Asher roth

Haven't heard it yet but Lark on My Go-Cart was the biggest piece of trash I've heard in a long time.
 
I stopped listening when he randomly claims to save hip hop in the song about college. He contributes to a glamorous, commerce-oriented hipster rap, something that's all too often confused with hip hop because it doesn't have the harshness or gangster rap. Asher Roth what did you do to save hip hop?
 
so you need to have "harshness" or be "gangster" to be hip hop?thats the dumbest thing ive heard. im not saying hes the next nas or biggie by ANY means, but as soon as someone plays up to a different crowd everyone is up in arms. everyone has a misconception that rap needs to be cutting edge or talk about drugs, money, gangs, violence, etc. wrong.lyrics do not make a genre of music. Big L and Immortal Technique are just two of my favorite rappers of many, and they happen to use "harsh" lyrics, but that isnt what makes them good. its the way they flow, and the beats that they rap over. just because everyone doesnt talk about harsh things doesnt mean you just disregard them talentwise, because asher has some. If you asked 100 random people who listened to rap,i bet 80 of them would be from like 13-25, which is exactly why he would market a song about college, because of its relatability. so as we sit here bitching about how he doesnt have shit for talent, hes probably sitting at home, letting the money roll through his fingers.
 
I wouldn't generalize hip hop listeners like that.

First you are seriously misconstruing hip hop and rap. Although they are becoming more and more synonymous lately you still can't assume all hip hop and rap have a "harshness"

The reason Asher Roth even has a market largely due to how unharsh (yeah I know) hip hop has become. Even though I don't like the term "hipster" rap is largely taking over the college and highschool markets. Artists that are talking about their lives on a very relatable level for almost everyone. Asher Roth is thinking he can do this same kind of music but make it relatable to suburban college kids.

Which is a cool concept. But his music just sucks now. His metaphors are tired, his beats are stolen, his whole personae is becoming more of a college "bro" rather than a college male.

I'm totally bummed on his new album. After hearing (and loving btw) Greenhouse Effect Vol 1. I was really excited for Asleep in the Bread Aisle. Now I'm almost dreading 4/20 because I know people are going to shut the hell up about his lyrics and how tight his album is.

im not generalizing anyone, i never said it needed "harshness" the thread creator did. i was posting just trying to prove my point, and my point being that he does have talent. jay-z likes him, and i dont think hed say that about some joke.
 
He still raps about pointless shit. For me the lyrics are one of the most important parts. I really think all he has is flow. That sure as hell shouldn't make you blow up like he has.

The only reason he's this big is because he's marketable. There are thousands of people more talented than him that will never even get 1% as much exposure as Roth is getting. The record label saw dollar signs when they saw a white kid who had flow and they ran with it.
 
Ill give you guys a couple of my thoughts.

1. Asher Roth is better then the college song, and the green house effect proves that.

2. Asher Roth puts on a hell of a concert, and the tickets for his show and still $5 or $10.

3. Asher Roth wont save hip hop by himself. But this will be the year that hip hop has a reniassance. Together Asher, Charles Hamilton, Kid Cudi, B.O.B will honestly do a great deal for hip hop. They are all different, and bring something new to the table.
 
I guess I fail to see why hip hop needs to be saved. The only thing it needs to be saved from in my opinion is people like Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, and Kid Cudi. Call me old fashioned, but I like hip hop for what it is, smart lyrics with clever and dynamic flow. Everything I've heard of Asher Roth's is as stated above, tired and borrowed. If you ask me-Only Built for Cuban Linx 2 is what will "save" hip hop, or rap, or whatever label you think belongs.
 
I mean its all relative. Depeding on which type of hip hop you listen to you will like people or hate people. All 3 of those that I mentioned will blow up and be mainstream artists. But, they a really different than whats out there now. If mainstream isnt your thing, then they shouldnt even bother you with the music they make.

 
i agree with you completely. when someone talks to me incessantly about how talented asher roth i stop listening immediately. i cant even begin to try to take someone like that seriously. and im all for the mid 90s hip hop scene. why do you think that is the benchmark for all hip-hop created since then?!? nawmean? and i can dig drake, and wale, and jay electronica, etc but even they cannot come close to what once was. also why any of the talented emcees of today never stop giving props to the forefathers.
 
Anyone heard Slaughterhouse? Or at least some of the tracks they've released. Some of the best shit I've ever heard.
 
Slaughterhouse is the shit. They have their own radio on shade 45 and its real intresting to listen to. Joe Budden is probally one of the smartest people in hip hop.
 
DUUUDE. B.O.B. is so sick. I stumbled across the LRG mixtape and there are some hot ones. muy caliente.
 
for all the shitty rap/hip hop out there id have many more people ahead in line than asher roth to bag on.
 
I don't give a fuck what else he makes, that stupid fucking College song makes him the tooliest toolshed I've ever had the displeasure of listening to. I thought it was an anti-drug-and-alcohol ad the first time I saw it on TV... I wish it was, that woulda been funny. As an actual song though... worst thing since Crank Dat, and that's saying a lot.
 
Its no were near crank dat. I dont care if you have a personal vendetta with asher roth and want to kill him, but dont compare him to Soulja Boy.
 
Everyone hear needs to appreciate Asher Roth even if you think hes bad, because contrary to your opinion Asher Roth is a good artist. While some of his songs are a bust, he raps about what he knows, stop talking about rap and hip-hop, whats core and not. Learn to appreciate music for what it is and finally enjoy instead of bickering
 
I still don't see how he's a good artist? But whatever this argument is tired.

Asleep in the bread aisle is gonna go like 10 times platinum and we're going to be subjected to this filth for a long time. I just wish the hip hop blogs would stop posting topics about him. It's annoying when I have to hear for the 20th time how he is different than everyone else and doesn't like being compared to eminem.
 
hahah my school (st. mikes) was going to have Lupe with asher opening. because we are a catholic school the admin. didn't want that type of "message" in the community. I'm told we are now getting someone better, but I can't say I've heard enough asher to really make an opinion. haha
 
what asher roth is: trite college bro natty ice drinking hip hop. and that i can not appreciate. and marketable means that he appeals to the majority of tards out there b/c its beyond them to even fathom what intelligent hip-hop etc would sound like. and if they heard it, they wouldnt even know what to do with it. i do not need him to remind me about everything that is wrong with the majority of college parties.

and asher roth has decent vocal skills. But look at hip hop, it has complitely gone from the black hood to the white suburbs and you can't deny that at all. I admit it-I'm white, jewish, somewhat wealthy, from the suburbs and I listen to strictly hip hop.

So what do you think record labels are going to be looking for? - a white guy with a decent flow that appeals to white people from the suburbs. I mean a hip hop song about college parties-that just sounds retarded.

Listen to an interview with him, he talks about how he use to listen to like Dave Mathews Band until he 'discovered' hip hop. Give me a break, he aint hip hop at all. Sure I'm not saying that you have to be black and live in a poor run-down inner city neighborhood to be hip hop, but dude grew up listening to dave matthews band, idk, its just not appealing that I've been listening to hip hop for longer that he has and probably know more about it.

And hes not that good, but better than soulja boy and wayne but thats not saying much
 
well that's your opinion. On the other hand, I like my hip hop to sound like it just bubbled out of the pot on the stove
 
word you and i have similar hip hop tastes then. I never get tired of all that classic shit. My favorite mid 90s artist would have to be Lord Finesse. but i dig that coke rap as well. I do not want to hear about some lame college party Asher Roth went to where he ate free pizza. I have to avoid shit like that every weekend!
 
Just goes to show that anyone can write a song about drinking and college and make it big. I personally hate this song, and everyone who says he's a good rapper needs to get their mind checked out.
 
yeah, sorry, but "I love college" did me in. i understand that does not sum Asher Roth up but that song hurts my soul.
And while I do like the fresh breath of Kid Cudi etc, i think about what i truly love listening too. Its all stuff that came out when i was a kid.
