Anyone play guitar?

Hopefully I can find a place to play loudly that isn't freezing this winter. I'll have 3 days off a week, so might even just drive out of the mountains one of those days to skate and play.

Worst case ontario will probably play in my car. Would be cool if I can find a building that's not being used to play in. Will def play in my room but just gonna finger pick and sing quietly. But even then to anxious to really make much for sounds.

Idk, I just wanna play every day. Shits exciting and I'm not even good at it.

Digging the small breakthroughs though and just love every time I touch the thing and can play some songs badly. Now I know enough songs where I can rotate them a bit. It got a little annoying when I kind of knew like part of 1-3 songs and that was all I had to play. Even just playing random chord progressions and scales is fun.

Guitars are friggin dope. Prolly gonna sell my electric drum kit. I don't think I'm going to play it much anymore.

I'm doing van life this year and its been tough finding spots to play. I like to play standing up but when its warm and dry enough outside I wanna be doing outdoor stuff. Usually universities are friendly jam spots but worried about getting kicked out for covid reasons. good luck man

Any songs or artists people are jamming recently? Been getting back into some of my old Metallica jams that I used to play as a younger lad. Spending more time trying to get into some KOKOROKO and never not playing the Dead

True true. I'm wondering what I'll do living at a mountain. I'll see how the temps are. In CA it was usually at least decent if not nice a few days a week. Sometimes all week. We shall see.

Outside you'd prolly be ok. Maybe have a mask handy and say you go there if anyone asks.

I do want to get a strap for mine but still haven't.

Really was digging the feeling of going between Bm and F# or those bars in various spots. Next thing I no I was like oh shit, this works for weezer say it aint so on the 4th fret. Also the solo is really easy.

Idk. Cool figure out shit without looking it up or actually trying to play it. Well I tried to play the solo, but I mean the chords I was like oh word. Granted it's not a complicated chord progression or anything. I just like that when you fuck around with different chords, their relationships with each other and movement between them and start realizing they work for this song or that song.

In the first month I made a lot of progress. Even in the first few weeks. It kind of seemed like I slowed a bunch because I was getting less shitty by a lot, but not necessarily learning anything. But now every time I think maybe I'm stagnant I keep playing and either just get better or find new little things that hook me back in. Maybe a little more comfy with something, some new chords, a new song, some weird little lick.

Idk. It's endless. There's so much. I feel like I'm barely scratching the surface and that's the best part. I've learned a bunch, but there's so much shit to learn. So much. It's endless. and not in a bad way. I'm stoked that I can never really master it. Even if I actually got good at it, there's still more things, different things.

And even just playing the easiest song you know is just fun sometimes. Music is friggin dope.

Idk I feel like I'm going to post a lot in here about learning shitty songs, and gradually getting less shitty and generally being excited as fuck over some chunk off wood with some metal wires stuck to it.

I can't help it. I'm digging it.

Just accidentally learned that riptide song( not a big fan of it though) and freefallin.

Neither are hard songs. But was just cool to be like oh this be a song. It's crazy how much chords dictate a song. Like it's just some notes, but you play a certain progression and you instantly know what song it is and are singing along.

Really hope I can find a place to play this winter. I will absolutely sit in my god damn car and play though sometimes if that's all I got. A place where I can play loud and sing my goddamn little heart out.

Next up is John Mayer's Free Fallin', especially the intro. Not overly tricky but just sounds godly.

He's one of the best guitar player's (and musician's in general) in recent history. Fact.

Guitar is a great hobby and an even better way to waste time. I started playing roughly 2 years ago and I have taught myself most of what I know and had some help from friends that are much better players than I am. I try to play every day and I have recently been learning how to use modes but its a bit too confusing for me rn

I'm in the same boat. But I've only been playing since March but I'm trying to learn modes rn too.

I highly recommend Signals Music Studio and MusicTheoryForGuitar on youtube. It's pretty easy to get lost during the vids but I find that it helps if you just keep watching even if you get confused.

I recently moved from ultimate guitar and basically a tab/chord based approach to YouTube videos and I am trying to learn some theory. RN I really like Marty Schwartz for casual fun vids, and Eric Haugen, Paul Davids for some solid instruction vids that will definitely push an intermediate player. Trying to dabble in some flat picking and bluegrass stuff but it hasn’t really clicked yet.

Exactly, a machine haha, dude's an animal but I would much rather hear John play The Dead or blues than Tosin shred up and down the neck. I'm struggling to come up with the correct verbiage to describe how Mayer plays, but it soulful. I am also in the camp that John Mayer is probably one of the best guitarists alive, and is absolutely one of the best players of our generation.

I understand, but, shred! I would never say that I don’t like John Mayer or that he isn’t a good guitarist, but I like seeing Tosin’s bass inspired techniques and insane fingerstyle riffs. Its just so insane

Took the words out of my mouth there dude. Well said.

Just stop. What your saying is literally the equivalent of saying Andri Ragettli is the best skier in history because he can throw a quad Cork.

PROG METAL STILL GOT SOUL

Been playing again a decent amount. Have several roomates and walls are thin so mmbeen kinda chillin but gettin after it here and rhere. Had some break thoughs.

Working on my pixking for chords and getting dofferent textures. Also picming theough very scales cleanly at different speeds. Noodling around a bit and working on small little bits that could become solos or just help me when I get there.

Idk learning a bunch from this dumb piece of wood with metal strings on it. What a weird trip this hobby has been. Cant wait to see where it goes. Idk just enjoying learning and playing.

I started to get into piano as a kid with similsr feelings though wasn't really nailing chords etc but was really digging plsying and learnkng stuff just for fun. Shitty one size all piano lessons killed that lassion and made me hate it. I get that it can be helpful to people but i resented it and it made me resent the piano.

Have dove into some youtube vodeos here and there and read some stuff and its been really helpful for the most part but glad i just sat and messed around with it versus taking lessons. I dont care if i have bad habits(and am totally unaware atm anyway) i just live playing this damn thing.

I think it's really dumb to go throwing lists around in the first place because it's music. And I agree John Mayer is insane. But don't sleep on him or any of the new generation of guitarists. His use/manipulation of harmony through superimposition, or just plain interesting progressions is what makes the music cool. Not mindless shredding.

The new wave of modern guitarists are generally doing some real cool melodic and harmonic shit that is just mind melting.

Just editing to add that he also has probably singlehandedly influenced the direction of modern guitar more than almost anyone else in the 21st century, between playing style and literally making up new techniques that no one has used before.

Enough of that though, let's shoot the shit about NSers playing guitar.

Roommate plays so weve been jamming a little bit. Still pretty wonky but getting better at playing with people. Less anxious about it. We've gotten into a few decent jams.

Over the years I've realized that playing with others is exactly like having conversations with people you have different comfort levels with. And as soon as you start to not care as much it becomes much easier and you end up surprising yourself with the things you come up with. The more anxious you awe the more you hold back, at least for me. Do it more and it just becomes natural and you give less a shit trying new things. I miss playing with people :(

I'v got an old vintage 40's-50's Kay acoustic i used to play all the time, strictly picking. Put double sided tape on the pick so it would stick on my finger. Kinda jazz/blues hybrid type stuff. Always wanted to get an electric guitar but like the simplicity of acoustic

Dude this is so legit. Legendary bassman Victor Wooten has a great schpiel about thinking about music like a language just like english (or whatever), I'm not really qualified to paraphrase it but in jam situations you just gotta be comfortable making mistakes, and as long you hold down solid timing wrong notes are gonna be forgotten almost immediately. Reading it really helped my comfort levels in jamming with other folks.

In other news I don't have many musician friends close right now so I've really been missing jamming. Still try to practice and keep my chops up but its just not the same playing wth yourself :(

Just went in on a Silver Sky this fall, the payments aren't fun but man the natural reverb and playability of this thing are all I've wanted in a guitar. Been trying to find people to jam with in breckenridge if anyone is in the area!

One of of my best friends is all over summit but locked into a dope place in keystone. I swang through there a couple times a year. Was there for 3 or 4 weeks this summer remembering the brahlorahdo life and skating.

Haven't played with people much but should statt doing it more.

Played with my roommate for a couple hours today. Felt pretty comfortable and got into some nice some. I'm feeling way more comfortable picking and moving around the fret board.

It's weird though. Every time I make solid progress or have a big break through I also get humbled at the thought of how much is out there and how little I know. Not in a bad way though, it just keeps me hungry. Been a wild ride learning this thing. Still hooked. Even if I never got any better I'm still stoked, but excited to see where it leads. Guitars are pretty cool.

ive been trying to make indie music with my explorer that has EMGs and its pretty hard to get a good clean tone if at all fuck this man I need a strat

fucked with the banjo a little today. Gonna try and get rolling on that more often.

Also just fucked with goo goo dolls iris for the first time. Fucking stupid tuning, and that's why I never did it, but it does sound kinda dope. Prolly gonna learn some alternative way to play it in more standard tuning though. Fuck tuning it like this often.

Also if you don't know the song it's tuned B D D D D D. Interesting but in terms of playing normally and that not being your hit song not worth it imo.

But cool to do it once and play it. I guess ill play it a few more times because fuck tuning it back there often.

Its just the universe telling you to stop trying to bring more indie music into the world ;)

I'm currently balls deep doing a contracted heavy metal version of carol of the bells, aka carol of the hells. Its for an older progressive church, and I plan to offend their neohippie sensibilities with the sound of hi-gain chugging in drop D. Channeling the spirit of Lemmy for the holidays.

Hail Santa

Been fucking with some mellow bluegrass shit today. Been using a pick more the last couple months and starting to feel comfortable picking around. Figured getting some nice little bluegrass songs down would help.

Also been playing scaled more, but not nearly enough.

I don't really care. Still having fun playing.

Got into a couple of jams with roommate tonoght that were really good actually. Hoping for more of that shit in the future. Feel better about playing with him and people in general.
