ATTN NS Guitarists.... I need your help.

Alrighty everyone, I've decided its time to take a break from piano and learn me some guitar.

Got a lil acoustic that my dad used to play, its not broken or anything, functions just fine.

I want to know what you guys would recommend I do to learn guitar - My goals are more or less to play like some of the rock greats - David Gilmour, John Petrucci, Hendrix are all huge influences.

Consider the level of playing that Petrucci is at, that goal is ridiculously far off at this point, but hey, why not?

Coming from piano, I have a pretty solid understanding of theory, I know my modes, scales, chords, arpeggios, cadences etc, but I don't know how they work from a guitar perspective.

My goal is more or less to get to the point where I can write and play my own stuff, but have it be more than your average 4 chord progression - I want to be able to play solos, improvise, and generally just be a fairly solid, well-rounded guitar player.

At this point, I have next to no idea what I'm doing, and anything you tell me will help a ton. NS might seem like a strange place to ask about this kind of thing, but I'm asking other places too, and I know a few of you shred guitar. I guess what I really need is a bit of direction.

+K for all who help!

Thanks everyone.

hey man i dont really know if you know any about this but i hope this can help.

Get all your chords down and learn the blues and pentatonic scale all over the damn neck. It will help you tremendously. i just wished I did this when i started out.

Learn all of the open chords to start. These combined with some tabs will get you playing half the pop and rock songs you know.

Then you should learn how to play barre chords and some scales. The pentatonic scale is the easiest way to learn how to solo.

You should also learn different ways to pick all of these chords. Fingerpicking, strumming, fast picking, etc.

I Used The Ernie Ball Books and they relly worked...my dad taught me alittle bit but just use the internet...i highly suggest the ernie ball series!! I think its rad that ur gettin into guitar...great way to use a life besides skiing!!

get blues lessons, i used to play metal mostly, and having solid theory and consistency is good, but learning to feel the music made me a much more well rounded guitarist.

And when I say learn all the chords....LEARN THEM ALL. MEMORIZE THEM. And all their variations.

If you do this you will pretty much be set to learn any song by ear pretty easily. The blues and pentatonic scale will help immensely with soloing and eventually writing your own music.

Focus on getting all these down and youll be set to pretty much do anything you want on the guitar. Don't worry about speed and accuracy just yet, that just comes with a ton of time and boring repetition.

Learn all the major and minor chords first. Then do some drills, start at the low e (top string) and pull it open then first fret, second fret, third fret, and forth fret. Move down to the next string and do the same until you are at the bottom. When you are at the bottom do the opposite. Go 4th 3rd 2nd 1st and open.

Try learning the intro to walk the line (first learn tabs, they're easy) http://www.azchords.com/c/cashjohnny-tabs-717/iwalkthelineeasy-tabs-69698.html

Find progressively more difficult songs to learn.

chord progression. get that down to a science and then start working on solos. this really trains your brain to get that connection between different fingers and between both hands. its what every guitarist should start off with. then just learn the major penatonic scale and the blues scale. then work into minors and stuff when u got those down. learn to switch between scales and once you have that...you will play some amazing shit
