ARG's vs Hellbents

Alright heres the deal. I am wanting to get a pair of pow skis this year. I have three other pairs of skis for park/all mtn/race so i do not need a ski that can do all of that for me, however it may be nice to at least be able to ski down a groomer if I have to. I think that I have narrowed it down the the ARG or Hellbent (although I could probably get by with something smaller like the obsethed or JJ). I ski the northwest mainly, but I may go to college in colorado or montana next year (I'm a senior this year) and would like to bring this ski with me. I am about 160 lbs, 5'10". I have skied my entire life and would consider myself an experienced rider. I need the ski to beable to do cliffs, trees, open bowls, whatever related to pow. Also, I currently ride almost always inbounds, however I am interested in bc stuff.

Cliff Notes: I want a pow ski. I ski northwest mainly, 18 years old, very experienced, 160lbs, 5'10"

ARG/Hellbent???

To be honest with you, ya cant go wrong with either of them. If you already have park skis and will only be skiing powder then it's sort of about personal preference. However if you'd be skiing pow and some groomers then definitley consider the JJs. They're still super soft and will kill it in the BC, but can handle bowls and the steeps better than a fully rockered ski like the two you mentioned.

im gonna say 179 hellbent. why? because i have read what seems like hundreds of reviews on this ski and VERY few of them have even mentioned something negative about this ski. i also know that its gonna ski groomers much better than the ARG. nothing against the ARG, its fuckin crazy, but the Hellbent is famous for being able to ski everything and still kick ass at pow like its supposed to. it has to be the only ski that ive seen that got one of the best reputation in the shortest amount of time, that i have ever seen... cant go wrong with it.

everything you said in that statement was correct except for the part about the new JJs being soft.

They are just about as beefy as the ARG underfoot and have maybe a bit more give in the tip and tail- and the ARG is nowhere near soft.

Other than that, I agree with your post.

yo get some hellbents cause then if you want to go on groomers and have fun with your rockered boards and play around in the park, you can!!! the ARG's will just be super sluggish out of the pow beacuse of the reverse sidecut, whereas the regular sidecut hellbents will allow you to ski in the park and on groomers once all the pow is tracked out. i like my hellbents cause i use them for 1. pow and 2. days when i just want to fuck around on groomers with the rocker

179 bents for sure. just so you can ski down groomers. and thanks for making a thread with all the info we need

do u want a really stiff charging ski or a more playful more versatile ski? if the first get the args if the second get bents

EPs for uber playfullness, they are so much fun and slay pow cliffs trees. If youre charging 3 day old shit snow then they arent so hot, but it sounds like you have a big enough quiver not to deal with that~

thanks for the input guys. also, I do a fair amount of tree skiing, and i have heard that the ARG is better for trees...how agile are bents in trees? Also, which ski would do better in traced out, two day old crud?

ya i will definitilly check out the bibby's aswell. As far as bindings go...I have a brand new pair of FKS 185's sitting here...I am assuming that I can use them. Im 160, 5'10" but usually set my din around 10 or 11. Do you think that these bindings would work for me with these skis?

yea for tree skiing rev sidecut will definitely feel better than the bents, your binding will be fine, bibbys are a narrower version of the bents with more sidecut and less rocker, which prolly isnt what you want because with the extra sidecut theyd be hookier in pow. personally i reccomend the args, i rode them and i wish i hadnt because now i really wish i was able to buy more skis and get a pair but im so broke.

if you dont do BC or touring i would go with the hellbents. The only down side to them is that they are heavy as shit but if your not dragging them up the mountain in the BC that is the ski for you.

Sorry to bumb this back up but, after watching the massive and contemplating many nights, I added the JJ's to my possible list of skis. The JJ's are 115 under foot, which i realize is not the 133 of the ARG, however it seems like 115 would be plenty for just about any pow. Also most of the Armada riders are rocking JJ's, and if that is enough ski for them in the rediculouse drops/pow they ride, im guessing that it would be more than enough for anyone...what are your guys' thoughts? Would JJ's be plenty for slaying madd pow?

im in the same position. but the price of the bluehouse Maven is really attractive. im just not sure how they ride or would compare to the jjs or hellbents

hellbents for sure

my friends have em and they love them for everything, they saif there's nothing that they arent good at

i just ordered my pair for this year and im stoked

If you can swing it get a reverse sidecut ski. I'd definitely get a rockered ski though.

The best situation for a (3 ski) quiver is:

1. Park/groomer ski with a waist of under 90, unless it's Anthems

2. All mtn. ski that can handle pow. Waist of 105-115ish, can handle groomers aight and pow, and maybe park if you want

3. Pow only ski, reverse sidecut, rocker, the works. Over 120 underfoot.

I posted the stuff above^^ in another thread too, though it might be useful here, sounds like you got it all covered, in which case I'd go with either the ARG, or the Donner Party. A reverse sidecut ski will perform better in pow, and since you already have your other skis in your quiver all set I'd get reverse sidecut, it will have less overlap.
