well, i thought id be able to get a ski for the powder have another for teh rest of teh hill, but aparently not. i need something that will float on the powder days but will still turn and carve the rest of teh time. i was gonna get the Pistol or Viscious, but im intrigued by the Mantra.

im 5'8 145, i was thinking 169 in the K2s, 175 for the Mantra

i'm in the exact same position as you. i have some pe's but those are just gonna be for park next year. i want something i can ride absolutely everywhere. i'm going to copper and jackson this winter for sure and i want something to bust through everything. i was thinking seth vicious' before, but i heard they suck on groomed. i was starting to think of mantras, scratch bc's, and arv's instead. i need something in the mid 180 range preferably and want a waist in the 90's somewhere.

i've also heard that this is the last year to get good volkl's since they are apparently moving their production from austria or germany (i cant remember) to asia since k2 bought them.

I just bought some. I was stuck between the Vicious and the mantra, but the matra is supposed to be a little more powerfull because it is a little stiffer. I have heard that the vicious is supposed to be better on hardpack than the pistol because the tail is stiffer this year. The mantra is supposed to be great for an all mountain everyday ski that will really float. Same thing with the vicious, except it isn't quite as stiff. If you want a full twin for the park, get the vicious. If you want something that is a little harder to ski but will charge through anything, get the mantra.

oh and the mantra comes in 177, not 175. The 177 seems like a good size for you.

the Mantra is an awesome ski...I bought them last year after a day's demo

busts crud and is super stable at any speed

the only problem is the turned up tail in the back is not that high, so you can't land switch in powder like you can with either the seth vicious or Gotama

Yo tandan, go for the new BC's 98mm(new) vs. 90mm(old) at the waist and its stiffer this year. I skied last years BC's all season in Jackson and they were spot on but wider and stiffer would definitely be more fun. Thats why I've added some gotamas to my quiver this year.

I got a friend that work for Volkl .

He told me that mantra is a great ski!!!

I'm the same size as u, and i was in the same decision.

I would go for it if i had the opportunity

It's stiffer than K2 and it should work better.

I went with k2 jusyt cousei got a great deal.

Nope, the vicious is great on groomers(well for a fattie) The new sidecut kills hardpack. The pistols sucked on groomers.

i hated the mantra they were a boring ride no pop no nothing, its just a sorry excuse for a twin its not even a twin if you want a carving ski get a metron B5 cause the mantra sucks ass.

Mantra was not designed as a twin, it is designed as a freeride/powder ski. Not to mention it is one of the best skis on the market. I will agree if you are park, park, park then the Volkl Karma would be a better choice than the Mantra, but if you are seeking powder and crud the Mantra kicks ass in all of it.

As far as K2 owning Volkl that is not altogether true. K2 Corp owns Volkl and K2 along with Atlas, Tubbs, Shakespear Reels and rods, Mountain Hardwear etc..... Atomic is now owned by the same corporation as Salomon, but it does nto mean that the 2 companies have anything to do with each other. The businesses are still run seperatley and if they (Volkl and K2) were to actually run as one company you would see many anti-trust law suits being filed.

you don't want pop in a ski on the steeps, in crud or for straightlines

you want stability and that's the Mantra

(and so was it's predecessor, the Explosiv)

Mantra is a pure big mountain ski

Mine are in a 184. I know that there is a longer length than mine. I believe it is either 189 or 191.

The Mantra feels like a giant peice of clankety Fiber glass. I've skied almost every other freeride ski for '06 and the Mantra is at the bottom of my list for this year. Cop the Prophet 100 it will destroy the Mantra and just about everything else out there on or off the groom, You should probably ski the 179cm, or 186cm if you're a true expert big mountain skier and weigh over 180lbs.
