If you are, you will appreciate my new blog: http://epicmarketingfails.blogspot.com/

I just started but it will have a bunch of marketing fails and then be backed up with how these marketers could have avoided failure. Basically you get to learn at other people's expense. I'm trying to make it funny AND educational. We'll see how it goes.

The first post is a QR code that is on the on-ramp of a highway. Check it out if you'd like. Thanks.

niceee ill follow this every week =)

you take your cellphone to scan the QR and then you get cut by a cop because you were playing/texting on your phone lolz

I'm not sure what's more appalling. The fact that the service provider thought that was a good idea, or the fact that there are people that are so lazy that they will pay $65 to avoid changing their own wheels out.

my grandparents use that kind of service. some people are lazy and some are just unable to do that job

seems entertaining enough to follow you for a bit. I too am in marketing and would have done the same thing you did.

just copy paste everyhting you post on blogger to tumblr. it will give you a broader viewer base.

hahaha - yeah see in that regard it was SO bad that the marketer in me just had to find out who thought it was a good idea.

I can see what they were trying to go for. I didnt read your descriptions other than following hte link the QR code gave you. Their market is people who are changing tires on the sides of highways... Interesting idea but absolutely poorly executed.

And ill follow.

i wrote my bachelor thesis in marketing and i am somehow disappointed with the area.

i feel like you dont need any skills to be good, at least none of which you can learn at school.

and its always sort of the same and overpaid as fuck.

What's wrong with being overpaid? ahaha.

Where did you work man? I find that makes a big difference. I have been at a few different spots and sometimes you just have to change the scenery and atmosphere.

Gotta agree with you on the school thing though, I leverage very few skills from my university days studying International Business with a concentration in marketing in my current job. In a way that's a good thing because I found the stuff in university super boring and unapplicable in everyday life.

yeah thats the only thing, i didnt work at an agency so far or in a marketing dep. but we worked very close with an agency for a project in university and had weekly presentations of professionals and idk, maybe i have to see it with my own eyes before i judge it.

i am now making my master in finance though. a little diversification cant hurt.

I'm gonna try and post something every Sunday.

BTW some guy in the comments section thought that a QR code on the highway on-ramp was a good idea. Feel free to comment ;)

Not intentionally trying to be that big of a smart ass but:

It got your attention didn't it?

I guarantee if that company had merely put a billboard up in the same spot, we wouldn't be hearing about it.

idk about that whole "attention" thing.

this is a little overplayed imo. a company could have its CEO kill 20 sheep with bare hands infront of the headquarters and yes, it would garner attention.

of course, attention is a strong thing today with all those ads everywhere, but just because you have someones attention doesnt mean he will buy your products.

best recent/NS-related example: pimp hands. they sell gloves bitch.

It only got my attention because it was so bad, and rattle my marketing mind so much, that I spent 25 minutes finding a close place to park, walking up the highway on-ramp and scanning the thing. I can pretty much guarantee no one else did that, and therefore the company got absolutely no attention.

If they had put a billboard in that same location, at least they would get some brand awareness. The QR code could be for ANY company in the world, unless you are able to scan it, it doesn't do anything for them... except get them on my blog.

Yeah exactly. There is good attention and there is bad attention. And then there is getting attention but no one is buying anything so that attention doesn't mean anything.

In this particular case, they aren't getting ANY attention because you can't figure out who the company is unless you scan the code, which we have discovered is impossible.
