I can prove that every religion is bull shit with 2 statements.

1) Do you remember about 2 years before you were born? That is kind of what death is like.

2) Religion is all about what happens to you when you die. No one knows what happens after you die. I know this because I don't know what happens when you die and nothing that anyone can ever say or do will ever give them greater insight.

2.5) The bible is a book written 1500 years ago about a guy who died 2000 years ago. We can't even agree on how Elvis died, or who killed Kennedy.
 
ehh i consider myself agnostic but can't really agree with you completely disproving religion/god with just those 2 1/2 weak and very broad statements...its definitely more complicated than that
 
when you die, you're done and there's no consciousness. you're just a dead decomposing body like anything else with no thought. stop being a fucking pussy about it and making up stories to make it seem exciting. you die, it's over. there's no magical gates and saints and bullshit like that.
there will never be an "intelligent discussion of religion" on NS or anywhere for that matter because the premise that religion is built on is mythical unintelligent trash anyway. This thread sucks. I hate religion even more than I already did now.

well, to be honest i cannot believe in a post-life thing. but when this good friend of mine passed away last november i told myself that regardless WHERE he is right now, i will be there too at some point.

and his mother died some years ago, and it was just a nice feeling to know that they are together now. there might be no conscienseness, but that doesnt matter in this case.

thx but you know for me its not that "paradise" or anything, but ultimately, we will be all in one place again. i dont really care if its one empty hole or another planet nor anything we will experience actively, i just want to have that feel of reunitaion if you want.
 
a long long longgggg time ago back when life was very primitive I can absolutely understand why people decided to believe that "gods" and such were responsible for things in nature that they couldn't explain. I mean it's not like they had any other methods to explain it so it makes sense.
Fast forward to present day.
Just about everything in nature and in our world can be explained through proven science at this point, therefore eliminating the need for religion to explain things which previously couldn't be understood.
So why in the fucking hell are so many people still believing in gods and myth and everything else? It's clearly impossible to prove to be remotely true whereas science can prove the cause and effect of everything that religion sought to explain. I really did try to be open minded about religion for awhile, but honestly at this point I can't help but think that people who are highly religious are just in denial and are just plain stupid.

If you use religion as something for good, something that makes you feel comforted and helped you to behave better and contribute to society - then you know what? That's awesome. Keep doing it.

This is a really good and valid point. Religion has become outdated. I think it's lasted this long because it had become SO ingrained into society. Also, science can not yet prove what happens after death, so people are still looking for answers.

I'm not too concerned with what other people believe. Meh. Whatever makes you stronger.
 
I fail to see why everyone insists on arguing politics and relegion over the internet. Everyone just gets their remarks in with pointless banter in between. Nothing gets done except for each side just getting more and more pissed.
 
not trying to prove or disprove anything, because with religion that is impossible. Just trying to say you don't know what the fuck is going on and neither do I.
 
i feel very similar. if someone in a tough situation gets some help from saying a prayer, fine with that.

it has a lot to do with culture though. for example, go to iceland. its a western country like the ones we both live in, but people there just know that elbs exist.

a lot of stuff cannot be explained. just like so much of the deep sea is unknown, some meteorologist phenomenons are unexplained and stuff like that. if you read hawking, we are actually far away from explaining everything.

but still i think that intelligent people arent using religion to explain the world nor should anyone do it.
 
i don't mind other people's beliefs unless they're pushing them on me. i just don't believe in any of it. it's cool if you do, in some ways but i'm not arguing about it. i'm not even saying that i'm right and you're wrong for believing in god and whatever else, i just have a different opinion than you. what's annoying is when people argue about it and try to say they're right because who really knows anyway. i'm not really good at saying what i mean but i think that made a little sense...
 
i like how you gave an example of what death is like and then went on to say nobody knows what happens when you die. This is why i hate Atheists they bad mouth christians and then go ahead and tell you what it's like when you die. You don't know any more than religious people do.

this. if someone comes up to me and says "im christian" i will say "cool, i respect that."

if someone comes up to me and tells me how i am going to burn in hell, then its different.

also, when people of any religion refuse to enter a logical argument about evolution. "god made evolution as a test for true believers" is not a legit way to refute the scientific evidence of evolution. i do actually know people like this, who are so blinded by their religion that they refuse to accept a proven theory, they just say "god did this, god did this", over and over until i just decide it isnt worth the effort.

 
Well, if you want to get scientific. Our thoughts are really just electric signals firing back and forth in our brain. When our heart stops, those signals stop firing. We cease to think and we cease to live. Just like every other piece of organic matter, we will decompose. Do trees have a life after death? Do all animals? Insects? It seems like a ridiculous concept to me that some "inner soul" thing gets transported to some other dimension after we die.
 
Exactly. However I can back up everything I believe in with the scientific method. It is literally possible to look back in time and find when Christianity was "invented". I don't know and neither do you. I put in the quote about death because I think it is interesting to think about. I am sorry, but at this point I look at religion as a mental disease.

Or how about this: "I sweating my balls off." I don't know, maybe you do. I also find it funny that "atheists" are more prone to shove their beliefs down your throat than most "religious folk" are. They also seem to take pride in how logical and open minded they are, yet they often are illogical and closed minded. Now I will admit, there are people who honestly just don't believe and accept the fact that in this country religion is a big deal and that they just live their life and not bother anyone. But it's the teen hipsters who think that the world has done them wrong because mommy and daddy made them go to church on Sundays that are making atheists all look like assholes to the rest of the world.

The bible is the complete and infallible word of God, it is complete and perfect in every way. It's not symbolic, that's how thing's are actually supposed to be. I have a question, what if science is false? or is eventually deemed primitive? then are you any different than people who use religion to explain the world?

They way I see it matter and energy formed in a very particular, in a sense "magical" way, that allows us to interpret ambient energy and store that energy as memories. Sense everything we interpret is based on individual perception, all scientific "fact" is still based on subjective observances.

Do we really know that 2+2+4? I know for all that matters it does equal 4 and that is what separates enlightened people from idiot fucks, but what makes us so sure there really is such thing as 2. All in all science is just an updated school of thought that serves the same purpose of religion, to explain the world around us, but looking back at history that means our "science" is most likely bullshit.

If someone came up to you and told you that the earth was flat, or that lions don't exist, and for proof of their claims they provided a book written 1500 years ago. Would you think they were mentally capable? What if they said that there is a giant octopus living on Titan a moon of Saturn. This octopus is all knowing and all powerful and created everything that we know and everything that is? Its just as arbitrary as a carpenter that could walk on water. It's all a fantasy and anyone that provides an absolute answer, philosophy, or description of the afterlife or god is fucking retarded.
 
this post is actually not bad. i like the way your thinking. what i conclude from it is that nothing is certain and religion and science are just there to give us some kind of certainity in a world we cannot understand.

very deep, but from a pragmatic view i will stick with science since it gives me appropriate explanations for my life. maybe the whole world is just a fake constructed in our heads, we dont know and as long as the relativiy of quantums is the ultimate goal, i will stick with science.

I did a skit in a religious studies class once (I took it for shits and giggles) about that night. It went something like this (there were 5 of us per group)

"We are the three pilgrims here to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ"- Me and two other friends

"Mary, when did you get pregnant and have a child?"

"The angels gave me the baby last night honey I swears it!"

"YOU LIE!!!! YOU DIRTY WHORE!!!!"

"IT WAS THE ANGELS!!!!"

At this point, me and the other two pilgrims walked out sheepishly amongst the yelling.

science is based off of observation and calculation.

religion is based off a book that was blatantly written over a span of several thousand years, from various different accounts, that dont always match up.

believe what you will, but thats the difference.

and as to your 2+2 analogy

2+2=4 no matter what you call it

pretty much every atheist who has posted in this is the reason people hate atheists. im no fan of organized religion either, but i feel no need to vocalize it to appear cooler or above people. science is not the end all to everything either. i'm a biology major and i'll be the first to admit we are still extremely infantile in what we know about the universe's innerworkings so please stop giving the rest of the atheists and the rest of the scientists a bad name. go steal a kids lunch money or something if you really have the urge to appear more powerful than others, leave the intellectual sphere alone.
