AUSTRIAS SNOW CONDITIONS!

pretty sure the skilift picture is from a french resort....

none the less, conditions in the alps are mad right now ! :)

About time Europe had a good season - it's been hit or miss for so many seasons past now....

At least they get a complete monster season this year!

I remember '98 when it was the same - and there were a lot of people killed and villages taken out by huge avalanches. Chamonix got absolutely fucked by avalanches.... i was there and that much snow goes beyond a "Sick Pow Day" and just becomes down right fucking scary when you're in a village with 10,000 ft of slopes laden with that much snow hanging up above you.....

fuck, i know about this shit firsthand! story time

i was in an austrian hut in tirol last week with a bunch of friends, and we we supposed to leave sunday afternoon. turns out, we got a so much snow, we got completely snowed in. we pretty much had nothing to do, we couldnt even go outside because the avy danger was too high. we ended up not leaving sunday, but wednesday afternoon. shit got boring, but the little time i did get out skiing was wild. all in all in the week i was there we got about 7 feet of snow, and that wasnt even too high up.

on a sidenote, avvy danger is crazy high, here's some footage from a scary slide a few days ago in Ischgl austria....

after they unstrap from the little drop onto the road you can hear the one guy screaming RUN! after which you can here them running while getting engulfed in the snowdust avalanche (triedschnee, dunno the name in english) the lens gets totally blocked. a few secons later they've found shelter and after the snowdust has passed you can see the debris sliding down right were they were seconds before ...

If you look closely you can see trees sticking out ....

If only this came earlier, went to Mayrhofen in December and the snow was piss poor; dumped the next week-always happens!!!

and there is 1m forecasted for stanton for thursday/friday/saturday...my home resort in engadin is getting another 70cm aswell :D woohoo

That was such a fucking depressing thread! Why am I stuck here with a broken leg when I turned down going back to STA for a season! aaah!!!

Think it'll be like this next year? I've always wanted to come out to Austria since I read that "how to ski cheap" article in Freeze magazine. I have been thinking about it instead of Japan, and I think it's the better option for ne

you should know better than to ask a silly question like that. weather isn't predictable, never will be.

pretty sure only Roger Pass is freakish enough to get regular pow conditions year after year (after year after year).

gotta love the inland temperate rainforest.

St. Anton almost never lacks snow. There will be decent pow conditions every year. The tricky part is you never know when. Last season, it started dumping in early December and hasn't really snowed a lot for the rest of the season. I unpacked my mountainbike in early Feb and toured the Alps. This year, early December, I biked up to 3000m. Snow came after Christmas, meter after meter, resulting in one of the craziest pow conditions I have ever witnessed. I don't think it will melt until May.
