I was JUST about to put down the latest issue of Frreze Magazine when something caught my eye. The very last paragraph on the last page says that AOL/Time Warner bought them!! Am I the only one that thinks that's completely insane? I don't know why I think it's insane, but yeah.. wow.

Matt

meh. it's not like they don't own everything already.

thats crazy....i though freeze was owned by transworld.....i wonder if aol just bought freeze or all of transworld. i don't know how good it is that freeze will be all over aol though. Thats just my opinion, but i think its gonna bring too much attention to it. Before you know it Pros could be on those dumb ass iced tea commercials that danny kass and them sold out too. whatever

yeah they would have bought transworld not just freeze, should still be the same people running the show...

I don't see how people can really knock on selling out if they're still doing what they love, if someone came up to you and told you they were gonna pay you buttloads of cash and all you had to do was look like a mainstream goober for 15 seconds, you'd do it too.

i wouldn't call freeze being bought by AOL selling out.............maybe it's jsut that they needed a bigger corporate backing. amaybe they needed more cash to improve shit like someone mentioned above. now if, in three months, things change and it's fucking gay...............then i'll call them sell outs.

AOL time warner is one the 5 major media companies in america. Theses five own almost all the media around the country....

I can't see how the content can get much worse... I really can't see this hurting the magazine... maybe some more money will alow them to hire some people to actually put some content into the magazine... like dont get me wrong - I give them mad props for puting out a magazine and stuff and they do have amazing pictures - but seriously - the content is totally lacking. I can read a freeze in like 30 minutes... and I read really slow... pick up any snowboarding mag and you will see what I mean. so yea... I can only see this as being a good thing for freeze.... to get some extra money in to hire some more writers. yea.

me: 'why did you just block her?'

Darryl: 'I was insulted cuz she couldn't picture me screwing a little boy.'

Agreed. Powder kicks ass almost more than Freeskier.

yeah, powder is getting quite nasty with the newschool coverage. Their articles are usually pretty witty and well written as well. Freeze makes my brain hurt... It's written for the lowest common factor, a.k.a. teenagers.

Wasnt Freeze right from the start owned or operated by Times Mirror, along with all Transworld and other magazines. And Times Mirror was, im guessing here but it only makes sense, a part of Times Warner. And Aol and Times Warner merged so to me it makes sense that they are now right under Aol.

that's clasic andy

ya sims is right. Freeze is in house with Transworld which is owned by Time Warner which was bought out by AOL. So really this is nothing new at all, yet again another reason to read freeskier though.

word Gravteck... people are just too greedy. the funniest of all this however is skateboarding. Its an entire anti-corporate sport run by huge corpoarations. All skateboarders are 'sell-out posers' to huge corporations such as DC Shoe and ES who try to sell them selves as people who are 'True To The Sport'. And DOnt think it wont happen to skiing. Its already started, just not to the same scale. As soon as enormous corporations (such as AOL TIMEWarner) see the huge market of rich litler skier kids (like you and I... we are rich compared to most people), then are sport will be ruled by corporatations. Its nothing to get mad about... infact quite the contrary. Big Corporations bring lots of money and advancement. So whether you like it or not, selling out to commercials is inevitable. Anyone who is offered upwards of $10,000 to 'act like a poser' for 15 seconds, will inevitably 'sell-out'.

transworld has freeze? why isn't it like 'transworld skiing ' or 'transword freeze' then?

I agree with you, but you make it sound like DC and ES shoes AREN'T really 'true to the sport' and that they are just suckering in lots of little kids for their own financial benifit.

I think that is totaly not the case, skateboarding has gone through ridiculous growth over the last few years, and for the most part, I would say that these companies are still very much true to the sport, INFACT they can be even more true to the sport, pay their athletes better, make better product so that all the kids can better enjoy their sport etc.

Is Nike not true to all their track and field athletes because they are the huge company they are? I'd say no. They continue to produce top of the line shit for serious athletes. (lets not get into all the 3rd world labor stuff, thats a different topic for a different thread)

On another surf/skate note: Nike just purchased Hurley Int.

HOPFULLY skiing will experience the same type of growth as skateboarding, because all around it means better product, better athletes, better movies etc...

Rap n' Roll sucks.

AOL/Time Warner bought Times Mirror a couple of years ago. Times Mirror owned Ski, Skiing and Freeze. Yes, the same people that bring you 'The top 100 instructors in America' also publish Freeze. Why do Ski and Skiing want a tiny rag like Freeze, you ask? Simple, once you start to get close to the end of Freeze's age demographic, watch how many direct mail pieces and email spam you get from Skiing. Freeze is tiny and contibutes no money to AOL in comparison to Ski and Skiing. It's plain and simpy cheap marketing to the younger audiences for the larger publishing company.

Freeskier is the ONLY indy mag left. Support it.
