Asteroid is going to barely miss Earth Nov 8th

Haha, that and it could easily wipe out entire cities, states, and small countries... Its 400 meters, thats not the biggest ever, but its more than big enough to fuck shit up. The one that killed off the dinosaurs was like 10km across, and it left a crater 110 miles in diameter. The one that exploded several km above siberia and leveled 800 square miles of forest was (don't know remember exactly how big it apparently was) a good bit smaller than 400 meters. At 400 meters, some serious shit would go down if it hit or blew up above any population center.

From the article

"It is, however, still officially labelled a 'potentially hazardous object' - if it was to hit Earth, it would exert a force the equivalent of 65,000 atomic bombs and leave a crater six miles wide and 2,000ft deep."

Six miles is big, but not big at all compared to the actual size of our earth. And it wouldn't even be a mile deep, this thing is puny. Worst case scenario it hits land and a couple million people die.

Wait a second.

How does that projected path animation not show the effect Earth's gravity will have on that asteroid?

In other words, won't the asteroids path be moved because of this?

it's probably moving fast enough that earth doesn't have enough time to bend its path that much. but thats just a guess though.

HOW TO DEFLECT AN ASTEROID
Scientists have come up with a number of different ways of deflecting an incoming asteroid from its path, some more realistic than others.

Here are a few of the best ideas:Nuclear blast: A large nuclear explosion on an asteroid might be enough to deflect an asteroid but has significant political and ethical problems. And what if we just blew it into smaller pieces?
Using mirrors: A fleet of spacecraft carrying light-reflecting mirrors might be able to vaporise the asteroid's surface using the Sun's rays. The gases from its surface would create a tiny amount of thrust - enough to divert it.
Gravity tractor: Crashing a spacecraft into the asteroid would certainly be the cheapest option. The ship's own tiny gravity would then help move the asteroid's path. But this option would take a long time to make a difference.[/list]

Yeah I said it wasn't that big relatively speaking. And yeah, a few million people would die. Is that not a substantial effect?

Also, thats assuming it were to impact. Look up Tunguska. That happened with a rock that was like 30 meters across or something. Thats 800 miles of carnage because of a 30 meter rock. Imagine that, but 400 meters, and in a population center.

Neither scenario will happen. Just saying, some winy Christians would probably be the least of our concerns if it did.

Yeah duuude huge asteroids hitting earth wouldn't fuck anything up, oh wait no you're wrong shut up.

yeah, uh.... it would really REALLY fuck shit up if it hit the earth.
like, it would kill all the dinosaurs...
but seriously, the NASA estimate was that the impact would be equivalent to 880 megatons of TNT, then revised to 510 megatons. The impacts which created the Barringer Crater or the Tunguska event are estimated to be in the 3–10 megaton range. so basically we would be super fucked.

you would be very, very surprised. In fact, im almost positive your trolling. 65,000 atomic bombs? puny?

do a little research on asteroid impacts

most likley wont be visible, unless were lucky and we can see the sun reflecting off of it (aka how we see the moon) but thats crazy, specially if it did hit the moon (if it did i could throw it off orbit and wed die)

Oh 201,700 miles? That's all? That's over 25 earths away. That's like caring about someone kicking a soccer ball at my face and missing by almost 7 yards.

Nobody is disputing the facts you stated. Its the whole "no big deal" attitude, if you are in fact being serious about that.
