this isn't the first time that this question has occurred to me. but yesterday it seemed really obvious... before you tell me that i'm a fucking idiot consider this list of english bands:

the who, the beatles, pink floyd, the rolling stones, the beatles, jeff beck, the animals, david bowie, the clash, sex pistols, stiff little fingers, the prodigy, the chemical brothers, paul okenfold, fatboy slim, basement jaxx, the streets, new order, the cure, travis, radiohead, coldplay, the spice girls, this list could go on forever...

even jimi was smart enough to get two enlish guys (mitch mitchell and joel redding) playing in his group, fuck england is where he went to get famous. well other than my old high school...

one things for sure, the scene in london is nasty and england has managed to produce a lineage of dominating goups...

rebuttles patriots?

how can so much stupid fit into one sentence: 'i have already attempted, but the cross wouldnt lite and the cops were coming so we left, but this summer im gonna burn a 15ft cross in this family's yard on 4th of july, dressed as britains to make it more fun.' - DENALI44

You all forgot DIZZEE RASCAL!!!

But also the streets are an allright group but there music is groundbreaking or anything, like alot of the bands you listed. Britsh music has been laking for the last ten years or so though, but in the past they have had incrdible bands that have came out of there.

well i would have listed dizzee but he hasn't been around for long enough...hes going to though.

Bwahaha, the 'continent of England'. England is a country that is part of Great Britain, it's hardly a 'continent'!

U2 aren't English! They are Irish, another Celtic band that I was referring to in my earlier post, how i forgot them I'll never know :(

Punk music as it is known today started with The Dolls, Television and the Ramones in NYC, the only limey punk band before the Ramones toured there in 76 was the Damned, after that bands like the Sex Pistols and the Clash started popping up. All music leading up to that could be considered influences, but if you were to define punk there would be a picture of the Ramones.

^define punk? i think a majority of people would disagree. this is of course preference, but i see bands like the sex pistols (regarless of how famous they are they are fucking amazing) and the clash who are both british. but thats besides the point. shit was occuring on either side of the atlantic. the new york dolls are not entirely considered part of the punk genre (mostly proto punk and some new york punk), we may look at them that way now, but while they were around they were mostly considered to be rock. the first american punk band was the ramones and the first british punk band was the sex pistols - because they were the first bands that were of the labeled 'punk' genre. so you definately can't say it was american.

i hope you are not referring to musical talent. The beatles play very simple music with no meaning. I can't believe that people think they are such a great band i mean, listen to their songs do they have anything complicated about them.....no. I mean come on,'i am the walrus, whooooooaaaa, i am the eggman, whooooooaaa, do do do do da do dooo' how much talent does it take to come up with such ignorant lyrics?. Now some punk bands i like. The spice girls oh my freckin gosh what talent do they have?(there're hot atleast)Listen to this JIMI HENDRIX, STEVE VAI, JOE SATRIANI, DAVE MUSTAIN(MEGADETH)and the list goes on these are very talented musicians. One of the greatest bands to come out of Britain is Led Zepplin. And like another guy said what about Austrailia?America?(where true rock n' roll originated)I'd love to hear how talented you think most of the people you listed are.

^great response i am saying what i think.I mean don't take it seriously i am just wondering why some1 is saying that one country comes out with all the best music. I don't know about some of you but lately not much good new stuff has come out lately.Except some bands are not bad. It seems more of the old bands are better than the new ones though.

I'm sory,i am way too lazy to tell you why i said that suck. And don't get into a oh how mature was my response attitude

Beatles are and were great, and there's not a single band that has inspired so many musicians.

'five0 is a crazy sexy nutcracker motherfucker'.I hope you have reached a high level of happiness now

jibber2004, that was one of the most ignorant posts regarding music i've ever come across. i just spent a lot of time explaining to someone else why you can't denounce the beatle's talent, both musically and lyrically, and i don't feel like doing it again, so look at the led zeppelin thread a bit further down. if youdon't get it after reading that, well then maybe i'll write it out again.

Before you start reading I just want to say that this is strictly just my own opinion of the beatles as musicians, role s, and pioneers in rock music. If you like the Beatles that's fine I respect that. But I do have my freedom of speech so here is eleven reasons why the Beatles aren't great as other bands in my world of music.

1. The Beatles are no different from soft rock groups today. They started a trend sure, but it's a trend that has no originality anymore and so far it has been able to reinvent itself in today's fast changing world. This is a must in rock music. You either go with the flow or you'll be flushed down the toilet forever.

2.Why don't the Beatles have any famous live albums? Performing live tells you a lot about a band. It tells you if they can actually play as well as on the albums, if they can improvise, and if they have any energy being produced during the concert. The only live performance anyone ever hears about is their first performance in America on the Ed Sullivan Show. You don't hear about any sort of legendary performance they might have had somewhere. For instance you don't hear about anything as famous when Hendrix did all those crazy solos and how he burned his guitar at the end of the Monterey Pop festival in I think it was 67'. You want to know who's performance has been known as the one of the best ever live performances? S&M, Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony, has been on several lists of great live performances. But where are the almighty Beatles on these lists?

3.The Beatles could not make one single good riff. For those of you who don't know what that is that is the repeating rhythm in the songs you hear if you can listen past the lyrics that is. Trust me, I'm a guitarist and most of their music is repetitive when you are talking beyond the lyrics. So in lamen's terms, they had no talent and definitely no rhythm. On the lyrics, just about anyone with a brain in their head can write good lyrics. Lyrics can come from anyone and anywhere, and there is least one other person out there that might like them. But the lyrics aren't the key to writing a good song. And all of this stuff about their lyrics meaning so much please tell me what great moral that songs like 'Help' and 'Hey Jude' supposed to mean if it means so much?

4.So what if Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the greatest album ever in some magazine. A lot of albums become overhyped. A lot of time it's the producers that make the music sound so good. Also a band like the Beatles

have all the time in the world to make an album sound good. So what I heard that Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrissette was written in something like 4 hours or maybe more and look at how good that album is. Another example, Jimi Hendrix had no time to produce Are You Experienced. He had only enough money to rent a studio for an hour to record and mix one or two songs. Now look at that album, to me that is the album that changed rock and roll forever. Now who wants to argue with me about that little fact?

5.One reason everyone thinks they were so great is because of radio monopolies. It seems like back then the radio played nothing but the Beatles. This affects what many people listen to and what people like. I'd to break it to you but nor everyone thinks the Beatles are that good. I only know a handful of people that like the Beatles. And guess what some people who is music in a greater way agree on my view.

6. Why aren't any of the Beatles known as the greatest guitarist, vocalist, bassist, or drummer ever? I know why because they sucked. I can go on all day about better everythings but there isn't enough room on this article. Sure George Harrison was on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists ever list as #21 but look who is in front of him. Chuck Berry, Jimmy Page, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jack White of the White Stripes(how embarassing!!!), Kirk Hammett(Metallica lead guitarist and #11), and ultimately Jimi Hendrix at #1. So what does that tell you?

7. They were obviously not good people. What kind of a person has the nerve to say that they're more popular than our almighty God? This basically show their entire point of view on religion in general! Now I'll ask again, what does that tell you?

8. Hendrix and the Beatles weren't that different in terms of rock and roll muscicians. They played during the same time, they both played rock and roll. Why isn't Hendrix known as the biggest pioneer in rock and roll above the Beatles. He was a more talented musician than all the Beatles combined.

9. Why didn't the Beatles play at any music festivals like Woodstock or Monterey Pop? Could they not handle the pressure or did their popularity brainwash them into thinking that they were too good to play with more down-to-earth talented musicians?

10. None of their songs has been regarded as one of the greatest ever? Since when have you heard anyone compare a Beatles song to say Stairway to Heaven. To be honest with you I'd love to know about anything like this.

11. Absolutely no solos have a major part of their music. Solos are part of all music including soft rock. But where are they? I haven't heard all of their music so maybe they do have solos, but how come no one praises these solos if there are any?

I'm not anti-Beatles. I have respect for other opinions and taste of music, but I don't have respect for people who don't respect other people's opinions the same way as I would their's. Sure I'll give them credit for what they've done. Even Ozzy Osbourne was inspired by the Beatles to do rock and roll. So they're definitely an influential rock group. But as you can see I've just proved that they're not as great as they seem. My brother actually wrote this for his journalism class and has many great points.

Every single one of your arguements was about how they don't play great guitar, you could have summed all 11 of your points into 1 or 2. I don't think I have ever heard anyone state that the beatles were the greatest guitar players, and plus obviously a lot of people like there simple guitar style. You obviously look for how techniqual the music that you listen to, thats cool, ***but with everysingle one of your post, with the exception of the radio monopoly, you have not pointed out anything to make them decline from being a great band, you just pointed out that they are not able to play their instruments as well as the next guy.***

sry i just like arguing alot and my brother just happened to have written that for the school site so i just posted it up

What does music of today have to do with beatles?

2.Why don't the Beatles have any famous live albums? Performing live tells you a lot about a band. WHat about their BBC Sessions? I've heard a ton of live versions of sgt. peppers lonely heart club band. they can play live.

And all of this stuff about their lyrics meaning so much please tell me what great moral that songs like 'Help' and 'Hey Jude' supposed to mean if it means so much?

You're looking at most of the early stuff, in which case i would agree with you. Look at their later stuff. tell me the white album isn't complex.

4.So what if Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is the greatest album ever in some magazine. A lot of albums become overhyped. A lot of time it's the producers that make the music sound so good. Also a band like the Beatles

have all the time in the world to make an album sound good. Now look at that album, to me that is the album that changed rock and roll forever. Now who wants to argue with me about that little fact?

The beatles were putting out 2-3 albums per year. now, people put out an album a year at most. and they recorded their stuff on an 8 track. we know usually use a 64 track.

So your friends dont like beatles either. wow. whats that have to do with their talent? why did so many people buy their albums?

McCartney was an amazing bassist. His bass lines and turnarounds were amazing, and he did it while singing. Don't get me started on Rolling Stones list. They have about as much credibility now on the best guitarist list as Cosmo does.

7. They were obviously not good people. What kind of a person has the nerve to say that they're more popular than our almighty God? This basically show their entire point of view on religion in general! Now I'll ask again, what does that tell you?

What does religious beliefs have to do with anything? And they said it seemed like they were more popular than jesus, not better. Look at what Lennon tried to accomplish and tell me he was a bad person.

8. Hendrix and the Beatles weren't that different in terms of rock and roll muscicians. They played during the same time, they both played rock and roll. Why isn't Hendrix known as the biggest pioneer in rock and roll above the Beatles. He was a more talented musician than all the Beatles combined.

The beatles came to America in 64. they were the first band do be playing this type of music in america. thye were followed soon by rolling stones. in 66-67, hendrix hit it big, after many more bands had came before him.

9. Why didn't the Beatles play at any music festivals like Woodstock or Monterey Pop? Could they not handle the pressure or did their popularity brainwash them into thinking that they were too good to play with more down-to-earth talented musicians?

They were almost broken up. they couldnt stand eachother anymore. they could barely stand to record together, let alone play more concerts than was on their tour.

10. None of their songs has been regarded as one of the greatest ever? Since when have you heard anyone compare a Beatles song to say Stairway to Heaven. To be honest with you I'd love to know about anything like this.

It's all in the opinion of the person. sure, they arent as complicated as zeppelins songs. you have to look at what was before them. horrible pop music and blues. look at what they created from it. Zeppelin had many more influences. THe beatles in my opinion are more amazing as a whole. THeir whole image, attitude, music styles, message. not for particular songs. BUt check out 'the long and winding road', actually any of their later albums.

11. Absolutely no solos have a major part of their music. Solos are part of all music including soft rock. But where are they? I haven't heard all of their music so maybe they do have solos, but how come no one praises these solos if there are any?

I actually hate when solos are just thrown into the song where they just show off guitar skills. The beatles put in small solos that fit into the song that were tasteful. this is even harder to do than just improvising some super fast licks, it takes time to come up with a well-planned solo that doesnt stick out in the song.

The main reason the Beatle's quit playing live was because they couldn't hear themselves, over the screaming fans, and therefore their live performances went to shit, as it made no difference when a wrong note was played.

Watch the Beatle's anthology. I'm no big Beatles fan, by any means, but inorder to have any sort of valid argument, you have to see things from both sides. It's an interesting documentary!

As far as the Beatles being regarded as highly as they are.... I think they totally deserve it! I don't think they create the best music in the world, but that is a subjective argument. They were definetly a huge influence, and still are.
