Anyone in the Portland area know of any places that rent cars to under 21?

I ask because I’m tryna make a trip to hood in May and don’t 100% trust my car to make the 5700 mile round trip trek from PA. Sounds super boring but flying might be my best option. Anyone know of any rental locations that rent to 19 year olds?

Save up or take out a personal loan on a reliable car, use it for your trip then sell it when you get back. If you just use it for a summer registration and insurance will be cheap and you should be able to sell it for what you bought it for or close to it. I'd imagine it'd be hard to find someone who will rent to someone who's 19. Maybe there's a way your parents can help? Idk

Ye I’ve thought about that too or finding a parent who would let us take a car. My subie will have 110,000 on it by May. Transmission is fine, new head gaskets at 90,000. It’s just a real small chance my car breaks down or some shit in the middle of Nebraska.

Both my cars have over 230,000 miles, I'd trust either to go cross country tomorrow. Do proper maintenance and send it. You'll be fine. Or you won't and you'll have a great story.

That’s honestly nothing. Just send it dude. But yeah fat chance about the car rental. It’s hard enough renting when you’re under 25

Yo, I think your car is gonna be fine. I drove across the country a few times in a 1998 volvo with 400000 miles, and just did it again in a newer one (with a reputation for unreliability) with around 150000 miles. No issues either way. You shouldn't have any trouble, especially if the HGs just got worked over. However, if you really don't want to take your car, Uhaul will rent to under 21s. Rented one to tow my first car home across Michigan/Ontario when I was 18. All they want is a credit card and a pulse.

I too think his subie will be fine, but volvos are on a whole other level mannn

Send it OP, solo or with some buddies, the adventure driving across the states will be something you will look back on for the rest of your life. Hood will just be the cherry on top. Ive ridden motorcycles all across the states, its all about the adventure, not the destination.

One of my buddies made the drive with a blown headgasket, windows down heater on full blast adding coolant at every stop.

The only luck I've had renting even as a 21 year old was when my truck was in the shop. They aren't cheap tho, especially these days. Im glad I only needed it for like 2 days. Friends working for Enterprise and Hertz say customers routinely rack up bills $5000+. Tbf I don't see OP renting a Tahoe.

UHaul maybe?

This might be not a bad option. I did the math, if I rented a UHaul van for 10 days it would be way cheaper than renting out a normal rental car. If parentals don’t let me take my sube we doing this

Only until about 1998. After that they got stuffed with electronic crap (being owned by Ford didn't help), so they aren't any more reliable than any other euro car. Their reputation for reliability came from the 240/redblock 4cyl engines, and once they started trying more complex stuff (starting with the 850), it went downhill.

Edit: renting the uhaul as in getting a flight and using that as our vehicle

You should be able to take a bus to Sandy and then the mt hood express up to town. I think the express goes as far as sandy.

Alsonit the craziest fast drive. Might be anke to catch a ride up. There are even people working at the mtn driving up from near portland.

Road trips are pretty sick though. I def think a big road trip is always a pretty legit option but flying woukd be quicker and cheaper.

If you do a basic inspection and tuneup, it wont really be a mystery.

Check Plugs, coil packs, tranny fluid, give er a fresh oil/filter swap, coolant, check struts for leaks and sagging, check cv axles for ripped boots or clunking noises, check all the suspension for anything broken or loose or wobbley, etc. It's all easy to do/check and no wild tools are required. Everything you want to know is on the internet and it's hard to fk it up.

I'm guessing they did plugs while they were in there for the HG so that may not even be a concern.

Lastly, tires and brakes are everything...

If you come in on a weekend Ill give you a ride up to hood, and then you can camp in the woods and hitchhike up to tline every day

yeah for real. at that point it wasn’t really volvo anymore haha. the ol 240s run foreverrrrr

mine broke down in the middle of no where in Washington on my way there, just bring a good set of tools and a friend who knows cars and youll be chillin.

I recommend always traveling with at least one car itll make a huge difference if shit goes down.

Did quebec to northern BC and back this summer in an 85 camaro with rust holes in the floor, no temp gauge or speedometer. Have a lil faith in the subie and basic mechanical skills, youll be vibing along on an absolutely unforgettable trip.

-Arrive at PDX. Wow, neat carpet!

-Take the tram to Gresham.

-Take a bus to Sandy.

-Take a bus to Govy.

-Take a shuttle to Timberline

-Go skiing.

-Pass out on the Govy Loop after mysteriously teleporting from the T Line lot to Charlies

I feel like my check engine light coming on today is karma for bragging in this post. Maybe don't do a cross country trip in a 234,000 mile bmw tomorrow.
