Atmosphere

I dont know how many of you fools out there listen to him, but what do you guys think about his newest album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold?

i doubt that. lately, atmosphere is as common as talib kweli. he was only truly underground back in the overcast/lucy ford days.

for all of you saying he, atmosphere is not a person.

it is two people. they are slug (rapper) and ant (d.j.)

but yes, they are very good.

i enjoyed when life paints you lemons, paint that shit gold. all of their other albums are good too though.

idk how everyone does not listen to him he has something to offer everyone, that guy that just wnats big hitting bass, someone looking for music for more than listing to, someone who wants a solid beat. He has some great shit and his new album is simply amazing. FTW

slug turned into what he hated on in his early shit- a sold out MTV bitch. When life gives you lemons, stop rhyming while you still maintain respect

You can't blame sluggo for 'selling out' this is his job, if he wants to make more money then power to him. He's getting paid to make music, beats the fuck out of my job.

I have to say, this new album is completely different than their other ones.. its good, but not in the same way lucy ford was

for one, atmosphere is NOT anywhere CLOSE to underground.

secondly, stop complaining about "oomfg, i hope he doesnt get mainstream, thatll suck!" good things get discovered. you build it and they will come. Hes already started on his way to full on stardom. its gonna happen.

I think THEY have many more than 6 albums. Their music is fucking dope, especially live. I can't believe no one has brought up God Loves Ugly, which is personally my favorite album of his. When life gives you lemons is fucking sick, I love the new style.

I saw slug with a live band in missoula a couple months ago. It induced uncontrollable shitting. Thats why i put on a diaper before hand!

"for all of you saying he, atmosphere is not a person.it is two people. they are slug (rapper) and ant (d.j.)but yes, they are very good.i enjoyed when life paints you lemons, paint that shit gold. all of their other albums are good too though."

Im suprised you didnt read the thread before saying anything. And really, who cares? Sure it may be wrong but it doesn't change the point you're trying to get across, if it really bugs you that much get some white out, cover over him and replace it with them.

for all of you that thinks he's underground, hes not..they play his song you on 93.3 in denver all the time...he is dope though..his old shit is where its at though...always coming home is a sick song

oh thanks for enlightening all of us man! every single thread about atmosphere, someone makes this claim. i couldn't give less of a fuck that you are aware that atmosphere consists of slug and ant. he's not even noteworthy anymore. in his prime (overcast) he was mediocre at best (nice production though). i cannot see the attraction to such a mediocre artist at all. anyone who makes the distinction between underground and mainstream is a tool to begin with. that shit is dead! completely. that's the type of thing i would say back in 7th grade. listen to music because you enjoy it. you think his lyrics are really insightful, poignant, intelligent? mehhh...there is so much more to listen to out there. everyone should get educated. i just hate hearing all of this shit about slug when i know that the majority of you have no clue about hip-hop as a whole. you have to get the whole picture. and after that if you still like slug the most, fine. but more likely than not, you will find out just how painfully mediocre he is. i honestly start laughing when i see everyone riding his dick so hard. same with jedi mind tricks.

did you just claim atmosphere as underground?

when i was 14 listening to atmosphere he was underground.not now.

I had to hate, i just could not resist. It's wayyy too easy with atmosphere threads.
Some of my favorites:
Nas (Illmatic era)
Pharoahe Monch (Organized Konfusion)
Have to mention Wu-Tang:-Gza is certainly the most talented in terms of lyrical abilities, very articulate, complex rhyme schemes, etc.-Raekwon holds it down with GZA (Only Built 4 Cuban Linx and Liquid Swords are two of my favorite albums)
Kool Keith in terms of ingenuity (he is one of the most innovative, perverse acts out there, never signed to a major label, invented genres of rap, see: pornocore, etc)Recommended albums: Sex Style, Masters of Illusion (Kutmasta Kurt)
Big Daddy Kane (mastered hip-hop on so many levels-flow, complexity, linguistics, rhyme scheme, he can spit flawless rhymes for literally 5 minutes straight, and is one of the most heavily sampled emcees out there-practically every act through the 90s bows down to him)
Kool G. Rap (check out the album "4,5,6") specifically the track "take em' to war", he used to rap with mf grimm and all of the verses on that song are fucking amazing. extremely violent, graphic, gritty style), so many people owe their career to his style.
Breezely Brewin' (just uploaded "Clear Blue Skies" to media and arts, definitely check that out, very accomplished flows, rhymes, etc., and no one knows this dude, so slept on)
A.G. (as in Showbiz and A.G., check out "Runaway Slave" and "Goodfellas" I just love the guy's flow and tone of voice. production from showbiz is flawless as always. The second album is a lot more gritty.)
There are so many other emcees we could get into here. These are my suggestions. People willdisagree with me for sure, and that's fine. Remember this is all subjective, so i guess there is no definitive "correct" answer, as is true of most things in life.
My preferences all lean toward the early to mid/late 90s. That was my favorite and i believe most consistent times for hip-hop. Emcees were not making music unless they were very talented. Even some of the shittiest hip-hop coming out of that period, blows away anything today based on the afforementioned categories. I am not a big fan of Vinnie Paz because I hate his delivery, he has absolutely no flow, he's just a fat, untalented fuck. The production for Jedi is dope (thanks to stoupe); I just wish he could find a better emcee to rap over his tracks. Slug was tolerable on "Overcast". He just really can't compare to any of the stuff i mentioned. Very smart guy obviously. I feel he would be better suited to writing poetry or a book. That type of work from him would interest me. I definitely went through a phase where I loved the white emcees and they certainly have talent. I guess they realy can't be compared to these classics though. Buck 65 escapes all of my criticism however.
and of course...everyone in DITC. ive been listening to the whole crew constantly as of late. diamond d, big l, show and a.g., just flawless.
here's a song i really enjoy. if you do not, that is fine. obviously it's all opinion. i just don't see how you can compare slug to THIS:

and don't pull that age shit with me. it does not matter how old you are. age does not necessarily translate into knowledge and experience. i mean in my case it clearly does, but a lot of it has to do with how quickly you can learn the new shit.

I'd like to throw out aesop rock and eyedea, there also really lyrically talented among white emcees. Aesop really throws it down though, read some of his lyrics and that stuff will blow your mind. Im currently in a white emcee phase right now(goin to see brother ali tomorrow), but like everyone said, I respect the mid/early 90's hip-hop. Im real big fans of Souls of Mischief, De La Soul and Nice and Smooth (sometimes I ryhme slow is the sickest song ever).

i am not claiming that slug is without talent. he is clearly a very talented individual. the guy is intelligent without a doubt. he's very articulate and insightful. that being said, i would much rather read his lyrics in a book. when i am in that type of mood, i reach for a book. and i am glad you realize he drops references to all the originators. that's basically what i was saying...respect where the art originated. listen to or at least be aware of where these guys got their flow from and you'll be aight. and yes i went through a white rapper phase as well. i was so into all of the anticon and def jux shit. i still really respect el-p though and think fantastic damage and company flow were nice as hell. but like for that video above, lord finesse taught big L how to rhyme and there's no way you cannot appreciate and have the utmost respect for a lyricist of that caliber. plus i just love that gritty, middle of NYC in the mid 90s feel to the production. i feel like it does not get any better than that type of stuff.

and all that shit you mentioned is sick! i went through a white emcee phase as well. check out edan "beauty and the beat" if you haven't already.

new album is ok/good i just personally prefer the older stuff, i dont give a shit if they have become more mainstream now, atmosphere was one of the first artists that got me really into hip hop, dont ever fucking question that is my favorite track

Maybe it's my complete lack of knowledge on how two quote multiple people in one quote, but I'm 99% sure you read what i said wrong. The part in quotes was said prior to whatever I actually "Quote Reply'd" and i was pointing out that someone HAD mentioned that atmosphere is two people. I then went on to say that I thought it didnt matter, it doesnt change much really.

when life gives you lemons, you paint that shit gold.... isnt nearly as good as any of there older albums. i have every one of there albums and when life gives you lemons gets listened to very rarely.

Atmosphere has such a wide variety of music and it's almost all good, both Ant and Slug are incredibly talented. Not gonna lie, favorite album from them has to go to "You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having". Pretty much every track is a banger.

nobody can say shit about atmosphere until you've been fucked all kinds of sideways by and rediclous ant beat and a nasty story from slug while trippin on mushrooms on the shores of lake superior posted up in jeans with no undies on some random ass rock in the middle of the water....

shit gets real then.....

so until then, no shit shall be talked.

what's not to get....

1.eat mushrooms

2. post up on a rock in the middle of lake surperior on a beautiful summer afternoon

3. listen to atmosphere

4. afterwards try to tell me slug and ant don't blow you away.

Makes more sense when you say it like that, but that being said, a lot of music sounds incredibly dope while tripping. Not knocking Atmosphere, and I'm sure you had a kickass time, but...
