This isn't to put anyone down, I was just reading and article on iPods and my friend's iPod issue that got me thinking. iPods are so popular and demanded that many companies are designing luggage and apparel and outerwear with an 'iPod' pocket/holder, not mp3 or music, they will actually state iPod. Some BMW's with stock iPod docks to connect them to the stereo.

And the big thing, the iPod is just like cell phones in it's progression. Phone's, the big think was that they kept getting smaller and smaller, then there was internal antennas, small flip phoes, color screens, internet access cameras, etc. Where are iPod's? the exact same path but not as far along. They're process is they keep coming out with more tweaks, first more space, a backlight, sesored buttons, sensor/click wheel, mini, iPod photo. But they still haven't come out with an iPod with a color screen other than the photo, the current mini only holds 4 gigs i believe, and such.

what my friend did was bought the new click wheel, then 2 weeks later the photo came out so he really wanted the photo so he sold his old ipod to a friend and got the photo. meaning, iPod buyers are also looking to get the better, newer iPod because of such luck with their old ones.

This is just a post to kinda look at things differently, I'm in a marketing class and it just made me think of the cycle of these, I want an iPod so bad, but I think I'll have to wait on the one that comes out that I really want.

its all about the look of them. if they were diff color, size, shape, none of this ipod pnunonmana(wowsp?) would have happend. Apple is a genious for the fact that they make ther shit white. white appeals.

Ipod really are the best in all fairness. design, size, ease of use, anly thing that other players have over them is battery life, vut serously, how long are you gonna listen to muc for before you get home to charge it anyways? I will admit that the ipod mini is a total peice of shit though. for $50 you can get a player from motorolla that has an extra gig and uses cell phone batteries that last like 20 hours (compaired ot eh the mini's 8). or for the same price, you can get a Rio Carbon that has one more gig and is alot smaller.

Sony NW-HD1! Same size as Ipod mini 30 hour battery life, 20 gigs, and uses Atrac3plus, meaning 64kbs is equal to 128kbs in MP3. You cannot beat it, however it costs $100 more. It is so undoubtedly worth it, though. I listen to it 3-4 hours a day (whenever I'm on NS at school, walking home, subway, sitting) and I havent charged yet this week. It has less features than an ipod, but if you want the smallest and most practical player, this is head and shoulders over Apple.

I hate to reply to another of these threads. but I feel the need to. Yes, Apple has a fantastic marketing strategy. Why? Because the iPod is nothing special at all, but it still sells a hell of a lot.

By far the best player available today is iRiver's H340. Smaller but thicker than the iPod, one of the few HD players that works as an external hard drive (ie. no drivers/software required), and it works as a USB host so you can transfer photos straight from a compatible camera, which will save me a fortune in memory. I'm hopefully getting one in January if I can return my Zen.

 
just to let you know, the ipods do that too.

i pods are so sucessfull becasue they are just cooler than everything else. they looks sweet (very unique design), have all sorts of accessories, sound great, have games, and are just fun to use.

lol, that is some funny shit. honestly all i care about in terms of dimensions is thickness. that is what makes it so easy to jsut throw in your pocket and go. i dont care if it is a little bit taller or maybe a little bit wider. The Rio Karma, is a great ipod competitor, with much longer battery life and an easy to use interface, but i would never buy it becuase even though it has a smaller 'footprint' then the ipod it is freekin thick.

Apples own. Leading in graphics design, everything is quicktime based, macs are much more efficient, robust systems. Just they're not popular because the average person can't afford one.

And dont use 'Oh well all the games and programs are available for PCs' as a legit criticism, because PCs only have the shit available BECAUSE so many people own em.

the worst thing about iPods is their durability. they scratch soo easily and are known to crack. also, they have many glitches and bugs wich should not be there, such as not displaying anything on the screen but still playing music.

 
Yeah dude I just graduated today from my commerce degree (it was 35 degrees celsius so sitting inside with my suit and stupid mortar board on was a little shit) anyway I majored in marketing and your right the iPod is all about the marketing. I mean if you look at it its not necessarily that much different to a lot of what is already on the market. They have just really done well targeting the popular youth, once those 'innovators' adopt the product then its sales were always going to sky rocket. For example they made up specific strategies for Uni O'weeks (ie the big piss up week at the start of the year) at the start of last year.

The big thing I'm saying is that the iPod, just like the cell phone, got so popular that they companies had all the technology to make a smaller phone, color screen this and that many years a go obviously, but if the public is buying their big phone no color scree, reg ipod no color screen, smaller space, why make something better that will cost you a little more to make?

I think the iPod is the best and most accepted in action sports because of the size and the durability, I was at best buy and wow look at the dif. ones, its a little bigger than some, but look at the movie parts! Before the click wheel, all you had was touch sensors, so if u lock the buttons (the hold switch) then basically nothing can break a any flimsy switches or this and that. No Moving Parts, that's what any action sports athlete wants when he's riding, nothing to poke him in his pocket if he bails, and no lil pastic to snap off from movement or falling.

My friend has one and had it in his pocket and the screen got damaged (he doesn't know how so it obviously didn't take any huge knock). Took it to the place where he bought they said they would fix it but then the service department said they wouldn't, all this after Apple promised him after he asked them several times whether he would be covered for these types of things. The problem is its so expensive to fix because its all one unit and hard to take apart, eg if you ger a flat battery then you basically got to replace it apparently.
