anyone have a sick story about them Ive been in one here in NH at Tuckermans Ravine it was a class 2 i skied into the snow and it cracked i went for a ride and was alright but 2 guys got buried and we had to dig them out

~Fuck you I'm straighter than a pair of Olin Mark IV's.

this is a true story...this one time back in like 96 we got massive snow and i was standing on my deck and like 3 feet of snow slid off of my roof right onto me....it hurt pretty bad too, i think i pulled a muscle in my neck...but anyway i kinda got stuck in that

ive had 2 avalanches break on me. One between two trees which was a 20 foot fracture of a foot which partially buried me, that one was really scary cuz i was a very inexperinced skier. Another was a facture the same size but 3 feet of very wet snow, but the slope flatend out 20 feet down so it didnt gain any speed.

i was skiin this bowl outin bc... we were skiin along the trees, snow was prime. we though it would be alright to venture off a little more way from the trees... snow was great, then BAM!!! this shit load of snow just hit from behind and took me out and the other 3 out... hurt innitially. all this snow was everywhere, breathing was hard... then my body jerked and i stopped burried to my waist, head up... everybody else was like 1 foot or so under, everybody was fine, but shit is was a rush... that bitch took us for about a 300 foot ride, it wasnt fun

I got hit this last spring by a class 2 slide as well, and was carried about 30M. I would rank it as top five biggest scares I have ever had, and not one of those good kind of scares, more like when your girlfriend tells you she's pregnent kind of scares.

i was cutting a traverse and one broke beneath me, it slid for a long way and started looking like churning whitewater, nobody was caught in it but shist it was scary

I was gonna ask the same thing...I'm not certified, will be soon, but I have been around stuff long enough and have never heard slides categorized as classes. Don't try and sound smart.

It's just like tornado's classification, based on the size of it. I'm not too sure though about sizing them and classification of where they fit. But I think the biggest in terms of Avy's is like 6. correct me if i'm wrong, its been a while since i was certed.

the only classifications i've heard are related to the composition of the snow like slab or point release, etc... could someone find a site or something about it?

its a canadian system, goes somthing like this

class 1 = weakass shit pretty much harmless

class 2 = could bury and kill a person

class 3 = could break trees, distroy some buildings

class 4 = could distroy bigger buildings, bigger trees ext...

class 5 = big ass mofo commin down the mountain, if your around when this shit goes down, your history.

theres a scale of impact pressures, and mass that defines these classifications.

According to that scale I have seen my father getting swept away by a 2 to 3 size slide when I was about 8 years old or so. As soon as the slide started he disappeared but came out on top some 500m down the slope.

Then 12 years later I myself was in a smallish 2 rated slide. It's very scary when all of a sudden it's no longer the slough that's moving around you but the very shit you are skiing on starts moving. Lot's of pressure and I immediately had difficulty seeing anything due to the clouds of snow. I tried to point the skis slightly sideways to travers my way out but all that happened was that I got pushed over. It was like in a pretty big wave, I submerged and got spit out again but never found my poles.

Be Strong, Be Wrong.

Here is the CAA rating system for Avalanche's

1- Relatively harmless to people

2-could bury, injure, or kill a person

3-could bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a wood framed house, or break a few trees

4-could destroy a railway car, large truck, several buildings, or a forest area up to 4 hectares(10 acres

5-Largest snow avalanche known. Could destroy a village or a forest of 40 hectares(100 acres)

That is word for word out of CAA's Level 1 course book. If you dispute that take it up the the CAA. For the person claiming to have level two certification it is in you course binder on page 1-7 (Canadian Avalanche Size Classification)

Note: I think the rating of avalanches may be different in the U.S? If some one knows about this let me know.
