Auction to hunt a Rhino

Dumb-Chelsea-Handler.gif

As was stated upthread, this is being blamed on the massive negative publicity and subsequent death threats. No animal is worth putting one's family at risk. Think about if this auction had raised as much positive publicity as it did negative publicity and with a Save the Rhinos message similar to a Save the Pandas message. This rhino could have generated millions and millions of dollars. At least all the publicity got people thinking about rhinos and their conservation. That can only be a good thing.

It's great to raise publicity.

But saying it's due to bad PR is bullshit. It's a lame excuse and if that was every any concern, a reserve price should have been set on the rhino.

And if the PR was that unreal, someone with money to blow would've bought the rhino and let it live.

Anyways, that being said, i'm happy the conservation is getting this money. I hope the winner of the auction gets curb stomped once the payment has gone through. Win-win situation.

See this is something that has a positive side as money could be spent to make sure Rhinos stay alive. Someone illegally poaching a Rhino that could be poached for 350k could end up getting killed by their tribesmen for taking money out of their pocket. Its probably the only thing that would stop those stupid fucks.

HOWEVER...WHAT WOULD BE BEST IS A PERMIT TO HUNT THE FUCKING SCUMBAGS WHO HUNT RHINOS. BEING ABLE TO GO TO AFRICA AND KILL A POACHER WOULD BE AMAZING!

Id pay big money if I could go to Japan and shoot the people who hunt Dolphins.

that's fucked. Are you a vegetarian? I really doubt you would be stupid enough to say what you just said if you were.

If you are not a vegetarian, then you are a hypocritical piece of shit.

I only object to the hunting of predators and other animals similar to us on the food chain. It fucks up ecosystems. And is just wrong in the case of endangered species. Don't give a shit if someone shoots a deer, even if its recreational even though I would never do it. I do care if someone kills a bear.

I want people to die if they are hunting predators I am rooting for the animal. If they are hunting canadian geese I don't want them to get shot by their hunting buddy though.

If you can't distinguish between hunting a pest and hunting a predator you are a fucking moron and are clearly dumber than a dolphin, and less deserving of life in my opinion than a dolphin, and while I do not wish death on you I absolutely wish it on scumbag japanese who kill them.

No I am not a vegetarian or against hunting. The animals I eat are bred into life for the purpose of feeding humans with the possible exception of fish. Sorry that I am a hypocritical peice of shit to you for having a normal view when it comes to eating meat yet wanting to preserve endangered species or respecting animals smarter than humans like dolphins and whales.

Again you have proven why I believe that a dolphins life is more valuable than yours with your shitty post.

wow. 11 years NS and this is the first time I can't bring myself to make fun of someone for being an idiot.

this guy is literally so dumb that I just can't bring myself to do it. I just feel bad for him.

can someone else please step in?

You just got owned bro. You should be able to come up with a better reply than that.

According to your posts slapping a mosquito is the same thing as killing a panda bear.

i'm not going to lower myself to this level of debate. maybe some people really are less intelligent than dolphins.

not ENDANGERED. Yes the fish stocks are being depleted and might reach endangered levels but they are not there right now. check out the Endangered Species Act bro

This is necessary.

They're specifically targeting an older, male rhino that is sterile and hostile towards other males. Killing this rhino would benefit the species by allowing other younger males to breed and not be in danger because the aggressive and territorial male is being hunted for that specific purpose.

And there is also the fact that a lot of money is being put towards the preservation of the species because of thsii auction.

sorry buddy, but the US government is not a good authority on what is endangered and what isn't. The atlantic bluefin are not on your list because it has economic importance. They can say it's because of a lack of data, which is somewhat true, but the data we DO have suggests that they are endangered.

The IUCN red list is obviously much better. It is based on peer reviewed data, is more independent from political pressures and is global in scope. In fact the ESA is heavily influenced by the IUCN red list.

Just because the US government has decided that bluefin tuna are not endangered, does not mean they are not. If Zimbabwe decided that their rhinos were not endangered, most people would still consider them to be.

Atlantic bluefin are in a lot of shit. If you want a comparison, the white rhino is ICUN "near threatened", the second lowest level. The bluefin are "endangered".

I somewhat agree.

But the thing about it is it takes a total shit and dump in the face of pro conservationist people to see a rich white person dropping serious coin to hunt an endangered species.

And think how much money we would make if we started letting rich people bid for the right to shoot pedophiles or murderers?

This post is for all the sheep, who don't research a damn thing and quickly hop on the emotional bandwagon.

1. Kenya is auctioning this tag to #1 raise money to protect the other Rhinos.

2. If any of the animal rights groups really gave a shit about the rhinos they would have paid the $350,000 so that the rhino would not be killed and the other rhinos would benefit. They didn't. Therefore this rich guy purchased the tag, helps out the Kenyan wildlife and gets to hunt a problem rhino that is wreaking havoc in a local village and will be killed regardless (zero income for Kenya). Get it?

3. The Black Rhino will not go extinct from this hunt.

4. Yes the guy may be a douche for wanting to hunt this animal.

5. Black Rhino will be donated to a museum.

Smile, make yourself useful, and do some research..... probably start with researching why you voted for Obama. End rant

Im historically right wing and a republican because Im an entrepreneur who hates public sector scumbag employees but whats so bad about Obama?

Bush stared a needless war, Obama tried to enact universal healthcare that is flawed but is still a start.

Economy tanked under bush and is booming under Obama.

Where is the beef?

Again I am not some pathetic fuck who got a public sector job through connections and sucks up taxpayer money while getting a fat pension and short hours and long vacations Im hardly a bleeding heart liberal.

He and so many presidents preceding him.

I'm sort of mystified when people try to argue that point.

"HE WANTS TO DETAIN PEOPLE AND CITIZENS! HE WANTS TO SPY ON US! HE GOES BEHIND THE BACK OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!" You know, it wasn't Obama that passed PA I and PA II.

That's been going on for a while, Obama is not the grand architect or anything close. Once in a while, they just get "caught."

I'm not his biggest fan, by even a very long stretch.

I mean, do you think Nixon or LBJ (for exp.) would have passed up current NSA tech if they had it available to them?

That's is a good point. Mind you most animal rights groups could not afford to do this. So it's not entirely true.

I wonder why a big one like PETA didn't jump on this? It seems like it would bring them publicity, and they thrive on that shit. Although PETA seems to be more concerned with promoting its brand and making money than actually helping animals. They probably figured they wouldn't make enough by doing it.

Good attempt but you failed horribly. This rhino is to be hunted in Namibia. In fact, the very first line in the link from the OP reads The Dallas Safari Club auctioned off a black rhino hunting permit in Namibia. Kenya outlawed all hunting long ago. Back when Kenya was Tanganyika and sport hunting was allowed, wildlife thrived. Since then, Kenya's wildlife has been almost completely eliminated, except in its national parks. The wildlife has no value to anyone except as food. In the world we live in, which is sad, wildlife must pay its own way. Kenya is often looked to as an example of what a no-hunting policy can do. Tanzania, on the other hand, has done tremendous things with its wildlife populations and sport hunting. The book Game Changer provides a very detailed look into this, along with rock-solid arguments for why sport hunting is a necessity in African wildlife conservation. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the fate of Africa's wildlife, on either side of the hunting debate.

Fair enough. I have no doubt their stocks are depleted and honestly I don't know to what extent. noone does. I do, however, think it is unlikely they will go extinct compared to a land animal since we dont have the resources to hunt or fish their entire ecosystem even though we have been doing a pretty good job of destroying them now.

You bet we have the resources to. We have fished species to the brink of extinction before. Currently we set quotas to try and prevent this from happening, because we know we have the capacity to fish them to extinction. This is why I said "we have opened up endangered species for hunting". I guess you could say it's fishing, not hunting, but whatever you call it the fact is we are legally harvesting an endangered animal.

The problem with the quotas we have set is that they are 3.6 times the value we think is required just to sustain the current population. They are far far greater than the quota we think would be required for any sort of recovery. Most models say that we really should be harvesting no tuna at all. Other models predict they will go extinct no matter what we do.

There are too many people in the world for humans to rely on any type of wild animal. It's just not possible. Not that animal agriculture is sustainable either. The only way we can sustainably feed 7 billion people is with plants.

That's the reason why I eat (mostly) plants, and no animal products. With all the joking around I do in threads, some people think i'm totally a fraud. The truth is i'm not trolling about being vegetarian. I didn't base my decision on emotions or any of that shit. I looked at the evidence and found that it was the most environmentally responsible choice I could make. It's just that NS is immature, and whenever I brought it up I just got a lot of shit from people, so my response has been equally immature.

Really? Insects are being touted as possibly the solution to ending world hunger. "U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization released a report in May of this year explaining how eating bugs could largely help wipe out world hunger."

Your "logic" is so incredibly flawed. You are the guy who knows he is beaten, has lost on every front, and yet continues on, eternally stuck on stupid.

Do you really think you just invalidated my point by mentioning that bugs are animals?

I assumed people were smart enough to know that by "animals" I was talking about the types of animals most people eat (Mammals, Fish, Birds, etc). If what you say about the insects is true, then yes I guess my statement is not entirely true, but you should be able to recognize that is a small technicality.

Even if insects are an alternative that could sustainably feed everyone, people would still have to change their diets drastically, and move away from the "animals" I was originally referring to. Personally i'd rather eat plants than insects.

Finally I was not talking about world hunger. A system that can feed everyone is not neccesarily environmentally sustainable.

I respect your opinion.

A vegetarian person is allowed to think eating meat is wrong. No beefs with that. I take back my prior attacks since I think we see eye to eye on many things. If I had a gun and had a gun pointed at my head and was told to either shoot and kill a dolphin or shoot and kill a human I'd kill the human every time (assuming it wasn't someone I know.)

But the animals that are bred to feed humans would serve no purpose on our planet. Wild chicken or cows would just get eaten by foxes and coyotes.

So if you don't want people eating meat then you clearly do not want there to be a lot of chickens or cows living and having life on earth. You might want a couple happily frolicking in a random field but you will in effect want those species reduced by 90% and way fewer of them to have the opportunity of life.

First of all, wild chickens still exist. The animals cows are derived from went extinct long ago.

I have no problem with massively reducing the population of these animals. First of all because their populations are artificially high due to humans. Second, because the vast majority of these animals who have the "opportunity of life" have really shitty lives. I would rather see us not breeding pigs, than making them and "giving them life", only to keep them locked up for their entire lives.

so yes I want the species reduced by (at least) 90%. It would be good for the planet and help prevent other species from going extinct.

I agree with this. As long as all sides hold up their bargain, and the money actually goes to conservation. Perhaps they should collect some semen from him, so that the contribution would be increased.

This has now concluded, with a solid win for conservation efforts everywhere, and rhino conservation in particular. Bravo.

After reading this whole thread, you are once again my favorite member

It's so neat. NS actually managed to have a somewhat intelligent debate with actual facts and arguments. Except towards the end when the retards started to post where they shouldn't.

There should seriously be mods who can ban people from threads if they are just fucking with a debate

When I first read the title I can understand why it received a lot of negative publicity. The thing people have to realize this Rhino was actually more of a danger to the conservation of the species. Seeing as it was a sterile Rhino that could kill a young Rhino who is still able to reproduce this seems like a necessary evil of sorts. Best part is the money goes to help save the rest of the Black Rhinos.

also on this subject I am probably going to be making some donations to these places to help effort in conservation of Rhino's.

This seemed like an appropriate time to bump this thread, what with the whole Cecil circus going on. Take the time to read through it if you want a somewhat-inside look at the other side, and not just what the media is feeding you.
