Anyone knowledgeable with MacBook Pro's?

So my Mac has been lagging really bad when it comes to video. Netflix starts lagging really badly and so does a lot of other video when I'm watching it. I don't think the internet is an issue because it is really good reception and browsing is super fast for the most part

Also, theres a loud sound coming from the hard drive area. Sounds like the fan is super loud or something. Anyone know what this might be? I take really good care of this computer so I'm not sure what's going on.

Sounds like you might have an errant process that is draining resources from other processes like safari or flash. To see, use spotlight (or go to applications) and launch activity monitor. Click on CPU and sort the list. If anything is over like 80% it's probably sucking too many resources by mistake, you can do a control-click and kill the process.

You can sort by memory usage as well.

Also from my experience, issues with internet-based videos are usually problems with flash. I wish we could banish it and make HTML5 a new requirement by default, but that will take some time. Flash is dying a slow, slow death.

Yeah I was reading about how I need to find the activity monitor but I can't find it and I don't have Spotlight under my applications. Would it be anywhere else? Is there anything else I can do? Maybe just delete Flash?

spotlight is the little magnifying glass at the top right of your screen. It will search and find anything you need it to on your mac. It will also do math problems like a calculator and other stuff.

Actually, no.

It may be faster than other browsers, but it uses up more resources than other browsers. Which is the opposite of what of what OP needs.

Google Chrome and Firefox made it like that. I've been using only Safari and it doesn't seem to be acting up. Maybe it was just the plug-ins or some shit with those browsers.

check these out and pm me if you are still having trouble.1

pretty basic, but probably worth it before having a conversation about it.

I have found the newest version of firefox is the best browser on my macbook pro. safari literally can't browse the web because of some problem. chrome works, and until this version of firefox worked the best. now I have found that firefox is essentially as fast as chrome and uses less memory. chrome works fine until I try and watch 1080p movies. You would think a browser made by google would be the best for youtube!

it's also nice to support free software and the latest release of firefox basically shows that free software can compete with proprietary software.

I just had to google what "spotlight" was and I've used mac computers for basically my entire life. I thought it was called sherlock or something!

I have no idea what windows version of it or ubuntu version of it is and that doesn't mean I only browse the web in them.

Firefox drains the mad fuck out of your battery do.

I get 2 hours and 30 min. on Firefox tops, I still go easily over six with Safari.

yup, all the time. usually it just takes one or two line in the terminal to fix my problems and it's almost always on google but it's hard to find a solution when you aren't sure what the problem is.

so you mean when I stuff everything into a metal case real close together and those things generate heat it will get hot and stuff?

but seriously. I have a friend who was having the exact same problem. she said it was just her video card over heating.

pro-tip: command + spacebar = quick search in spotlight, regardless of what application youre running, except probably fullscreen, i havent tried it haha

I don't have this problem at all. Are you using firefox 19? I actually have the exact opposite problem but that's because safari is broken on my computer. I could pay for apple support or I could just configure firefox to look like safari which is what I did. As I said I thought firefox was the slowest until FF9 came out. Right now its using about 1GB of ram which is a lot better than safari web content using 5+GB of ram.

FF 20, battery problem has been the same for the last year or so.

Just checked memory usage with the exact same pages:

Safari total ram: 672mb

Firefox total ram: 659mb.

How do you get 5GB? Do you have twenty 4K HD 3D porn videos on at the same time?

Well first off, it's a MacBook. I have one, and it's kinda shitty sometimes. I saw a video that I think got deleted that linked me to a website which gives you something to help make your internet videos (YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix) faster. The website ishttp://mitchribar.com/2013/02/time-warner-cable-sucks-for-youtube-twitchtv/ . Open the terminal on your computer, on a MacBook you go to Finder>Applications> Utilities>Terminal and type in the codes, then verify your password. This technique will be used only to reject ip adressess that lag your videos (as far as I understand it). I can stream 720p easily now full screen. Highly recommended.
