Avalanche at the Canyons

CNN is reporting that there was an avalanche today at the Canyons and at least one skier was caught in it. Does anyone from SLC/PC no any more details?

ppl are dumbshits i t was ob under an obvous slide are

'skis are like girls , the more you have the better'

It was not an 'obvious slide area.' It was just to the left of ninety-nine-90, in Dutch's Draw. A very accessible and heavily skied area.

I was in class when it happened, my phone started ringing off the hook with people making sure I wasn't up there!

300 yds. wide, 16 feet deep!!!

yea, if its where you're talking about, thats readily accessed areas. Yes its OB, but tons of people go there. Im surprised, they usually bomb 9990 real well if its bad.

I ski Killington

College passes are awesome

I've been hearing the deepest part of the crown was indeed 15', Ice. 1-4 people thought buried at the moment. I heard someone was dug out, but the life flight didn't leave with him/her, so sounds like there is at a least one fatality. However many people were buried are almost certainly dead, beacon search turned up nothing, very sad.

Check out channel 2 news. That's what they're saying, and from the shots they're showing, I believe it. I've heard you can see it from the road!

yea, they usually bomb the living hell outta 9990 when it gets bad, but dutches draw is such a dangerous place, im not suprised at all

look at the angle of the slope?

think of the weatrher and snow conditions from the last month and a half

ithat slope is always way windloaded a good reason why it id always skiied heavily wind bring a lot of fresh from the backside

plus anywhere ob in utah is horrible for avalanche danger right no

'skis are like girls , the more you have the better'

fucking perfect example of how just because a slope is explosive controlled to protect a road or buildings DOES NOT mean that it is safe to ski...

I had like 15 friends and family calling today making sure it wasnt me. i was up there the other day but no way was i going in the BC, the conditions were sooo sketch.

The conditions actually arent that sketch. Most of the stuff is really stable, its just if you hit one of the weak pockets and start a slide it will be humongous and surviving is close to impossible. I was up all over today and most things seemed really stable. dont worry about going out

Dspin, I hope that you get buried in one some day with that kind of attitude. Im sorry but the avy danger has been through the roof for the past week. Just because it has stopped snowing for the past two days doesnt mean that it erases the 16 days of snow before it. I feel really bad for the families of the skiers that died, but it just proves again you really do have to be careful and know what you are getting into. You cant expect that theyre going to bomb dutch's. They have warned everyone about the avalanche danger there for the past two weeks.

With what kind of attitude? I probably know alot more than you shit face. Most things are really well bonded right now, christ the avy report mentioned taht yesterday that alot of travelers were saying everything seems real bonded. THe report has in fact said numerous times that most stuff is not going to slide if you pay attention to what you are skiing but if you do create a slide it will be enormous. Exactly like what happened here, i mean those people were fucknig morons for being out on that slope. You can stick to other smaller flatter slopes and the skiing is really good thouh.

this mornings report:

Large and deadly avalanches continued to release early Thursday morning. Activity included at least four large natural avalanches, two avalanches from helicopter skiing test explosives (photo), and a hand full of slides from resort control work. All of these had a 3-5’ fracture line depths with the largest in West Monitor (photo) up to 9 feet deep in one section of the crown face. One of these natural avlanches released in skier compacted terrain at one of the local ski areas. These all released due to added weight from wind transported snow over the last 48 hours. The avalanche activity is widespread enough to make most avalanche professionals nervous.

Congragulations, thats why you dont go skiing on runs like dutches draw now you fucking moron. THat doesnt mean that there isnt a lot of good safe riding out there.

And wow you can copy one days avalanche report...how about you read it daily all season long and get out in the BC yourself and develop your own opinion rather than just copying what somebody else wrote the one day someone dies.

It was written before the slide. And for your information, I wasnt saying that there wasnt any good skiing out there. I know that some of the more gentle slopes are amazing. I have been up there. I was talking about Dutch's Draw and only that. I thought that you were talking about 'all over' as in all slopes. Settle down man.

all over would mean all over. Jackass, what else could 'all over' possibly mean. People at the canyons are jackasses and dotn know anything about the BC and shouldnt be there.

dspin, are u 2 make generalizations about people who ski the canyons, ive seen plenty of sick people hitting up the canyons. And the people who went out that day were dumb. Theres no reason to be going into duchess when theres taht mcuh fresh snow, not to mention its sitting on top of all that old corny snow from the dry spell between dec 17 and post xmas. Plus they had no avalanche gear, beacons turned up no signals, they just werent smart about it when they were out there, and there was no reason to be out there in the first place. It was extremely unstable and the rescue crews were only able 2 sit out there the way they were because the slide was so god damn big it eliminated any chance of a future slide. So dont say its safe to go out because its not unless u are really experienced, and u no not only how to avoid avalanches which these people and obviously u clearly dont.

like i said dumbasses should have never been out there it is not a good place to be

as dspin said there are a shitload of safe places to be almost any low angle slope will be ok

but something that steep with that much snow on top of previous shitty snow

plus todays warm temps creating even more weight

going in there is just asking for a slide

'skis are like girls , the more you have the better'

dspin. I'm playing a drinking game right now about the number of times you say 'fucking' and 'moron' in the same posted sentence.

Well we are all hammered now do to your lack of respect for others. Why you ask. Because in this time of a horrible event where someone/many people have lost their lives you decide to act like Randy Moss.

How about stepping back and helping everyone on this board learn from this, instead of calling them fucking morons. You know. Be calm, answer questions in a respectful manner since you are claiming to be 'Professor Avalance. Master Teacher of all snow'.

People died today. Loss of life. You have a choice here. You can continue to trash talk everyone, or help people learn. Because you never know. You might be in that avi some day. The person trying to find your sorry ass might be that kid you called a 'Fucking Moron'.

Signature.

dspin is just insecure, hes always out to prove himself to people. Hes arguing with someone whose name is utah powder ski, so i imagine they have at least some knowledge of the canyons area and snow reports, and hes trying 2 make himself seem as some sort of avalanche jedi who is the all knowing god of avalanche danger. Y cant u just carry on a normal conversation with people. I wish the golden wheelchair were here

ANYONE who thinks the backcountry is safe right now is a 100% moron. Are you kidding me??? All that light snow we got after the dry spell, and then rain, followed by wet heavy snow? You cannot ask for a worst set-up for conditions.

The backcountry is reasonably safe now if you know what youre doing. Which none of you do, I mean youre park rats you dont know shit about skiing lines in the BC. Park rats. Fuckin morons

how can you just assume that we are all just park rats? Oh. I forgot. You know everyone of us personally here and exactly how we ride. Sorry.

Jflo ummm you live in New Jersey, probably the worst possible state to live in. Its so fucking dirty and polluted and filled with lower class italians. Meanwhile I LIVE in utah and have been out in the mountains skiing this terrain the past 2 weeks everyday.....but sure you know more about the avalanche conditions in utah than me. Right.

and there isnt 'that much fresh snow' all the inbounds terrain has been tracked out for the past 5 days. If you werent such a fucknig moron living in new jersey you would know that. Also these slides mostly arent a result of the dry spell before christmas....wrong again jackass. Want to try again?

Jflo - Way to continue the stereotype that all people from New jersey are morons. I mean honestly waht does the end of this sentence you wrote even mean??

'So dont say its safe to go out because its not unless u are really experienced, and u no not only how to avoid avalanches which these people and obviously u clearly dont.'

you should all bow down to suck my cock.

The 'Almighty' Dspin has spoken. And just to clear things up, where you're from has nothing to do with your abilities or your intelligence. That ignorant mentality dates back to slavery.

Oh yeah, Dspin, you wouldn't last five minutes in Jersey, Utard.

yeah they were talkin with the guy last night on cnn and he was sayin how he was burried for like 20 min but then he was dug out. i guess he sat and watched the avalanch comming and he didnt think it would make it all the way down too him but it did.

XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx

i have nothing to say

XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx

easy magnum. Not everyone from Utah is as retarded as dspin.

well dspin yes, i do live in new jersey, and thank you for another well placed stereotypical comment, u really add to this site. But anyway, i was out in salt lake from december 16-january 4. And thanx for the lil message, just because i live in jersey doesnt mean i only ski in jersey, and im not gonna claim i have as much bc experience as u cuz i probably dont, there are like 5 different types of snow layered on top of eachother, and the fracture was 12-15 feet deep in a few spots, not all around. Those spots are called drifts, they happen wen wind and snow mixes, but im sure u no all about them. I dont no how accurate it is but cnn just said that average fracture depth was around 5-6 feet which is still a considerable avalanche, and i dont care how much u ski bc in utah, it doesnt make u any safer, and it is not safe out there right now

hahaha I love how you are telling me these avalanches that are breaking 12 feet deep or more were caused by a dry spell before christmas, even though we haevnt gotten that much snow since christmas....so how the fuck does that work? Taht would tell me that something earlier in the season is causing them, perhaps surface hoar from November jackass? Youre wrong and dont know shit about skiing in utah, i spend over 40 days a year in the backcountry and another 60 in bounds skiing. So please tell me how the fuck you are more knowledgeable than me jackas?

You live in dirty jersey and dont know shit. meanwhile I live in utah and have been in the backcountry the past 5 out of 7 days. The other two spent skiing at alta. You know more about backcountry and avalanche conditions in utah than me howwwwwww????????

Ski New Jersey

All u have proven is that u can live in the best skiing location in the world, and still manage to be an egotistical retard who uses his numbers to back up his stupidity. I dont care where u live and how much u ski, any retard knows the backcountry is not too safe right now, i dont care if u are dspin, lord of skiing, knower of all avalanches, if u go out there, its not safe

Ski New Jersey

Oh well you must be in the mafia then huh? Since it is your name and all, after all we are all legally bound by our online names. Great point.

do you guys even realize or care that people died, your all like a bunch of little old ladies bitchin about stupid stuff.

I feel sorry for the people that decided it was a great idea to ski one of the most dangerous areas in the wasatch without a beacon...Im really sorry they arent in the gene pool to contribute to it anymore....seriously

i think every one on this site has done something foolish and lucked out that nothing happened, i think you made your point (and your own opinion) quite clear in the first 2 minutes of this post.
