Anyone here with a vegan diet?

I mean, I'm basically vegan. I eat a lot of meat, and all of the meat I eat comes from herbivores. Think about it. Herbivores eat vegan diets consisting of grass, grains, and berries. Their bodies process this into super-concentrated vegan food (meat). Me, being a human and of superior intellect, have these animals do all the work for me. They eat a shit ton of vegan stuff, process it into just what is needed, then present me with the concentrate.
Think of it this way. Would you rather have orange juice from concentrate, or pure, fresh squeezed orange juice? I'm just a really smart vegan. I have heard that mountain lion tastes really good, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I suppose I would break my vegan ways for that.

How is eating a mountain lion breaking your vegan ways? Duhh

This actually doesn't make sense, even the parts that are supposed to. It's way better to eat the plants straight up because then 90% of the energy isn't wasted on keeping those other animals alive = plant diet can feed way more people with way less land = heckyeahamerica

Your place shouldn't be greasy if he has a range hood and what kind of meat is he cooking on the stove top anyway, ground beef?

Like you said, your roommate before was fine because she cleaned up properly, so I think what you mean is that you don't want to live with assholes like your current baking-sheet elitist roommate anymore.

dude I don't give a shit. I have no problems that other people want to eat meat. I'll never complain if I go to someone else's house and it's greasy and smells like meat. It's my choice who I want to live with. Is it self-righteous to not want to live with someone who smokes, or someone who always parties, or a slob who doesn't clean up?

It's not like i'm totally opposed to living with a non-vegetarian. As I said, my last room mate ate meat and I had no problem living with her. She cleaned up and took care when cooking with meat. This guy is a fucking carnivore, like the kind of guy who makes fun of vegetarians and eats meat at every meal, and yes that sucks for me. I guess it's mostly his fault. I mean it's possible that someone like him would always remember to cook with the fan on, and always properly wash all the shit off the pans. I've seen him cut raw beef and then just rinse the knife off without any soap or anything.

Still, one sure way to avoid this problem in the future is to live with a vegetarian. Plus it brings up the option of sharing meals to save time/money. It's not about being self-righteous, it's about finding a good match for a room mate.

yes I guess you are correct.

We have a range hood. It's loud and he doesn't turn it on unless I ask him to. It's usually ground beef, or chicken fingers in the oven.

This is not the first room mate I have had like this. Another one always made bacon and shit without the fan on. In fact the best room mate I had was also the one who ate the least amount of meat, like once a day instead of every meal.

But when I am looking at potential room mates, all else being equal I would choose the vegetarian over the meat eater. I don't know that the meat eater would be lazy like this, but if they are a vegetarian it guarantees that I wont have this problem. Unless they are like a vegetarian who likes deep frying stuff all the time haha.

what you have to remember is that being a vegan is only 50% diet. The other 50% is being condescending towards everyone else.

so I'm right there with you, I'm like half vegan already.

i dont really see why it matters to other people, my dad gives me so much shit for not eating red meat. If someones not comfortable eating meat, why should they be insulted? its just food get over it.

nah we've just all turned resentful from too many years of vegan condescension. it's true-- but at this point the opposite may be true as well.

I didn't read all 3 pages so you may have answered this but are you planned on being a strict vegan as in you won't eat honey? I work in fine dining and Vegans come in often and request a chefs plate where the head chef basically makes a full vegan meal of the top of his head. I'm just curious because Honey doesn't really come from the bee but rather the bees labor. And me not being a vegan am always curious as to how vegan people view certain foods, like one of my friends is vegan but will eat Oreo's which I've heard from other vegans those are a no go

Oreos are vegan friendly. It's amazing, but I suppose every group has to have at least one good "food." I have several friends who are committed vegans. From my experience, they spend a vast amount of money and time preparing vegan meals that they rave about. In the end, the meals taste sub-par at best and really nasty at worst. This isn't to say that there aren't good vegan foods, but they do tend to pale in comparison with more normal fare.
The health benefits of being vegan are questionable. Humans are built to eat meats. Yes, there are alternatives that for the most part take care of one's needs, but they are often lacking in some regard. OP, if you're looking for a trendy diet, look into being a Locavore. I have a great deal more respect for these people, and the diet makes sense logically.
Also, almost all vegans, as has been noted, are pretentious, stuck-up, and hang around other vegans almost exclusively. This way they can pat each other on the back constantly, and no one ever questions them. Vegans, almost entirely, are anti-hunting, anti-progress, and anti-EVERYTHING. They hate on a tremendous number of things, without offering any viable alternatives that work for society as a whole, rather than one secular group.
Even though I have good friends who are vegan, I still tend to look unfavorably upon someone who tells me they are vegan. Also, vegan girls are about the least attractive demographic out there. Seriously, veganism says nothing about no razors, dental work, etc. That doesn't even start with the Better-Than-Thou attitude that goes without saying.

I don't know too many. But I have a good friend who is a vegetarian. Thank the lord she's not a vegan because the vegetarianism is bad enough already.

I really had to go out of my way to have her as a bridesmaid at my wedding. I had a vegetarian lasagna prepared for the rehearsal dinner only for her, she was the only vegetarian-- so kind of a lot of effort/money & waste. Then at the wedding I had a vegetarian option pretty much for only her, I think she was the only guest out of 200+ that were vegetarian.

At my bridal shower, which isn't even hosted by me, I'm a guest. I brought veggie burgers because I knew the hosts wouldn't know to have something for her.

When I have dinner parties or have people over for appetizers and cocktails before going out or something, I always do vegetarian egg rolls or something else for her.

If I don't do these things, she looks at the food and mopes and says "i cant have this im a vegetarian" and then she'll ask what else i have.

I just think maybe vegans and vegetarians should start carrying ice chests around with food in it so the burden isn't placed on the host to accomodate every diet. Especially when it's just one person in a large group.

At least she was willing to wear the leather shoes and dress with leather detailing as a bridesmaid.

I've heard otherwise because of the cream straining process during manufacturing that it is strained through ground beef bones. Now why that is I couldn't tell you nor have a looked it up because 1. I'm not vegan and 2. Oreos are delicious in a tall glass of cold milk so who cares?

where are you from? where I live there are so many vegetarians that any large event will just automatically include a vegetarian option.

Hell even the last time I was in calgary, 6 out of 20 people at a dinner I went to were vegetarian. Usually people make everything but one dish vegetarian anyways right? The only time I bring food with me is if it is a bbq or something.

I'm from Seattle.

And I don't know what you're talking about here (reply above)-- it's the other way around. All but one dish are usually not vegetarian.

most appetizers I can think of are not vegetarian: smoked salmon, sushi, crab cakes, beef tips, chicken skewers, prawns, deviled eggs (could be considered vegetarian but not if they err on the side of vegan with no eggs/mayo), bacon wrapped anything, scallops

I guess some vegetarians eat seafood though

Random I think that's what he was saying. Also from Seattle where it seems being vegan is quite popular since we have 5 million hipsters

I think it is pretty popular among the hipsters, but out of all my hipster friends I just have the one who is a vegetarian.

but isn't caesar salad basically the most common/popular salad to have at a buffet style dinner-- they wont eat it because it had anchovies in the dressing and often times it has chicken in it. For vegans it has: mayo, anchovies, egg, cheese, sometimes chicken...

other common dishes are pasta salads which often times have chicken, bacon, egg or mayo.

scalloped potatoes are common and often have bacon or ham and for vegans they are covered in cheese.

that's weird. I knew most ceasar salad dressing had anchovies, but i've never seen it with chicken. I know this because i'm alergic to chicken and ate it all of the time and never got sick.

I'm also from right near you (victoria) so I think the cultures are probably similar.

I guess really if there was only one vegetarian then it should be up to them to deal with it. Thankfully vegetarians are increasing in numbers so maybe in the future it will be more common to make more of the food vegetarian.

It would be my guess that in the Seattle area, most ironic hipster vegetarians eat seafood, which a.) makes it pretty easy to be a vegetarian in Seattle, and b.) makes it pretty difficult to spot one. You can just order clams/shrimp/crab/scallops/salmon/halibut/trout/tuna/sushi wherever you go.

the only times I haven't been able to have the ceasar salad at a buffet is because it had bacon on it. And I've been avoiding chicken for 20 more years than bacon.

so what you meant is that you've never seen a caesar with chicken in it in a buffet. fair enough, i suppose that's possible. it is pretty common though from the ones that i've been to. There are quite a few common dishes that are vegetarian, but vegan- that shit seems impossible!

vegan is nuts but there are some nice 'surprises' like most bread products factory made, pb and j is good to go awwwwyea

after 40 days i'm feeling pretty good. not much has changed. My blood pressure dropped back to ideal and I've lost about a pound which i'm pretty sure is fat because I can see my abs a little more.

no boobs yet. although I have had barely any soy. maybe once or twice a week on average.

I am seeing a few health benefits, but overall it's not much different.

For any vegetarians who want to try and switch. Daiya will be your best friend. Pizza tastes just as good.

I've been vegan for 6 months. I do feel smarter than omnovouts haha but this is why! Its easy, I feel great, I haven't been sick or had allergies or even a headache in 5 months. I sleep better and have more energy, I look fantastic even though my knee is fucked and i haven't been working out. I get to eat as much as i want whenever I want and my cooking skills have become legendary status. I haven't participated in the shitty meat industry in any way! DOWNSIDE I haven't eaten bacon in 5 months.. totally worth it. So yeah vegans get all uppity because its so simple and the benefits to cost ratio should make it an obvious decision. I'm never going back.

Oh, so we should just drink milk from female humans instead?

"we've recently discovered that bone strength is not strongly linked to calcium, but instead Vitamin D which can be obtained by foods other than dairy products."

We've? Who is 'we'? *inb4 you google your little heart away trying to find a source that correlates that retarded fucking statement.

Not strongly? The fact that it is pretty much voids what you're trying to say. Who cares if it can be obtained through other sources? I'm sure most of the people that drink it in their adulthood don't drink it because they just have to have their vitamin D.

Get a hobby.

bump for tofu fucking scrambles. this is coming from a tofu hater as well.

vegan is the best. never going back.

Damn, everyone in here is raging about these righteous vegans that they know but I have really never run into that. Most of my friends are vegetarian or vegan and I am vegan as well, and we're all mostly in it for the health benefits so most of us could give a fuck what everyone else eats. I think people that are that self righteous would preach regardless of whether or not it was about veganism. They would just pick up something else to frump about.

That being said though, to anyone who claims to be open minded and willing to try something new, give it a shot. Even if its only for 2 or 3 weeks, if you do some research and do it right you will feel healthier and more energized than you ever have before.

I have come and gone from vegetarian, to vegan to full meat eater and back around a million times, and I will admit that I love the taste of meat and don't resent any of you out there who do too, but I can see myself sticking with veganism just because you feel so damn healthy and invigorated once you cut the animal products out of your diet that it honestly outweighs the taste of meat for me.

Hahaha is calling someone "bloodmouth" actually a thing? Can it please be if it isn't? I really want to be called bloodmouth by a hippie in a drug rug while eating a leg of lamb.
