Audio or No Audio

Which is better in an edit, keeping the audio or deleting it and just having a song? Ive seen some with audio and some without. Just wondering what you guys think

Clean audio is awesome, but unless you have a decent mic and/or not moving you're gonna get weak audio. It all depends, I like using as much natural audio as possible.

literally nothing I love more than a clean crisp scrub sound when someone takes off of the lip, but most likely you have to record that separately from the shot.

same, even if its just a little ambience and wind noises, its much better than silence. Though I would rather have a silent edit (with music) than one with a shitty internal mic that ruins it

yeah, the video you posted had variable sound, nothing to write home about.

Not to toot my own horn, but I was stoked on the audio in these two videos of mine. Nothing like clarkes, his is a higher level of post work, most of mine is all just from the shots.

Somebody post the halfpipe edit of (I think Kenworthy) or maybe Brown. It was the best example of audio i have ever heard in an edit and has not been rivaled to this day. my mind was blown the first time i saw it.

I think Solar System is better but Clarke is really good and using natural audio regardless

Top video sounds so good with the Gramatik too, surprised I haven't seen it. Great work!

I think it was probably done in post. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they just took wind sounds from somehwere else and and then overlayed sounds of skiing (ie sliding a rail, popping off the jump).

I have no idea if this would work but has anyone tried attaching a mic to a skier, but instead of attaching it to their chest put it lower down, closer to their skis.

he had his intern use an external mic set up. I read what it was somewhere else but cant find it. I remember this edit being kinda disliked due to its style but I think its was a cool idea that worked well, even though some of the shots got repetitive with him being in the sun basically. this is copied but the full freeskier thing is below

"For this edit we had one idea: make some awesome ski porn. This was my first time shooting skiing with the new Sony FS100 and boy[/i] did it shine. I'm really happy with how the footage came out. Aside from visuals, I also had Jake Traux—my trusty intern—on location, who was there to capture all the sound, which played a major part in how this piece came together.

Yeah the shots did get pretty repetitive on the rails, it was always from the bottom right looking up at him with the sun behind him.

Absolutely done in post, too much sound happening all at once. The panning gives it away too.Based on the other stuff in this thread I'd guess Clarke did all the video, the intern recorded a bunch of extra noise, they did all the necessary pre-production in logic or something, and then threw the video and audio together after.

This kind of stuff is awesome, I love good audio work in videos.

How many people can do this kind of stuff around here? I'd love to learn.

I feel like it would be better if you could get close to the skier when the/she hits the rail and hold a mic to pick up the skis hitting the rail and snow. Then you can do that for jumps and then film normally and edit in the sounds synced with the skier.
