It’s new MacBook Pros next Thursday February 24, according to MacRumors, citing a “reliable” source.

We’ve since heard reliable confirmation that this information is accurate and that the expected release date is next Thursday, February 24th. The move would be a bit unusual for Apple to launch new machines on a Thursday. So, if you are about to buy a new MacBook Pro, wait until next week.

MacBooks were last updated a year ago with Intel Core i5 and i7 chips. The new machines are likely to get Intel’s latest Sandy Bridge processors, which are faster and a lot less power hungry. Rumors that the machines will have cases made of Liquidmetal are unlikely, but they will probably will be lighter, thinner and have higher-resolution screens. A big price drop is predicted too.

Apple’s said to be releasing five new models, which will include two new 13-inch versions, two new 15-inch versions and one new 17-inch version.

Continued from separate article:

Since Liquidmetal is both stronger and lighter than aluminum, a Liquidmetal MacBook Pro could be up to 20% lighter than current models. That means the 13-inch Pro will weigh only 3.7 pounds (down from 4.5),while the 15-inch will slim down to 4.6 pounds (from 5.8) and the 17-inch to 5.3 pounds (from 6.6).

Additionally, the report says that Apple has managed to improve battery life by up to 20% over current models, while simultaneously lowering power consumption thanks to a new type of display. Combined, this might drastically increase the already impressive battery life of the MacBook Pro line.

Hardware-wise, all MacBook Pros will be updated to Intel’s Sandy Bridge architecture, which we’ve heard before. All around, the new Pros will receive the higher-res, build-to-order displays of the current models as stock, bumping the 13-inch Pro to a base res of 1440 x 900 in both glossy and matte finish.

Intriguingly, though, the 15- and 17-inch models are said to be gaining a modular bay for the optical drive, which will allow it to be easily swapped with a secondary hard drive or other SATA device. Although MacTrast doesn’t specifically say so, this strongly implies ubiquitous SSDs to me, with users allowed to swap out an optical drive or larger external hard drive as needed.

Finally, MacTrast’s sources say the prices of the new MacBook Pros will be more aggressive than ever, with the 13-inch MacBook Pro starting at $1099, the 15-inch costing $1549 and the 17-inch starting at $2099.

well fuck me. prices are sick, increased battery life, like it didnt already last long enough, all murdered out and lighter.... shiiiit

nice giving my 13 inch to my brother for when he goes to marine corp and Im picking up a 15 for school

If this is true, I'm absolutely thrilled!
I've been waiting since September for the new release. I kinda dropped my 4 year old macbook pro 5 feet onto the corner of a cement stair... took out the screen but only the screen.
So I've been doing things ghetto style and have my macbook hooked up to an external... it's worked, but I really really want the new one. I shall be getting it. I'm excited. But I probably have to wait till mid march. Vacation comes first.
Such happy news.

i still have the first unibody macbook and i really want something with better battery life. my battery lasts well under 2 hours

First unibody? I was under the impression there was only one unibody mac, the current model.

stoked! I just got into my dream school (U of I) last night and i told my parent that i was gonna sell my 13 inch and buy a new 15 inch when they released the next gen pros so this is awesome news! Plus they told me they'd pay the difference since i got in(which is epic cause i had to pay for my 13)

i wish i could afford to buy the newest shit every year

meanwhile, my $700 desktop is still up and kicking..

Hey, I had my old Dell until it literally wouldn't turn on anymore. That thing was so old it was basically assembled by cavemen.

shut up ya rich bitch

why dont you take your lexus from your million dollar mansion to your yacht and sail it to your caribbean summer home

or something

mmm. I have no idea what you're talking about. My job definitely doesn't pay me enough to afford million dollar houses and such, but perhaps I should ask for a raise.

I wonder how much of a price drop they are talking about. My Hp is dying pretty quick now, and have been thinking about a Macbook. The price drop of the new ones should flood the used market and make it easy to get a previous model for really cheap.

I'm all about my silver/black macbook pro. Illuminated keyboard is soo $. Have zero need for the newest model and won't for years.

thats for the cheap one, if you get the faster processor and some basic software like Microsoft office then its ends up at around 3000 realistically with tax and such.

they have amazing battery life i get 8 hours, on my HP i get 8 hours of battery life with an extended battery (8 cell), but with my macbook i dont have to have a annoying battery poking out. much cleaner OS takes at the most 20 seconds to restart my Mac, and just turning on the computer is about 10. if you have spaces enabled then you will love that, just go to one corner of your LCD and you have 4 little spaces pop up and you can have multiple things in each tile, and so if you have word in one tile, you can have a torrent going in the other, and it wont get in the way of you working, but if you want to check up on how its going, you just go to spaces and look. if you install a program they contains a virus, it will stay in that folder, (as long as it does have coding to go somewhere else), unlike windows that when you install something, it clogs up your registry, and all that other shit. the camera is amazing. the movie editing is great. garageband....the love of my life. its an amazing easy to use audio editor, i am currently torrenting the jam pack remix tools so i can get more out of garageband and the mixing i do. now onto the hardware, they have amazing specks, but my mac makes no noise when im running the CPU at full power, the fan pretty much cannot be blocked by your leg or if you set it down on your bed and leave it there for a few hours it can still get air. unlike PC's where they fan sucktion is at the bottom. the light up keyboard is great, its only for macbook pros, but i bought a light up thing to put under my keyboard for 25 dollars on ebay, and i installed it my self onto my macbook and it works great. having a CD drive that does not pop out and in, instead you just slide your CD into it, is great, not as much hassle. hmmmm what else, all the programs that come with the mac are great. and if you think im a "mac enthusiast" im not, i have hated macs all my life, till my sister died around thanksgiving, and i got to have her mac, and i have loved all the cool features and all the great stuff about it.

there was a unibody regular macbook briefly released before everything turned into the macbook pro. mine's the same processing speed and ram as a 13" mbp but it doesn't have the built in battery, sd slot, or firewire port

it's a dumb computer but my old one broke so i needed to get something quickly

i hope you get banned for posting scat porn you weird fuck.

If it wasn't such an enormous ripoff it'd be cool. I mean really for $1000 i could get such a nice laptop, i7 quad-core, 4gb of ddr3 ram, an actual dedicated video card with 1 gb of ddr3 memory, hd screen. And then i could just triple boot it and have a kickass mac whenever i wanted

honestly the main reason i plan to get a MBP for college is because of the trackpad.
does anyone know of another laptop with a trackpad that actually works well enough to just use that instead of a mouse?

you dont need the MBP for the trackpad. im sure the normal macbook has one. and when this one coems out u can buy an aluminum one off ebay or kijiji or whatever for so cheap. everyone will sell theirs to "upgrade" to the new black one.
save your money.
