but i was wondering about anything that i should know about this camera, like streingths or weaknesses that i wouldnt know about just from reading about the camera.

thanks

dude you are soooooo lucky i was gonna buy the hvr z1u but my parents wouldn't let me take money out of my bank account im so jealous

I have the same mic.

don't use anything auto on the camera, except for the auto focus every now and then. The auto functions absolutely blow. Set up a couple good picture profiles that you like and go out and mess around with it. The best way to learn is trial and error. Make sure you stick with one brand of tape, don't switch brands, ever.

It's not that hard of a camera to use if you are educated about the basics of film, but if you've never shot photography or anything like that, it may take you a while to get the feel for the camera. Read the manual top to bottom and you'll be off to a great start.

Strengths: Fairly easy to use, great LCD, tough as nails (I've put mine through it's paces), great image when shot correctly. Good in low light

Weaknesses: Lack of manual image adjustment, you can't do that much really, which sucks. Digi-zoom looks, well, very digital.

well, if you know all about exposure and setting white balance and all that good stuff, you just gotta learn where everything is. That's where reading the whole manual comes in.

Also, www.sonyhdvinfo.com and www.dvxuser.com have some great info about the Fx1 and filming in general.

keeps the video heads clean. different brands of tape use different lubricants, and some tapes don't use libricants at all. If you mix them, your heads get fucked and your footage will be glitchy with dropouts and such

pretty much, i think so. i took regular photography with film, so that was really one of the main things that you had to learn about or else you'll fuck up your film. which is no good.

ya, i also i wanna learn about using filters in order to really get some colors to pop. is there stuff on those websites about those? and thanks again you guys for the valuable info.

also are all of those vidoes on your profile filmed on the fx1?

two things; manual white balance and manual f-stop. with both of those you'll get good color and good exposure. if possible use manual focus.

The camera is solid and can do almost anything you want it too.  You can shoot in Cineframe 24/30 w/ cinematone under the picture profile settings(button on back of camera)  it imitates 24p and gives it a warmer film style look.  Only downside is you cant ramp your footage or put it in slow mo if you shoot in the cineframe mode.  I usually only use that feat for rails/lifestyles.  To get best slow mo/ramping video quality i'd say shoot the shutter speed around 1/350 or higher, and adjust your whitebalance/nd filter/ iris to the necessary settings to acheive your best color/lighting.  also a cool feat is the white fade in/fade out transition.  When shooting it gives that film like clipping between shots and can make for a cool white pop!  I always use the manual focus ring and would reccomend it.  I'd say the only realy downside of the camera is the zoom ring having a bit of a delay when zooming in pretty quick.  hit me up for more if your interested!
