Are helmets really safe?

Depends on helmet type, type of fall and how well the helmet fits. Hard foam helmets generally are designed to prevent a skull fracture/keep you alive if you slam your dome going real fast. Softer foam helmets tend to do a better job at preventing concussions at lower speed impacts. If you can comfortably out your goggles up without unbuckling your helmet, your problem could be right there. You can still get concussed from general shock impacts such as landing on your back. Clacking your jaw (typically from taking a knee to the face) can also get you in a real bad spot.

My theory is that having less weight on your head is somewhat useful for keeping your head off the ground/put of the way, making it better than a bad helmet, but still worse than a good one.

Helmets don't really help much with concussions other than softening the blow, theyre mostly for if you slam your head into a tree.

helmets do help. especially one with MIPS. If you've had a hard hit with a helmet, get a new one. could explain your multiple concussions wearing a helmet as a single impact condenses the foam (which was there to slow the impact) and does not rebound. Once the foam has been crushed, it does nothing after that for protection. Also remember to replace every 4-5years as the heating and cooling cycles of the materials cause issues with durability as well. It's cheap $100 insurance. why wouldnt you protect your brain.. unless you dont have one of course.

This guy is a narc and his best trick is straight grind front 2

Ski Helmets are not like DOT motorcycle helmets and wont really help you if you nail a tree at 50 mph. There is actually a pretty interesting study on it:

https://unofficialnetworks.com/2018/06/20/new-ski-helmet-study-finds-surprising-results/

Basically, a helmet will help for minor skull fractures and impacts but should not give you a false sense of security that it will help if you really hit something at freeway speeds. There is really no reason not to wear one, the vent system alone is nice because it allows you to control how warm your head is.

"The report also found that skiers and snowboarders that wear helmets were less likely to suffer injuries to other parts of their body than non-helmet wearers."

Idk man I've walked away from a few good slams off rails where a helmet has saved my ass. Hits hard enough to crack the foam and once cracked the shell.

Yes because they decrease the severity of trauma thats sustained with TBIs (concussions) but do not entirely prevent them. Damage is still being done and theres just no way around that when it comes to head injuries, but you're gonna be way better off in the long run with a good helmet vs. not wearing one.

football players get concussions all the time even though they wear helmets. That's not a reason to stop wearing them.

Are we actually still talking about helmets? Do people really still think their skulls are tougher than trees and rocks still? I thought we've moved on. I know NS is slow sometimes, but we can think of a more constructive conversation I'm sure

My 2 cents on helmets

I always wear one, definitely have had a few slams coming high speed out of a chute where I would have seriously fucked my bare head on hardpack were it not for helmet.

Also saw a snowboarder at Brighton come screaming out of a tree run night riding and go about 15 feet through the air off a sidebooter before landing forehead first on some ice, this was near the bottom of crest. The sound was a big crack and he was out cold gushing blood onto the snow, patrol arrived and he still wasn't up by the time I was skiing down by and they were putting him on a sled to go the 200 yards back to patrol shack. If he'd had a helmet he probably would have been knocked out but not in danger of having severe blood loss, there had to be a good couple pints on the ground it seemed. Do what you want but I always think of it as you never know when you'll hook an edge or some shit and put your head in dsnger. Better to protect the most important part of your body any way you can.

Skiers are such retards that at least once a year this site has a thread where people try to question in all seriousness that helmets are safer than no helmets

nature is amazing...!

Ironically, football would be quite a bit safer without helmets and pads. Not a fair comparison to skiing though.

Would you rather I hit you in the head with a baseball bat wearing or not wearing a helmet? If you'd choose the helmet route, why not wear one when you are skiing and have a chance to hit your noggin' on a tree, rail, or hard snow?

That being said, I only wear one about half the time. I guess I'm an idiot too.

True, but only park skiers.
