Attempted my first 3 backflips - fucked myself up pretty good

the one i learned on was about a 12 footer.. the first couple times, and still somewhat now, its kinda like, huck it, blackout, and then the landing comes out of nowhere.. also, make sure you throw your arms up.. that helped me pop off the lip

to be honest thats how all my tricks are. First 99% of the trick is feel then all of the sudden I see the landing and extend.

HOLY FUCK GUYS!!! So I haven't skiied in 16 days since I made this thread and hurt my knee. First day back on skis today. Same mountain. They made some bigger jumps so I spent my first two hours just hitting rails and speed checking the jumps.

I wasn't going to try anything crazy because I am hitting an air bag on Friday but I drank my usual flask of whiskey and thought fuck it, this lip is perfect.

Well ..... I just stomped the shit out of my first backflip clean! I couldn't believe it. It was so easy and effortless. I just hit the jump, made sure to pop first and then threw it. I don remember spotting my landing but I remember just hitting the snow perfectly I couldn't believe how clean it was. I just rode down the rest of the mountain with my hands in the air. No idea if chairlift said anything - they probably did but I had music on.

And on only my 8th day skiing park. I'm so happy right now. Now it only I could 360 instead of stopping at 180.

PS: whoever said back flipping is easier than 360s is right.

nice dedication dude, glad to hear you stomped! i landed my first backflip first try on my first day on skis! but i have a good background with backflips from trampolining and such. But still probs dude for sticking to it!

Wow, I was the complete opposite. I got the 360 on day 5 of skiing, but stil have yet to backflip or frontflip in my 7 seasons of skiing.

Thing is I landed a 3 like my 2nd day but I just can't figure it out. I think I'm not turning my head but I don't have any video so not sure. It's frustrating because I can 180 large jumps now no problem but can't get that extra rotation.

By the way, I just tried throwing a front and had no idea how to commit to it. I froze in mid air and ended up just straight airing it. I think they are harder than backs now.

Friday I'm gonna try fronts, misty 5's, switch backs and of corse 3's off airbag till I land it.

Never before have I heard pretty simple physics sound so unnecessarily long-winded and complicated. I'm willing to bet 90+% of the people who want to do flips don't give a damn about the exact physics involved, they just want to know how to do them and not die.

for me, backflips are cleaner than even spins........you have so much time to spot your landing. plus you dont have to worry about catching edges or getting freaked out in air....

get on a trampoline dude...... understand how to lay the flip out

so whether its a mogul booter or park jump you know the flip

spin the X axis ........... not the Y axis

^ Thanks Free. I ended up just ordering some foam knee pads meant for skiing. Gonna wear that over a neoprene brace for the time being and see how it works out.

Anyway, well I landed about 10-12 of them today. Didn't wash out on a single one. This is the only one I have video of and it looks like I just barely over rotate which causes the tails to hit first. The one thing I am wondering is how do you transition from just hucking a backflip like this off a decent kicker to being able to control it in the air on a larger jump so that you can lay it out and delay the tuck/rotation?

I know how to do it on a trampoline but seems a bit scarier to delay the rotation on snow. Fuck it up on a tramp you land on your stomach on soft mesh. Fuck it up on snow/ice you face plant/belly flop/catch nose tips.

Truthfully you prob aren't going to be able to take it to a larger jump until you have better air awareness... I would recommend learning how to an actual 360 to the point where you know exactly where you are in the air and you feel comfortable spotting your landing. Then and only then should you consider taking a flip to anything over 25+ feet.

Cause right now if you try to send a backflip on a "big" jump you are most likely going to either under or over-rotate the rotation dude to not having a strong air awareness.

Solid advice. I just watched your vids which are sick so it looks like you know what you are talking about. I think you are right about getting the 360 down as that seems to set the stage for so many other more advanced tricks.

You guys are just Jelly. This is one of the kids I coach. Threw his first backy last Sunday. He's 10. It was pretty sick!

Progress!! Yesterday was a great day on the mountain. I learned how to lay out my backflips depending on the size of the jump/knuckle. It was a little scary not spinning so quick, and I am still not really spotting my landings and instead doing the flip on intuition but I didn't over/under rotate a single flip. Was throwing them off some pretty massive jumps too.

I also said fuck it and decided to learn Lincoln Loops yesterday. First of all, if anybody is on the fence about trying them just of for it. I washed out 5 times and it is seriously the lowest consequence trick you can try in my opinion. It didn't hurt a single time falling from them. My problem was I was landing on my left ski first and then right causing balance issues. But I finally stomped a couple by the end of the day and now have a new trick in the repertoire.

I also got over my 360 fear and learned speed is your friend and just huck it hard and keep looking around. After not being able to do 3's after 15 days in the park I finally got them yesterday going big on the jumps. Such a cool feeling trick once you finally get them around.

It's weird as you get better and more comfortable you start naturally feeling okay to try new tricks. Once I get my Lincoln's locked I'm gonna try rodeos and once I consistently hit the 3 every time I'm gonna start trying corks.

Fucking shitty that the season is just about over but I have a lot to look forward to next year. Definitely need to step up my rail game and hopefully can hit a camp this summer.
