Avalanche @ A-Basin this morning

There was an inbounds avalanche at A-Basin a few hours ago and one person was killed. Kinda scary that it was inbounds, and that they haven't gotten snow in a while.

The run was closed at the time so it was more or less BC, that really sucks still. I still wear my beacon on deep pow days at Alta/Bird even if I plan on skiing inbounds, shit happens and batteries are cheap

that is some scary shit, when they haven't gotten snow in weeks and its been all spring conditions (i think i dunno i haven't been up there)...

here's what i got from the colorado avalanche website. read this stuff it's pretty important

Since Wednesday we have had 2 avalanche incidents reported to the Center. The first was on Wed the 18th on the N chute of Buffalo Mtn in the Gore Range of Summit County. One snowboader was caught and injured in a wet slab.

Today (Friday the 20th) at about 10:30 am a male skier was killed in a wet slab avalanche in the 1st Ally just west of Palivicini at Abasin. His boot was visible at the surface which quickened the rescue. However he was pronounced dead at 12:30 by local authorities. This slide was estimated at 800 vertical ft on a north aspect. It was about 200-250 ft wide and the fracture was about 1.5 to 2 ft deep. It started near treeline.

We are entering a wet avalanche cycle. A cooler N'ly flow has been the situation up until Wednesday. A much warmer airmass has begun to set-up over CO with warm southwesterly flow. This will likely keep the snowpack from freezing the next 36 to 48 hours at the least. We are seeing wet slab activity around the northern mountains at this time. Most of the observed slides have been on N aspects, running 1-3 ft deep, some to ground. Vertical falls are noted at from 200 to 1,000 vertical at this time. Fractures are propagating into the hundreds of feet.

Given that overnight temps are not expected to freeze, the snowpack should be treated as though avalanches will be likely, both triggered and natural.

Timing will not help much due to the warm (hot) temps expected through the weekend. Even if you are on the high peaks, anything below 14,000 ft should be suspect to slide activity

1st alley isnt a part of abasin its out of bounds. that sucks big time though hopefully it wasnt someone i knew.

ARAPAHOE BASIN — Life at The Beach continued Friday afternoon, even as news circulated around the A-Basin parking lot that an avalanche on terrain serviced by the Pallavicini chairlift had claimed the life of one skier.

Skiers and boarders clad in bikinis, shorts and tank-tops rode the Exhibition and Molly Hogan lifts, while Grateful Dead music wafted from the second-level cafeteria.

Russell Ferris, a 26-year Summit County resident, said he was not at all deterred from continuing to ski after hearing the news of the avalanche.

“I think it’s a freak accident, Ferris said.

Many visitors did not know about the incident, but others who were at the ski area earlier in the day knew something was wrong when rescue workers began to show up.

“I saw the helicopter and thought somebody got hurt skiing the regular course, said Pueblo resident Steve Parke, who was skiing off the Exhibition lift all morning. “Once the helicopter comes and they start roping things off, you know something’s up.

Park County residents David and Karen Rothrock and their three children were approached by ski area personnel shortly after the slide and asked if everyone in their party was present.

They answered yes, then saw a person being brought down the mountain on a sled. Ski patrollers performed CPR as they took the man into the patrol room at the base, they said.

The man was later identified as David Conway, 53, of Boulder.

Keith Jensen from Englewood sipped a draft beer in the bar and recounted the snow conditions on the Pali face, which he skied 15 minutes before the area near it slid.

“I noticed before the slide, things were collapsing; you’d break through between moguls, Jensen said.

He saw the avalanche on his next lift ride, where snow seemed to have been pushed from the trees. “I was looking down at 10 feet of debris, he said.

For Toni Linder, however, the news was more jarring. She learned about the avalanche while watching CNN at Keystone and drove to A-Basin, where her 17-year-old son was snowboarding with friends.

“I ran over because cell phones don’t work here, she said. At about 2 p.m., she hadn’t yet found him. “I think he’s OK; I’m just gonna make sure.

There were no reports of missing skiers or snowboarders late Friday.

The ski area, in a statement, extended thoughts and prayers to the deceased’s friends and family.

he fell and then was pushed off a cliff by a small avalanche.

i was there today, it was fucking huge for an inbounds, its amazing nobody else was killed... the whole run slid, i would of guessed a lot more people should have been swept away. Yea Abasin hadnt recieved snow in awhile and this was a bump run, and it just all went. ITs crazy though, when you go up the lift, look around at all the other mountains, there are avys everywhere, they closed all the steep stuff on A Basin because there were 3 small avys on the East Wall too... sketch shit

It was all open when the slide happened. I was there that day, luckily I wasn't on that side of the hill when it happened. Kinda scary.

Late spring is terrible for that.

When you're riding Whistler, on any chair that you can see 7th heaven, you can see where tons of slides have happened in the last month.
