Anyone think freestyle skiing is spreading to fast?

Hmm, I was thinking about how a few years ago there was hardly any park skiers compared to snowboarders. Freeskiing is still not huge but its growing rapidly, and I see most of my snowboarding friends wanting to switch to skiing.

I think in a few years there wont be that many snowboarders and there will be more park skiers, I could be totally wrong though. Personally I would like to keep freeskiing where its at, I mean still progress the sport but I dont want everyone on the hill to be a park skier. So what do you guys think? Would you guys like freeskiing to be smaller or grow into hardly any snowboarders?

Please dont hate, I just wanted some opinions...

i can recall a time when I felt the same way about a sport before. It was skateboarding a year before tony hawk was in the paper and on the news doing a 900. shit blew up after that

i dont know, like ive gotta a snowboarder friend who just switched to skiing, and he doesnt seem to appreciate the sport

he says poles are stupid and that powder is boring, not sure what im tryin to say here... just seems like he still has this whole snowboard mentalety

I was just talking about this one. I understand that skiing is growing. I am a 3 year skier. I feel selfish to say that I want to keep the sweet thing we call skiing to ourselves. I think skiing might blow up soon. We'll see. I know that it wont change the fact that we're gonna have fun with friends on the hill.

I totally agree, the one thing i really dont like about it is when you see all the kids on the hill trying to be all thug and shit with all thier brand new gear, and then they just ride through the park ! to me personally it seems like its kinda of giving the sport a bad image

The sport will die if it doesn't spread. Skiing right now is kind of like snowboarding was in 1996, about to completely take off. Its crazy to see the scenes that are popping up all across the world. Its sick when you see videos like the shit papasteeze posted from Big Boulder, PA where there is a huge group of kids throwing down and whatnot, in Pennsylvania. Lets be serious, who ever would have thought PA would have had some of the best skiers out today (Stepp, Wallisch, Seany J, Brogan, I know I'm missing some others). Its dope to see the scene spread, you'll have to accept that you'll see things you hate and heaps of gapers with twin tips but that money will eventually get pumped back into contests, movies, etc... (hopefully). Its kind of an idealistic look at whats going on but I can definitely see it happening.

i agree to the extent that a lot of new skiiers wont learn how to ski properly and will just be annoying park rats their whole life... which is kinda lame in my opinion... i see too many kids who cant ski properly at all outside of the park but can slay in the park, kinda annoys me.

but i dont have a problem with the sport growing, there are too many elitist douchebags in skiing who think it should be kept to a small group or whatever... personally i think that everyone should have the opportunity to fall in love with skiing.

Are you being serious, or is this a joke? Half the skiers I see now don't have poles and shred the park exclusively.. It's not just a snowboarding trend. In fact.. I probably know more snowboarders who shred everything.

I would love it if everyone on the hill was a park skier. Think of how many more fresh lines you could get.shit would be epic

not what i ment man, i usually ditch my poles in park too

he just doesnt appreciate skiing for all it is, all he wants to do is park, which is cool, as long as you can still enjoy backcrountry

if your asking that now, your probably someone who just jumped on the freestyle skiing bandwagon too. Growth is good, newschoolers is just a giant advertisement now, but that doesn't mean there aren't cool people still surfing the site. There are just alot more lame people is all.

personally i would love to have great new technologies becuase of the higher demand for skis and sicker stuff. also you prob dont want some new kids just coming onto the hill and jockstrapping all over you

still skiing the same mountains with the same people, I dont see a lots changed except the fashion has gone kind of nuts and 10 year olds can pretzel when I can't. shit pisses me off.

i disagree, i actually would much rather see all skiers in the mountain, i much rather watch other skiers ride as well as much rather ski with other skiers. Im not sure why but skiing seems so much more styly as well as riding with other skiers helps progress my riding too.

On the other side, skiing kind of makes me feel unique, most of my friends snowboard and it kind makes me feel different, so i dont really mind things the way they are

Hmmmm... dare I say skiing is good? Hmmm, the more people know about it, the more money goes into it, the better the products are. Hmmm...

I don't think its spreading too fast. I just wish that it would spread a little faster. The kids I usually go to the mountain with are skiers but not free skiers so I'm alone in the park. Unless my other friend who's waay better than me gets off of his freestyle team so we can go shred the park.

i actually think there are way more snowboarders going in the backcountry nowdays. think about it, every snowboard part has a couple backcountry things, u almost never see a part thats exclusively park. sure there are still more oldschool skiiers heading into the backcountry, but most snowboarders ride park and bc, it seems like skiiers pick one or the other.

and as for more people, the more people spend money on this sport, the better everything can get. more parks, better movies, more comps, technology in gear will probably progress faster, i dont really see a downside

At my home mountain most of the skiers are still pretty hardcore. Theres not that many people that are posers. I usually hear snowboarders saying that they want to switch to skiing, or they hate on it and call me a fag for being a skier. I dont really know which bugs me more, I dont want a bunch of gapers becoming freeskiers cuz they'll ruin how its still kind of underground, but it also bugs me when people hate on skiing cuz its so dope. I guess its kind of a trade off....

i don't know, i would like the sport to progress, but at the same time still get the feeling when you're like one of ten people ripping down the mountain with style/buttering and jibbing stuff; that almost exclusive feeling. I think it's kinda cool to be the one of two skiers that goes on my towns' bus trips to mountains that skis park, while the others have fun on the bunny slope. At the same time, it'd be cool to have a few buddies to talk about newschool skiing and to ski with. It'd be nice to say "hey, i just learned 270 on 270 out" and not hear "you snowboard?" for once. I still like regular skiing though, i 'd say i ski more of the mountain than the park, just cause going like 70 mph down a hill is fun no matter what. i really wish i had some long backcountry line to do that on...

Is it spreading like swine flu?

Skiing is still underground. Like if you notice not very many skiers are house held names. In Utah there people that are aware of freeskiing but every where else most people only know Shawn white or what ever which is pretty sad. don't worry only a select few are catching on to freeskiing.

Im not sure if you're aware or even old enough to know....but its taken about 10-15 years to get to where we are now. So if thats fast...then uhh....sweeeeet?

At my home park it is like a 10 to 1 ratio of snowboarders to skiers, the 10 being with more snowboarders. I think it all depends on where you live.

like many people said, it is nice to have a feeling of knowing that you are one of the only freeskiers on the hill. you feel unique. I think its fine if it spreads as long as skiers just have fun. I hate going through the park, trying something new and getting put down for failing. skiers should give eachother support. I dont want the snowboarders that are like "faggot! suck my balls!" to be in our sport.

maybe at your hill...

i will say something to the increase in twin-tips though. loads of gapers at Sunshine have them, despite not using the rear tips. so odd to ask a dude on twins what he thought of simon winning x, and get a reply of "i didn't know skiing was in the x games"

Freestyle skiing is such a terrible term. I still think we should go back to hotdogging. Or veggiedogging for the non-meat eaters among us.

I think that Freestyle skiing will in one sense take off though still be fairly exclusive. Sure we might see gappers tryin to pull shit in the park but hay were all here to proggress and Improve. I think we should share this sport with other people and so we can see the bar being raised on the sport and people going bigger and better. And to answer your question, no I don't think it's spreading to fast I believe it's progressing day by day.

what skiers at mission give you shit for failing? boarders yes, skiers(me being 1 of the few) no

i like how it is now

i dont want it to turn into something like football where everyone at plays it on a team

Whenever I talk about skiing and mention that I go in the park, they always reply "Oh, so you snowbard too?" and I say no, I ski. And when I say se you later or something, they always say, "are you sure you don't snowboard?" at which point I walk away. Free skiing is big here, most of the freeskiers here go to NMU.
