i was worried that i woudl be behind, and i was a pussy so i didn't take a year off before college. I really really regret it now. take that year off and become a legitimate ski bum. get some useless job out west or in europe, and ski. do it.

this kid knows what he is talking about. I thought I would just do it after college. But guess what? Thousands in student loans and a falling apart car won't let me do it. And, now i am old and get hurt when I bail hard. Take this man's advice. Take a year off. Ski where you want. Live off the grace and money of other people. Do it

^^^ dumbest thing you can do...DONT take that year off...push through school as fast as possible, get it over with get your degree then move to a ski town and kill it!!

I know far to many losers who took a year off and never went back to school...guess what...they are still valets and liftees or ski instructors in there 30's,,,, Push through school, take extra credits so you graduate sooner....move to a mountain town...sign up for Grad school, MAX out your student loans and take only night classes...the government will pay for you to ski with low interest loans which you can place or forbearance...but seriously you have ZERO chance of sucess of you dont finish what you started,,,,especially if you want a real ski industry job...

the fools telling you to take a year off dont know what they are talking about...and if you do the only way to do it is to work like four jobs the summer before your take off...save up about 15K and Ski phat and live large without having to work,,,,being 18 in a ski town with no job and no money sux dick...can you afford 500$ a month rent right now, plus food, plus passes and ski gear??? did not think so...plan it out first

^that is what i have heard. but its also a very decieving figure for some people on this site. A large portion of that 75% were trying to save up $ for college and did not succeed. If you are well off and your parents are paying then you probably have a 30% chance of not going to college. That is what our grad center person says. and some other ppl. If you cannot afford college out of highschool, go to your student grad center and ask what you can do.

well I guess my response was to responsible people who know they will be attending a good university and have ambition. Good call on the guy who posted a couple after me. But see, if guys have a scenario like me where they have to borrow lots of money and then are in debt when they get out, it is hard to ski on that because you have to pay a bunch back when you get out

fuck it, go to college somewhere near the mountains and take school nice and slowly. take a few credit hours (maybe a half or 3/4 load and ski in the mornings. I schedule my classes only on monday and wednsday so that i can ski the other 5 days of the week.... some say it cant be done but im doin it and pulling a good GPA at a good school (university of denver).

you can have both if you really can pull ur head out of your ass

im gonna go to school somewhere local for a year or two, then move to colorado or utah, take a year off, go to univerity of utah or colorado as an instate resident.

i duno, college does not sound too inviting. i mean, parties are rad, but everything else sounds kinda getto. and my brother went to college out east, so ive seen what its like because we used to visit him, and i think id much rather be skiing every day. but maybe ill go to portland u, or something like that

I didn't take time off, got out in 4 yrs, got a job ASAP, now I can afford to go anywhere in the world on vacation and ski anywhere I want

oh yeah- skied local all 4 yrs of college as cheap as possible with student discounts, I didn't miss a thing... just learned to bargain shop

I did, well for 6 months i was a huge ski bum skied everday that winter best time of my life, and i went back to school, though i think its pointless cuz I now know that what i want to do is ski everyday

I think its better to get done with studying, get a job, and leave on a sabbatical, but you gotta do it before you turn thirty... I'm still hesitating myself about when im gonna take my year and half off to follow the snow in the northern and southern hemispheres all over north and south america and europe.

360 ski guy...don't worry about shit like that bro...i went into the military, then got out with no college and started with people 4 years younger than me while some of my friends were getting their degrees...i still was more responsible than most of them and had more drive than they ever did...just stick with your mindset and not worry about what others think

This thread really hits home with me due to my own experiences and the man is wise beyond his years. That might not be true I don't even know how old he is but seriously if you have any desire whatsoever to do the ski bum thing do it and do it now. I too opted to try and make school work even though my heart wasn't in it and I essentially pissed away the last 4 years of my life in the process trying to figure out what the hell I want to do besides ski and I never came up with anything but a stronger desire to be a ski bum than ever. I finally said fuck it and took the plunge and moved to whistler and I've never been happier in my life. As a non religious person I strongly believe that we have but one life to live and that we should live it to the fullest. It's not that I don't condone going to school by any means, if you're really into it then more power to you but if you're just doing it because it's what you feel like doing and your heart isn't in it then I strongly recommend putting school or the serious career on hold and living life to the fullest and ripping shit up while you can.

yea man, i feel the same way in school now and have the same philosophy...but i feel liek school is the key to money, which ill prolly need later in life.

i really hate the idea of a desk job, and of torturing myself and delaying satisfaction til im 30 or something...these are the best years of my life, i need to be fucign having fun.

I agree with lax....

I went straight to college under pressure from my parents, got three wasted years into it and said "fuck it I need to live a little and get my shit together first"

I left school for three years and went back last fall...

In december I will have my business degree and will graduate with over a 3.7 GPA...after that I will only have 12 credits left to get my film degree and still plan on going back again to get a marketing degree and a masters in something.

Taking time off was the best thing I ever could have done. It gave me time to see the real world on my own, and get a feel for how much shit you have to eat in this world if you don't have an education.

Sure there are a few people who make it well without the degree but they are the exception. It comes down to looking at yourself and being real with yourself. If you're burned out after highschool take a year or two, move out (DO NOT GET INTO DEBT!) and experience the real world. The go back to school and get a degree because of the options it opens up for you in life.

I quit school at 16 because it sucked, thought about doing a year's skiing but I was pretty young. So now I'm 20 and just got a degree in computer science. I've got absolutely no plans of ever puting it to use, but it's good to know I've got a backup. Now I'm heading to Whistler next year then bumming around for as long as possible. Related note - do Whistler/Intrawest drug test if you're working for them and is employee housing THAT bad?

After high school I wasn't ready for college and probably wasn' t ready to support myself either. I joined the Navy because I felt it was the only real option. Four years later I was stationed outside of Lake Tahoe skiing 50-60 days every season. Not only that, but I met enough people in the area, worked on my degree enough, that I put myself in a position for a job in the industry. Now I'm 25. No year off, but I think it was worth it now. Looking back at my day in the recruiter's office I'd have never thought I'd be here on the verge of my internship w/ Powder.

i think it's totally individual. personally, i know if i had taken a year off i would have never gone back. that and my parents threatened to not help me out with tuition and stuff so I couldn't afford to not go. i'm taking spring classes so that i can graduate a semester early. I'll grad when i'm 21 in dec 06 with a kinesiology degree and other assorted personal training certifications. then i'll go be a ski bum.

I took five years off and havent had a single regret towards the decision.. though I think when class starts in the fall its gonna be a little rough for a bit.
