it does work, but you have to walk a lot for it to be the most effective. it's best for mainly sedentary old people whose metabolisms have slowed down. you burn the same amount of calories whether you run or walk, however walking opposed to running burns stored fat better. and if you don't give your body carbs to burn off they burn the fat and more of it instead. they say that you can eat as much as you want, but that's not true. you still have to limit your daily input and make sure you're burning off more than you're taking in. there are other health risks though associated with the diet such as increased blood pressure and cholesterol levels. but yah. it works, so stop the hate.

oh man I would never be able to do that diet. I eat bagels, bread, pasta, and lots of carbs. But I'm not fat, so I don't think they're doing anything bad to me.

carbs = energy. Athletes need energy. If an athlete cuts carbs out of their diet, performance will go WAY down. Atkins is only good if you're fat and lazy.

 
Actually when you are on atkins, your body is using fat for energy. Not only is it burning fat from food, but also your stored fat. Although I do agree that it makes working out harder, but if you arent lazy, then that isnt an issue.

lizziebethis right. it is for peope that need to drasically cut donw on theire intake. by taking away our initial form of energy, carbs, we are forced to burn fat, then potein if teir is no fat or carbs. This det won't work if you are an active person. If you are 200-300+lbs then give it a go. but talk to your doctor first. but remember the guy that freated it died of a heart attack, and so did the McDonalds CEO on apr 19. dont know what the McDonalds guy ate, but the story practically writes itself. basically balance your diet is a healthy way to go. ciao

I hate how big of a fad it is. When I see ads for an 'Atkins Friendly Six-Dollar Burger' from Carls Jr. I always laugh thinking of who really believes that crap. Its not the bun thats giving you problems dude, it the big hunk of fat in the middle. stupid people.....

i knew a girl that went on it, but she only lasted for 2 meals, you have to REALLY love meat, and only meat, for it to work. but studies show that it's not that great for you:

1. carbs give you evergy, and when you don't eat any carbs, you supposedly become sad or whatever and it makes working out really hard.

2. when you first stop eating carbs, everyone will loose a few pounds of water weight b/c carbs store water in your body, so you have to double your fluid intake to keep from getting dehydrated because you no longer have anything to store your fluids.

3. it's just not healthy to be eating that much meat, think about it, meat is packed with cholesterol, and fat so although you may be reducing your waistline for a while, you are clogging your arteries at the same time.

4. unless you plan to stay on this diet forever and ever, you will most likely gain back all, or some of the weight you lost when you start eatting carbs again

it's not that you don't eat any carbs on the diet. you do eat some it's just a really small amount compared to a normal diet.

If you have not read the book, and done research on both views, then you are just making assumptions. If you are interested, this is a good article that was posted in the new york times. Atkins is about eating alot of veggies, as well as meat. Its only during induction that you are restricted on you veggies. Eventually you can eat fruit, healthy grains. Its sort of a long article, but worth reading.

The main consensus is that sugar is bad,and so is all of the processed crap. On atkins you eat like a hunter and gather, this is how we have been eating sine the begining of our existance. I believe that fish, veggies, nuts and berries is a healthy diet. THats just my opinion though, I could be completely wrong...

i don't know about the rest of you, but i have to try to gain any weight. i eat as much as i can and i still don't gain weight.

 
In order for me to stay thin, I have to always watch what I eat, and workout regularly. Ive had to do this most of my life (damn genetics), but at least its helped me develope a healthy lifestyle.

You may be right, but if you eat right and exercise, that's good enough for almost all of us. You don't need 'Atkins Diet' or whatever to stay thin. Just don't eat fattening shit all the time or lay off the mayo on your sandwich.

I have a friend who thinks he's gonna lose weight by eating at subway, but when he's there he loads on the mayo, sauces, and meat. He's getting fatter. What a fool.

But maybe I'm biased because I'm young and have a good metabolism.

the thing about the subway diet is that you have to eat a certain one without all the good stuff on it and walk 3 miles a day. people don't realize this and it's partly the ad campaign's fault.

you dont have to REALLY love meat, you just have to not be a vegetarian. i tried it a few years ago and had no problems sticking to the diet. IE: shrimp ceasar salads/sauteed bell peppers with thai peanut sauce and chicken.

you only have a lack of energy or motivation for a week while your body switches from carb energy into ketosis and starts burning your far for energy, then you go back up to normal.

you don't HAVE to eat that much meat, and you can always eat tuns/fish/grilled chicken/lean beef...

there's two really effective ways to lose weight. low carbs/low calories. if you start the low carb diet and lose a bunch of weight, you can make a transition after that, adding carbs back slowly and cutting back on calories until you're eating your recommended daily intake of calories and carbs to maintain your current weight. you dont have to do low carbs forever. you just cant go from no carbs to binge eating pasta.

i say go for it, as long as you keep your low-carb meals healthy with a variety of foods, rather than just heart clogging fats and high-fat steaks.
 
Atkins diet is somewhat effective, we learned about it in nutrition class not too long ago. There are much much better diets out there. With the atkins diet, you cut out carbs but it does nothing for fat or cholesterol, so you can eat a burger with out the bun. Its pointless and isn't a recommended diet, it is just a fad. The Only real effective diet is to cut calories (I think its like...if you cut out 100 calories a day from your diet you will lost a pound every 10 days) and to exercise.
 
you take your current weight and divide it by 2.2.

so lets say you're 150lbs.

150/2.2=68.18

then you multiply this by .9

68.18x.9=61.36

then you multiply this number by 24

61.36x24=1472.72

this number is your basal metabolic rate. multiply this number by 1.2

1472x1.2=1767

this is the number of calories your body burns per day with normal activity. Add another 300-500 for an hour of moderate to intense exercise. so lets say you burned 300 calories on the treadmill. 1767+300=2067.

now take that number and subtract 500.

2067-500=1567. 1567 is the amount of calories you have to eat per day on the days you burn 300 calories on a treadmill to lose a pound a week.

then obviously as you lose weight this changes because your basal metabolic rate changes
