The arc boot was one of the most hilarious failures of an overpriced piece of outdoor gear.

I was talking about hiking and mountaineering boots.... but hey lets talk about the ski boot.

the procline didnt sell well. guys at shops would literally discourage people from buying it lol. i picked up a pair in 2019 5 years after their release at monods in banff for $250. so overpriced omg

its ultra low volume and the integrated gaiter and over molded rubber made it really really hard to do any boot work on it. heat it up a little too much that shit comes right off. no opening to get a grinder in either. so you needed a pretty particular foot shape for it to be feasible. same goes for the backland and xalp carbon boots.

was it overpriced??? compared to other carbon skimo boots, not really. the race guys that could dish out 2k on a boot would not have picked it anyways. its a mountaineering boot that can lock up and ski. not a huge market for that.

was it a good boot??? i have owned it. i never really felt comfortable in em so i sold em. i have roughly 30km and 2000m vert over three days. the walk mode locking mechanism is seriously superior to anything on the market even now. it released the boot on two pivoting axis. literally felt like a shoe going up. transitions were quick. you didnt really have to unbucke the top or take off the power strap to get good range of motion. you could transition without having to pull up your pants or take off your gloves. the downhill was the only place it was lacking. you couldnt drive big skis with it and you couldnt exactly ski hard in them. just too soft. for hop turns or following a singletrack down and out of a forrest, they were fine.

tldr; im bored at work

That answers a couple questions for me! Thank. I always wanted a pair for mix mountaineer boot, but was too expensive to take a chance on. Arent they now discontinued?

PSA: Old Northface Goretex jackets in near perfect shape are available on Ebay and Marketplace for less than $100. Gore Tex basically never degrades and is super tough, also the formula's used in those old jackets are illegal to produce now and are even more robust than the shit you buy today

I have a Mammut gore tex 3l shell that is def not as waterproof as it was new. Half hour standing in the rain and I'm soaked. New I could ski all day in the rain and stay dry. Still a great shell but it's basically a windbreaker now.

I would definitely pick one up or something similar if I still lived in the PNW. They seem unnecessary for the rockies cause it’s just not wet enough.

Bold marketing strategy by OP (and some others in the thread) to only market high-end stuff to people who actually need it. They’d make so little selling it to mountaineers and the few people who rip gnarly backcountry lines that they have to market it to the rich punters who don’t dare to go anywhere near the ski area boundary. The average skier who sucks ass is how companies in the ski industry make money- not off park bros, not off crusty hardos who rip and rock their old gear till it’s in pieces. Such a tough concept for BS to comprehend

im just mad cause I can’t afford it :/

yea, but they can still be found kicking around in odd places.

Most recently i saw a pair 27.0 at switching gear in canmore. new with tags going for $400. i really would not recomend getting these online unless you have a really narrow foot or youve tried them out in person.

Yes, Arcteryx is expensive but the gear is quality. Honestly, for as expensive as it is, most of their gear is fairly understated at least visually. I had a pair of Arcteryx bibs that lasted me 8 seasons and when I finally tore the boot snow cuff out of one leg I sent them in for repair and they repaired them free of charge, I bought the pants 60% 8 years ago, think about how wild that is from a business's perspective. I also have a mid layer that is gram per gram the warmest piece of clothing I own. It's cut nice and highly functional, after a year of use I would gladly shell out the cash again.

Also, if a retail store makes you uncomfortable, that is a you problem how can you blame a store for that, its a fucking store not your ex girlfriend. Lighten up.

I remember Arc’teryx used to represent high level skiers, yea you would always have the beginner who had the money to blow 900 on a jacket for a weekend of skiing but other than that you would assume anyone who had it was a very good skier who got the full use out of the jacket. Arc’teryx still try to keep that professional view on their products but all I can think of now when I think or arc is those TikTok kids who post them hiking in their local woods head to toe in Arc’teryx and those gorpcore fucks who I despise with every bone in my body. It’s turned into a streetwear brand

Typical NSer's take on Arc'teryx lol

I have the same opinion as the OP but tbh I think deep down we are all just trying to be different because Arc’teryx genuinely is a good brand for those who need it

the one time I went into an arcteryx store the dude working immediately pointed me to the sale rack. Didn't make me uncomfortable but apparently I clearly am not their target market.

No, just used it a ton. Rinsed it a few times and air dried but never run through the wash.

there’s your answer, gotta take care of your gear. shell clothes need to be washed and the water repellant needs to be re-applied and/or re-activated.

there are detergents made specially for shell materials and there are some with the wash and repel combined. i just washed my gore tex pro jacket that had some heavy use and was letting water through, came out better than i expected

In my experience expensive outerwear is usually worth it, never bought any but have had nice shit passed down so idk. If you spend $900 on a jacket and get 4 decades out of it I would definitely consider that value, though idk how much better arc is than helly or descente or something

What if there were really good sales and they just marked down a bunch of shit? Maybe that's what everyone else asks so they just always point it out.

You are hung up in what you think is true when you have no idea of actually knowing unless you asked.

I mean I'm not hung up on shit, just thought it was funny.

There were 3 jackets on the sale rack. I just went in to check the store out. Had zero interest in buying anything, I have no need for anything near as technical as what they sell.

I've owned most of the brands and all my Arcteryx shit performs superior to almost all the rest. When I break down the price versus how many seasons I'm able to abuse the gear, it's literally cheaper in the long run.

Classic newschoolers, tear down anyone that gets successful. This place is a bucket of crabs. Be happy more money is being spent on the outdoor industry ya fakks

The general Newschoolers member / average skier in general doesn’t understand the concept that you can wear the same shit year after year. Quality stuff lasts longer. A $900 jack that lasts years is a better investment than your disposable [insert trendy brand] $200 junk that lasts half a season.

overall, consumerism bad. Stop buying shit you don’t need. If you ski once a season, you don’t need Arcteryx.

It's like a wave just hit ON Facebook buysell this week. I like the concept of the two-tone, something different, but ya not the post vibe. Not very 'adventure gear'.
