Appreciation post for old lifts - Inspired by @cydwhit

Today I read Cy's article urging more people to post about how skiing makes them feel. The internet is a wild and at times shitty place to post things, but I think there's always room to talk about chairlifts. My current home mountain is Mt. Bachelor, and my home lift on said home mountain is Red Chair. It's the only original lift still used on the mountain; an old fixed-grip triple with each chair covered in a firetruck-red paint, now mostly chipped and covered in stickers. All of the terrain can be accessed by the new detachable, high-speed quad a hundred or so yards away, but there's something special about riding the slow, older lift. Red Chair is similar to Alta's Wildcat lift in that a lot of the main hits can be seen from the lift, so heckling is a big part of the lift ride.

I would love to hear about other favorite chairs that are still being used at other resorts, and maybe claim your best heckle ever from said chair.

The old red 4 person gondola at gore. Been gone for a while now but they had a mid station to switch cable. Lifties locked the door and unlocked the door at the top. Cool driving through ny still and seeing the occasional random in front of a ski shop or something. Another era.

I think i was like 12 when they replaced it. But there's something sad about the departure of the old lifts sometimes.

I guess the speed of the new lifts is pretty dope, im not saying everything should be the sketchiest old lift around, but there's a sort of nostalgic quality you miss sometimes when they're gone. Like the passing of time. None of this, or even us are here forever.

Isn’t there still some old towers up and the stations?

Mid station and top station are still there, or at least were as of a few years ago. Still towers. The base station was converted in with an addition to become a lodge of sorts mostly for the ski school lessons and maybe rentals.

It's weird because you get off on of the lifts nearby the top station and have to ski around it. But was always cool remembering it was there.

Whitewater’s Silverking chair is Whistler’s old double chair is still spinning. Its that super old double chair without a safety bar. Summit’s double was replaced a couple years ago.

I think Killington has a single lift with a lever to attach the lift to the cable. Thats some oldschool design right there

sundance rays lift is getting retired this year, has been up since the 90s super slow ride but has provided for some super chill times with the homies

I've still never been able to ride the Single Chair at Mad River Glen. I've always wanted to but it was difficult to get time off in the winter when I was on the east coast.

is chhair 4 at Silver Mountain, Idaho still that super old double? By far the oldest chair I have personally been on and one of the few chairlifts that got me spooked.

The Sugarloaf gondola was before my time, but from what I hear it was sick. Theres plenty of cars around the valley too, they got a few at a local bar that you can sit and drink in. I always wanted them to build another one since the mid station was up for too long, but I hear its too windy to have it run enough for it to make sense. Still, would be cool to have the retro experience

Mountain cheif at copper, challenger at Boyne highlands. Both slow 3 seaters but the chair heckling is on point

All the center post quads at the boyne hills are super cool. Any chair with center posts are awesome.

slow lift rides are prime for eating, drinking a beer or chiefing

Fr bro. Then you don’t have to deal with the bars on the outside too
