survival.

As far as body being found, I’m not trying to be morbid, but I’d rather not be, if it’s my time and I’m not gonna make it there’s no better place to be buried than a beautiful mountain
