Are pro skiers financially straight?

IM not asking how much they make its their business. But does anyone know if they make enough so that when they retire from skiing they don't have to work ever again(like mainstream sports such as bball and football) the only person in extreme sports that im thinking can do that is tony hawk cause he has to be rich as a mutha by now. and since skiing is not as big as snowboarding, will that mean they get less money. cause im like do they get salaries like we do. meaning every 2 weeks or a month a check from rossie, dynastar, k2, line volkl etc comes in their mailbox

Noone knows, everyone in the sport right now is so young and it hasn't been around very long, so noone's really retired yet.

^ yea what he said. go pro and then come back and tell us

changing the stereotype of skiiers one jib at a time

skiing is just like sex. when its good, its goooooood. and when its not so good, its still pretty good.

im tired of the mother fucking jacket!

There is fuck all money involved. No one right now could quit and 'never work a day in their life'. There are a handful of guys out there making some good dough, but that is IT. And let me tell you, THAT IS IT.

6 figures is for the very very few priveleged... the rest get covered on travel, expenses, product, etc... Most of the upper echelon guys would have some kind of retainer, albeit I doubt any are huge, and there are other clauses in contracts for incentives (mag shots, comp results, vid seggys), but they add up to not much most of the time.

Companies (NOT line, NOT armada) are out to buttfuck athletes... they want the most for the least. Unfortunately for the athletes, they aren't in any position with leverage. Support the rider owned companies, and the companies that are coming around. Look how fast Salomon sold out, and how they suck...

And I dont mean they're getting shit pay like its NOTHING... But, in the grand scheme, they should be earning far more than they are.

I know skiing doesnt hold a candle to the pay skateboarders, snowboarders especially surfers are getting.

- G

Nobne of them could retire and not work at a young age. But they have their insides with the companies and they get jobs inside once theya re done skiing.

plenty of skateboarders make money. eric koston was on MTV cribs w/ a sweet house... not to mention Bob Burnquist's house is awesome. I think skiing is changing so fast it will be hard for most pros to stay in it for long and thus they won't make lots of money for a long time

if skiing gets a little more publicized then i think they will get payed a lot more. go up to your averagre person and say 'what is skateboarding' and then say 'what is newschool skiing?' which one are they gonna know more about? And which one will they likely pay more money to go and watch?

man DC sold mor eshoes than Adidas last year.Skateboarding is one of the biggest markets in the world. As for skiing, CRs got a house, and Vinnies got an audi. The top gunsare gettin some good cash but again you could count all then on your hand. the rest just get what they need to ski and get good coverage for free. maybe a little on the side.

I think the fact that alot of the big names are splitting rent multiple ways rather then living in MTV Cribs style mansions says something about how much they're pulling in. The only person that I can imagine as being 'set' is Johnny Mosely. As big as new school skiing is these days, it still pales in comparison to the olympic stage. I'll bet the average american doesn't even know what the phrase refers to.

Rex thomas has a brand new f150 and a brand new summit 800 to go on the back of that thing...

It's all who does it right...no you can't just retire from skiing and be all good but you can certainly live real well while your doin it, which is the point for me anyway. And whoever said the sport is changing so no pros will be able to stay in it that long is dead wrong. If the sport turns out like that I will be thouroughly dissapointed in it all. Sports are meant to take care of the people that make them happen, the athletes...if an athlete starts to lose his/her edge there should be a niche for them somewhere else in the sport and this is what is going on right now. things are good and getting better everyday...although it is still all about the competitions. victory equals power/

honestly, they aren't going to have the money after they blow their knees or they hit old school purgatory. i just wonder about the tanner halls that quit school to ski...what happens later??

A snowflake never blames itself for the avalanche...

Omg skrchick85, thats why i made this post, cause i wanna thinking about the tanner halls. and for some reason when I first made this post, I also knew I was gonna get my first scotched post. Thats what I call them. I expected his fag ass to say something cause I mentioned money. And seriously Ns needs to moderate this mess. This has to be the most free message board ever. two much freedom can be a bad thing. So unless scotch is secretly a pro(which is why harvey seemily ignores all the fag ass crap scotch does) he needs to go. This site should not go downhill. Peace, 1 love

It's a rumor. Go re-read the Powder article, it said that there were rumors floating around that he got $1 mil for the contract but Salomon doesn't have to divulge that information so he could have gotten that much after all... im sorry, im rambling like a 14 yr old on the site.

The Cameron Crowe of the ski industry, just watch...

Dude it is rumours about how much Candide was signed for. Ask yourself this, how many 'Candides' are ripping around. How many 'Candides' have been absolutely killing it since '99 X-games. It could be easily argued that there are no other high profile skiers like Candide.

That said, and given the benefit of the doubt, $1 Million is hardly something you could 'not work another day in your life with' (How old is he? 20?).

- G

Most pro skiers don't make nearly as much money as you think. As has been said before, travel cash, performance incentives, gear, etc, are usual forms of compensation, and the best of the best/most established pros get some salary or a retainer. Some have contracts in which the amount of prize money they get is matched by their sponsors. Most riders get screwed for cash. And Thovex did NOT sign for anything close to a million, if the other 'rumours' going around are correct.

A small comparison which I've posted before: Wade Simmons(pro mtb rider, Rocky Mountain, Oakley, some others) dropped a 40someodd foot cliff on his bike for an Oakley ad(Quite big for a bike cliff drop). His agent happened to meet the stunt coordinators for Xmen2. He showed them the pic, and asked what it would be worth in Hollywood. The answer: A MINIMUM of $100 000. One shot. Quote from the agent: 'I looked at Wade's Oakley contract and cried'. Sure it's Hollywood, sure it's big business, etc etc etc, but it shows you the disparity between 'Professional' athletes and stuntmen(a good comparison for the most part)...and baseball players get payed how much??? Something's wrong with that...
