My beef with Arc'teryx is they explicitly DON"T offer pro deal to raft guides. Guess they don't want their logo on river runners.

massive untapped clientele in raft guides

This company that’s been around for quite awhile just became popular among trust fund kids so time to hate on it

It’s better than the people that wear actual supreme, gucci, LV, etc on the hill. I see tourists all the time in that stuff and it’s cringe or for awhile a few people would wear that weird pink supreme pants while skiing. That’s where crossing the line is, but normal skiers, dads, and regular run of the mill outdoorsy people wear arc teryx. Is the price high. Yeah. But touch a jacket, pant, or anything from them and you’ll know why.

Yeah I agree

i know this thread is a year old, but...

-its kind of sick that gorp becoming a fashion thing. i can finally be fashionable!

-i dont really get the hype tho. while goretex pro is nice, i dont love arcteryx cuffs and shapes. i wouldnt trade my futurelight for anything else on the market rn.

-sucks that demand is driving up prices and lowering quality (even though arcteryx says they would never do that). my mid layer from 10 years ago is in better shape then one from last year even though its practically the same model and has 100x the usage. Patagonia suffered from the same thing. once the techbros started rocking the vests the quality of the knit products has gone down. they pretty much stopped making heavy cotton sweaters entirely

For real. My Helly Tech Pro shell made sense in the sierras. Doesn’t really make sense in the Rockies. I don’t need 20k here

come hang out in the sierras or cascades and you'll think differently.

you guys realize all companies use the same 2/3 materials to make their jackets right? acrteryx isnt doing anything different than columbia, so the whole "its just better quality and design" is just being a dumb dumb for marketing. sure their stuff might look cooler in some peoples eyes, but its functionally no different than any other polyster/goretex jacket.

also i cant be the only person that thinks their shit is just plain ugly right? the fit of their pants is way too tight, everything they make is so heavily branded, and the fit on most of their shells is just too granola and balloonish. its like some shit a street fighter character would wear

i will admit they have some dope colorways on shells sometimes tho but that does not jusitfy the ridiculous price tag.

Are you thinking of a different brand? Arc'teryx has some of the more minimal branding out there. Like 99% of their stuff just has the dino bone on the shoulder or leg. Nothing really crazy at all.

Also yes anything goretex is goretex. The fabric is leased from goretex so any company using it is going to be using the same fabric. What your paying for is higher quality features, fitting, stitching, zippers and most importantly warranty and free repairs (in the case of Patagonia). Which doesn't sound like a lot, but can lead to years longer lifespan.

I'm very glad I got my Arcteryx stuff when I did... The pro-deals they used to hand out were pretty solid, really.

Arcteryx does some things other companies dont entirely do though... They have a line that covers just about anything you could imagine outdoors... Climbing everest? Theres a shell for that. Backcountry skiing? Theres a shell for that. Trail running in the rain? there's a shell for that. They do a good job of matching face fabrics and cuts to different uses and it's pretty nice having what I have. Sometimes they dont fit everyone, I'll definitely give it that... Their womens gear often is boxy, not very flattering, and difficult to sell to the more fashion conscious types, but they still have crazy high quality gear.

My jacket is specifically made for backcountry skiing. The cut is a little longer in the back, the face fabric is a little lighter, and it packs down super small. Still has a powder skirt, and they removed the shoulder pass pocket.

I have had other stuff from other companies that comes off as a bit more 'general use' and doesn't quite hit the mark as well as my arcteryx piece. My Black Diamond Helio shell is indicative of this - marketed at both the climbing and the backcountry skiing crowds, but really doesnt do as well for backcountry skiing. I use it more as a rain shell if I'm hiking in the offseason rather than the winter.

yeah the branding isnt too bad now that i think about it, i think i just hate the logo cuz its like a status symbol at this point

still think other brands do better stitching, fit, quality etc for a fraction of the price. free repairs is cool tho

Fit is personal. But what brands have better quality and stitching? Genuinely curious

yeah fit is different for everyone fs, can agree

marmot, patagonia, flylow, mountain hardwear, HH all on par with arcteryx in terms of quality, just not as trendy with the trustfunders/hype kids and lack tik tok brand presence. all significantly cheaper too, and imo better looking, less flashy.

Honestly, as long as you dont buy any of the fast fashion Montec fast fashion literal trashbag gear, youre doing just fine...

Those are all great brands. Love my patagucci powslayer. My flylow pants are great as well, I just wish that flylow would use goretex. I have a problem of not thinking of marmot and MH for anything outside climbing lol.

I’ve had less good luck with marmot out of those; a tent bent a pole with one use and the panels weren’t sized well. Also had a jacket that seemed sub-par. Mountain hardware is great though in my experience. I have 2 sleeping bags and two jackets that have held up well, and lots of climbers wear it outside. A Patagonia jacket I have made it through multiple climbing seasons with only one hole.
