Went to one of his concerts about a month ago. Fucking epic. I thought more people knew about him already though... maybe that's just me though. Since i'm a Dance junky.
 
honestly that's me since every one of his songs i hear has a terrible association to some douchebag bro talking about his favorite band named avicii and how he's gonna go see him in new york on new years WOOOOOOO AND GET SO FUCKING HAMMERED SONN FUCKING STOKED TO SEE SOME NEW DUBSTEPS. I LOVE THE SONGS THAT HAVE WORDS IN THEM!!!!!

Just came in here to say Big_Spence is right. EDM is finally taking over the U.S. and millions of kids will remember Avicii as the artist who introduced them to the genre. It's about fucking time people got into electronic music and my hope is that the "mainstream" artists will turn kids to the many other great djs/producers out there.
 
some will...which will hopefully be good. (or it could be horrible) but for the most part, many kids will stay with the mainstream
 
yessss I was looking for this mix! I need to see him live sometime in my life...along with Kaskade, Calvin Harris, and Rusko.
 
I've heard Kaskade is epic. Would really like to go to see Ryan live.

I think I might have Ephixia, Xilent, or Arty as the next must see artists in concert.
 
kaskade is super sick as is rusko. at Identity tour this summer i definitely had the most fun during rusko and avicii's set. so stoked to see avicii on new years
 
wanna know why? because there is comparison between rusko and beautiful house music.

you slightly redeemed yourself by mentioning Arty, but Xilent and Ephixia is other UKF dub garbage. whoever said calvin harris has some taste as well.
 
I wasn't saying that, I was saying Big_Spence is correct in his comparison of Avicii and skrillex.

The only thing that I hate about EDM becoming more popular is that kids are coming to clubs to "rage" and get fucked up cause they think it's all like brostep. I can't stand the kids who come to a club playing house and just stand there or try and womp around or w/e it is people do to dubstep. It's called DANCE music for a reason
 
I don't mind some dubstep. I love Arty though. Some awesome stuff. Especially the song Kate. Really mainstream but I got into Trance and Dance (I know they're quite different) because of Tiesto. And I still listen to Tiesto. Overwerk is good as well.

Sadly I must say that I like J-Pop and K-Pop as well. Which makes me really not cool :(
 
this, it's one thing if you enjoy rolling at a show and are a hugely dedicated fan, but there are sooooo many people at every show that A) can't name a single song B) only care about drugs C) only want to rage as hard as they can and grind on slutty barely legal girls.

Avicii is good, there is no doubting that, but there are MUCH better melodic house DJ's that don't get enough exposure. Stupid preppy girls have ruined avicii and a lot of other EDM for me, as someone else said it is incredibly annoying having someone "show you a new song", and it turns out to be one of the most well known edm songs around.

i think melodic house is warping the genre honestly, yes it's super uplifting and puts everyone in a great mood, but what ever happened to house music having some more depth. I hate hearing a song and being able to say "oh have some pop singer do vocals and that would be on mtv". Deep house will always be better then any melodic track.

oh and Tim Bergling doesn't have shit on more trance DJ's then I can even name, just thought I would chime that in :)
 
I love how everyone's worried about EDM getting overplayed and 'too popular' once they get of age to appreciate it/actually go to shows.

I've been into electronic music for over a decade now, from when I first discovered live 105's (that's san francisco's alternative music station) "Subsonic" EDM show they played every Saturday night/Sunday Morning from like 10pm-5am...

People have been crying "IT'S BECOMING TOO MAINSTREAM" since it even gained notoriety... Don't worry too much, folks... even with the way the internet has streamlined people to learning about EDM, it's not going to crack the charts en masse for years to come... not to mention, even if it does, it will just improve its own underground scene...
 
you are actually incorrect. give electro 2 years and it will either evolve into something completely mainstream or die ferociously. Look at Guetta. He headlined EDC a couple years ago, and is now doing work with Usher, and a bunch of other hollywood ass acts. It's mainstream as fuck already. I work in the music industry, where it is my job to predict and know these things so I have authority in telling you that you are completely incorrect. "Core" electro fans like you claim to be will have to move to something completely different to tickle their fancy of "undergroundness" because shits about to and already has sold out hard.
 
Guetta's been doing that for a while though. He's a bit of an outlier in this case.

Not to mention, electronic music producers have been working with mainstream acts for years. That's absolutely NOTHING new.

Daft Punk, Moby, Paul Van Dyk, Royksopp, The Prodigy... I can go on seemingly forever with groups and artists who have worked on mainstream projects...

I don't give a shit how much of an 'authority' you have on this by working in the music industry... To predict the future you need to know your past, and you seem to have either forgotten, or never learned the history here, and how it correlates to the future growth of electronic music - the most unpredictable genre in music.

Stop acting like you know shit just because you work in the music industry. You say you deal with acts that are up and coming...as in pre-mainstream artists...as in you probably dont know whats going on in the underground scene.

I've been in the music industry for a long time. Probably a lot longer than you...and let me tell you from an experienced (/arrogance) perspective that you're completely retarded if you honestly believe that a genre becomes obsolete if it doesn't gain mainstream popularity. Those artists true to their style of music will always keep a genre going strong behind the scenes, and in most cases these guys rarely get the recognition they deserve. This applies especially to electronic music.

If you want me to prove to you just how full of shit you really are, name a genre that you think has sold out or will sell out in the near future.
 
Avicii is coming to University of New Hampshire this weekend and its gunnna be absolutely amazing. Im so pumped, Gunna be gettin sauced for sure.
 
what i have learned in this thread



1. musical tastes are NOT subjective

2. because of #1-I listen to shitty music

3. I should listen to only what big_spence and alex_g think is good, because they actually have good taste

4. but # 3 will cause that music to be over played and main stream, so i will never be able to listen to good music

5. you can only go to a show if you know every song/ at least know the artist

6. when you started listen to edm is directly correlated to how cool you are

7. #6 means i am not cool

8. where you work is relevant to everything

9. and just to throw it in there- skrillex isn't real dubstep

am i forgetting anything?
