Audio + HD DSLR + Skiing

Wow this is a brilliant thread. Never thought about shooting the audio separately and combining it in post later. I have a friend that does audio for hollywood films/tv shows I'll have to see if he has any extra gear.

due to budget, ive decided to go with the rode videomic (or pro) and get the ntg-2 in a couple months. i figure the rode is pretty popular and i wont lose much on re-sale value. do you guys recommend a wind muff for this guy? i am going to use the audio from this on tripod shots mostly so there is no wind disturbance compared to on the glidecam.

thoughts?

wow.. learned alot from this thread.. but one question, if all i have money for now is a shotgun mic, will this improve my sound over the built in mic of the 60d?

yes. its marginal but definitely an improvement. that is what i am doing now until i can drop 400+ on a good setup with a boom pole and take spare laps, although 80% of my edits will be music overlay and some occasional realtime sound.

completly off topic but how do they get the sky to look black in that video??

anyone have any personal experience with the videomic pro? any benefits if i do have the money and can get that one? or should i say fuck it and just get the tascam dr-40 recorder and a mic+boompole (im going back on what i posted before i know)

The more you crush your blacks, the darker you sky gets. Personally, I like a full blue sky but with dslrs it can be really hard to avoid.

i have $1,790 right now...but getting the glidecam HD2000 and a cheap rig/glidetrack and the rest is going for a mic and hopefully the tamron 17-50

but then im doing 4-5projects within the next 5 weeks which will get me another $3,500.00 so idk what i should do.

i dont know if its my self. but dont you think that he crushed the blacks in that edit wayy to much? it seemed like he was losing a lot of detail because of it to.

A lot of people do, i used to do it too unknowingly. Really bright snow with really dark shadows is appealing to people who don't care about color, it just looks "epic". Ive moved on from that but to a lot of people, crushing blacks is still something they do a lot.

hmm okay. to someone not looking at the elements of how the video is made, I could see where its "epic", but to me it just looked bad. especially with the dark vignette

Hath and Matt Berryhill were chilling all day, Clarke gave them his audio gear and they were both recording audio throughout the entire shoot. At least one of which was recorded with an h4n and external mic.

Question: Does anyone have the NTG-2 mounted to their camera and connected to an H4n? Just wondering what you use to physically attach it to the camera since I don't think it comes with any way to mount it. And how would the H4n attach to the rails? I am somewhat noobish in this area. I'm talking about something like this:

really getting down to the wire guys.

break starts in 7 days and i;m looking to order no later than Tuesday. This is just audio that will cover me over the next 6-8 weeks until (if i decide to, since ill have plennnty more funds avail) i purchase something higher end like an NTG-2/3.

as of right this moment:

Rode Videomic Pro + Deadcat

and im doing 4-5 projects over winter break where it is 80% sit-down interview style and I'm wondering what the cheapest yet good lav setup is. I understand i'll need a recorder as well and I guess if i'm getting an NTG-2/3 later on or AT LEAST upgrading my videomic in the future that perhaps i should get a tascam dr-40 or zoom h1?

As for the Videomic, I am just worried about on hill sound while sking - the wind. I'll be using the 11-16 for a lot of shots close to rails/jumps etc, and i want to have it clarified that whether i'm stationary or not that I will be picking up the clinks and hits/takeoffs while im cruisin even if there is wind.

I'll be trying out the AGC Hack for the 7D soon...(unless anyone knows a better way or has done it themselves, any links or direction would be greatly appreciated)

thanks for the help and input!! ++

You can disable the AGC with a 19khz tone and a DSLR Y splitter cable. Look it up on google. Sometimes its a pain in the ass, but its better then nothing.

I actually just got this mic a week or so ago, and I must say for the price it's pretty nice. I can probably do a test if you want.

because i am shooting for an insurance agency, like i said i do a lot of sit down interviews where i continue to do voice overlay through separate footage of what they are talking about - for ads. i asssume the H1 can fit in their pocket and ill hide the lav somewhere on the shirt and then i just sync it up in post with the footage? i may try the 19khz tone option like Gasper mentioned...speaking of which, how do you mount yours on your cam? velcro?

yeah look on my profile for the picture. I just used velcro squares. although i recently just mounted it to the plastic battery compartment of the rode mic just because it is out of the way. when I had it on the side it kinda got annoying while controlling the camera , but you could deal with it easily.
