Avalanche Fatality at Alpental Today

There was a slide involving a few guys at Alpental today at around 12:30 PM. One guy was partially buried, one completely. One guy dug himself out, one looked for the one completely buried, and one went for ski patrol. I guess it was below the International Cliffs. They got him out in 40 minutes (long time for what seems to be a small slide), but he wasnt breathing. The started CPR and he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Very very sad and scary. A sad start for the PNW. RIP.

wow, thats aweful.

underneath international, huh? God, thats so aweful.

Dont worry, its a controlled slide.

I heard it was only about a fot deep that broke away but the slide was nearly 100 yards long so the volume was there. Its always sad to hear about this stuff but at east they were prepared with all the right gear. RIP man

the article said they had beacons on them all. also it said the area was closed because of low snow coverage.

They all had beacons on them, so i dont know why it would have taken them 40 minutes to dig him out. Either they were inexpirenced with the beacons or he was buried really deep. It was also no Alpental BC, it was in the area, which at this point isnt open. Either way it is really sad.

the one who died...was named erik lewis. he was my boss, fellow skier and friend. He is missed by all of my friends who worked for him at Mt Si Nursery. He was the type of skier that didn't care about looks and style. He just loved the sport and everything about it. He is the type of skier i want to be when im older. He wasnt being stupid he knows his limits. His death is being grieved by all that knew him.

Yeah Teefa, one of the articles I read said that no avy work had been done at Alpental this year because it hadn't opened, so maybe it was just waiting to go....

NBC, sorry to hear about your friend. RIP.
