Are kegs worth it?

ok, so from everyonoe's experience, are kegs worth it? And what are the costs associated with it? and do I need a kegerator? I honestly don't know haha

It all depends on your scenario. If your going to be throwing a lot of keg-worthy parties than fuck yeah but it's a hassle if you aren't throwing big parties obviously.

You only need a kegerator if you're planning on using it over a long period of time in which case a keg really isn't worth it, it's more of just a cool thing to have. Kegs are totally worth it if you have a lot of people to drink them in a short period of time

You just rent the keg from a liquor store and get your deposit back when you return it. Make sure you order it a week in advance.

Its like anywhere from $60 to $90 depending on the beer then you get, then you get $20 to $30 back when you return the keg. Prices are gonna be different where you are most likely though

concept of buying in bulk. if you want a bulk amount of beer go for it, if not just get a few cases.

If you have a job for a distribution company or can otherwise get them at wholesale, get a kegorator. A buddy of mine worked for Coors and used to bring back Linenkuegul, Blue Moon, and such in the smaller kegs (6 or 10 gallons I think) and we set up a mini fridge with the CO2 hookups and the tap on top. It was fucking rad.

Totally worth it. Why would you need a kegerator? Just get a bucketa and a bunchbof ice, grab some friends and get fucked up. If you need somebody to guard the keg at 7 am hit me up. Im a pro at making sure nobody steals the keg. I guard it for up to 24 hours or until its safely kicked

So, your typical half barrel keg is 15.5 gallons which, figure 8 pints in a gallon and you get 120 something pints give or take how much foam you spray out, people doing keg stands, people spraying it everywhere for no reason, people that got they cups but they ain't chipped in, etc. Its more beer for cheaper if that's what you are wondering.

What if someone comes to steal it in the 26th hour?

You don't need a kegerator for a party. You just buy a keg, then you put it in a garbage can or big plastic bin from a big box store. Put ice in said garbage can or container and pack it around the keg. You do this to keep the keg cold, which keeps the beer cold. Once you are ready to start drinking beer you put a keg tap on the keg. Then you put beer in cups, and then you drink the beer out of the cups. When your cup gets empty you refill it by pumping the keg tap to get air pressure and then putting more beer from the keg tap into your cup. When no more beer comes out you have had all the beer that is in your keg and you have no more. You now put the tub in your garage for next time, and you take the empty keg and tap back to the place that you got it from to get your deposit back.

For a normal party I'm going through almost 4 cases so I figured it might be worth it, thanks for all the responses! So when I return the keg I get almost $20 back from my initial investment? If so it's definitely worth it.

no, the deposit for the shell and the tap are above and beyond the price of the keg. You put down a refundable deposit because you're renting them.

if you don't return the tap and shell (and bucket if you rent that too) you lose part or all of your deposit.

I can't remember, but I think a keg of coors light for example is like 80.00. Then if you put down a $10 deposit for a bucket, and $40 for tap, and $40 for keg shell, your total would be like $170, but you'd get back the $90 in deposit fees back. Of course all of these deposit amounts vary based on where you go.

This might help:

Also, keep in mind that when people say "keg" of beer, they mean a half keg. So if you google it, and you see "half keg" this is what you're thinking of when you picture a standard party keg.

If it's around $80 for 75 beers then it might not be worth it

Who said 75 beers?

There are 190-220 12oz beers in a standard keg (half barrel)

sorry, fuck. i mean about 150-165 12 oz beers.

a keg=6.88 24 packs (cases) according to wikipedia.

and sorry for the triple post, but i now know why you said 75 beers-- that's a pony keg (1/4 barrel). The typical keg you see at most parties is twice that (1/2 barrel)

Be aware that if you have minors at your party and your state has keg registration you'll be leaving a paper trail straight back to the buyer. But otherwise yes, they are.

try to obtain a tap/pump for yourself so that you dont need to keep putting down deposits on that. kegs end up being way cheaper than cases if you get the full deposits back

Don't buy a bronco tap they suck. Yes get a keg, you don't need a kegerator but if you do decide to save it make sure to un-tap it until you use it again

garbage can > ice

and, kegs can be fun if you have a lot of people but not too many. Generally the just result in wasted beer or not enough drunkeness.

I don't like kegs, but that's just me.

I was at this big party this summer and they had 13 kegs of beer and it was gone like 2-3 hours.

OP buy 13 kegs itll be worth your while

People also love to steal taps so you have to watch it closely to avoid losing your deposit.

There's a bit of skill involved in tapping it without making it too foamy so I suggest reading up on it if you decide to get one. Also transport it relatively carefully, it sucks to pay a lot for a keg and have the first 10 cups be entirely foam with 1/4 inch of beer at the bottom

Well that depends. I know several people who have kegerators and taps in their home and while it may not be the most shall we say "useful" element in the home it certainly is a guest favorite- and without all the cans and bottles too. Lots of breweries only release small batches in beer logs too, so there's that as well.

I'm actually cruising CL right now passively looking for a dorm fridge to hand over to my friends for a conversion to kegerator. I guess it's just one of those things that let you know you're winning at life when you manage to have a kegerator with heady beers in it at your house. It's a joy in and of itself!

Just had a Halloween keg party. It was generally just close friends so we opted to get a 1/4 barrel(1/2 is standard). It ended up being 62.5+(2$ rental tap *day).

You'll be surprised by how much beer 85 cups is. It took us another night of drinking to finish it off.

Things to know:

-Read up on keg and how to tap/pour/pump

-Transport carefully. You're going to get a few first foamy beers now matter what, though.

-For cooling, a simple tall bucket filled with ice will do.

-For drinking, make sure you put a sign up on how when to pump so people aren't going insane pumping it 20 times only to have beer come out like a fire hose.

-Tell people before hand that you have a keg so that everyone else doesn't end up bringing alcohol. Seriously, I had people bringing handles of everything you can imagine which is why we couldn't finish the keg in a night

Honestly I'm partially just trying to convince myself that I don't need one, but I would absolutely love to have one. We have a bar in our apartment and looked into a way to run a tap up through the bar from a mini fridge kegerator below, but in the end we just didn't have enough money

I'm going to go to my local beer distributor and inquire about prices and such today. A ton of friends are coming down to my place to party this weekend so a keg would be pretty sweet. Thanks for all the advice guys!

You dont need to buy the most expensive beer or best tasting. most beers taste good tapped and considering keg=binge drinking buy cheap beer and tap the keg wwell ahead of time

Pour a few bottles of everclear into a big water cooler and then pour a shitload of tang in there if you really wanna get fugged up.

Pick it up at least a day before if it's not chilled. They take a long time to cool.

and if you just carry it in and throw it in a trash can full of ice, it gets super shook up leading to more foam

no dude, you do need one. trust me. i have one and I love it. the only BAD thing about a kegerator is i tend to drink a shit load more beer when I have a barrel on tap.

They are only really cost effective if you're buying cheap beer. For example, a keg of keystone typically costs $50 whereas buying an equivalent number of single beers would run you ~$80. If you want something more expensive like Blue Moon, the hassle of the keg really is not worth it. A keg of Blue Moon will typically run you $150 whereas you could buy an equivalent number of singles for $160.

Another major issue with kegs is the very real issue of possibly being forced to throw away a portion of the keg if people don't drink all of it. Cans and bottles can be stored until a later date, but kegs are only good for about 24 hours after they're tapped (unless you have a kegerator).

Who get's a keg of blue moon. Also if you can't finish a single keg you aren't trying hard enough or you realize that nobody wants to go to your party even when there's a keg.

Aaaaahahaha blue moon. You crack me up. Never change, whitey... Never change.

keggerators are whats up.

I found one on craigslist for $120 last spring. They're awesome for homebrew and the occasional commercial keg. It makes drinking every night way too easy, especially when it's right in the living room.

When I lived in a house with four people, we drank so much beer that buying by the case was stupid. We bought a keg for ourselves every week or so and added to that if we had parties.

All depends on location. 24 pack is $9.99 in any Ohio college town. You're not going to beat roughly $.42/beer for the convenience.

and remember to bring a friend to get the keg home. kegs are heavy. you may be able to lift by yourself but it's not really safe.

In Ohio college town, beer is not $10 a case. Where do you buy your beer?
