Anyone here rock/ice/alpine climb?

Tell me what routes youve done, where you climb, stories, experiences, anything. Post pictures and videos too! I live in the Adirondacks and do a fair amount of trad climbing and bouldering.

Climbing has become a passion of mine. Love bouldering and top-roping, still scared of leading but I'm getting into it outside and a little bit in the gym. I about shit myself when I took my first lead fall outside.

I'm getting back into alpine after I took a stupid and nasty fall a couple of years back. Didnt climb for a few years. When I was in the Dolomites 2 years ago I was afraid of heights. Now I can handle it again though. This summer I was in the Aosta, Italy, Gran Paradiso area. We made a bivacco tour, walked some glacier, climbed some passes and peaks. Nothing really spectacular yet but it was good to train all techniques again.

I pretty much climb at a gym. Starting to get into Sport climbing. Trad scares the piss out of me.

I've really got into it more recently, dad used to be big on it in the uk so kinda through him. Climbed my first 6b without falling today pretty stoked tbh. Hitting up some gritstone in a month gonna be rad af

I boulder a lot, have done quite a bit of sport, comfortable on trad, just started ice climbing this past winter. Really wanted to but didn't get a chance to get on any alpine climbs this year.

Climb a lot, but don't take many pictures or I would share them with you all

I used to do some decent rock climbing in the daks. Also went down to AIR a few times. HAdn't really climbed in 10 years. Just hit the rock gym near me the other day and it felt good.

I climb 5-6 days a week. Mostly gym over the summer and winter but tis' the season of sending right now. I go to school in Burlington, Vt. and we just got a brand new gym, (Metrorockstation). Been heading to rumney, NH to get my outdoor fix and get my ass kicked by harder grades!

Where you climb at?

I really want to get into alpine climbing. Like really bad. The problem is its a pain in the ass to fine a mentor when you are still in high school. I'm starting to do some ski mountaineering on the east coast, so thats a good thing, but I really want to get deeper into the sport.

Same problem i have/had, i did however make friends with a guy who has become my unofficial mentor for ice climbing and hopefully soon alpine climbing

Its all about getting into the community and making friends

Yes, your age does make it tremendously difficult. It is very difficult to find an ice climbing mentor regardless of age, but probably impossible at your age. The liability is just far too great and there is simply no way to make ice climbing a "safe" sport. If you were 18+ I'd take you out climbing. I'm very proficient in the alpine and lead hard ice and mixed.

Dude AIR is so much fun. The tunnels give it a truly unique expierence.

I climb in the Dacks. I was actually just at metrorock for there grand opening and it was wicked fun. I havent really climbed anywhere else to be honest i dont know how i feel about being around crowded crags. its gotta be cool meeting a ton of cool people at rumney and the gunks but whenever i climb in the dacks its a crazy expierence because theres such long approaches and you really feel like your out there, you might see a few people out here (depending on where your climbing). But i really would like to go to rumney to check it out and improve my leading skills i think it would be a great place to try some harder climbs. Have you ever gone bouldering in Smuggs Notch? Id really like to check that place out as well.

I was in that same position last year. I just bought an alpine touring set up and im planing on skiing some slides in the Adirondacks. Im definitely looking to get more into mountaineering seeing as im going to have to hike up some of these slides before I ski down them because a lot of them are not accessible by trail. Also if you want to get into mountaineering check out NOLS. Ive had a lot of friends have done trips with them and have absolutely loved it.

Damn man Metro is my gym! Im there every night. Next time you are in vermont shoot me a pm. what grade do you climb about?

Smuggs is fun! definitely some sketchy landings but its a fun area. worth heading up to. Rumney is the place though. It is going to take a bit to figure out where to go and what to do. I basically went there 2 trips and got on maybe 6 total climbs. Just so much to look at. Now though I have ideas on some of the more popular walls but still get caught up in exploring.

As for the crowds its really not bad. Just try and stay away from main cliff and easier climbs at bonsai. Orange crush and waimea are super fun and just amazing to look at.

I did a NOLS backpacking course 2 years ago, and it's great because now I can go out backpacking with friends where I plan the trip, and I can lead it. It's great at my age too because I have a lot more to learn. I'm considering doing a program with the Mountain Training School, which is essentially a school that provides AMGA certification, but also 40 day courses.

Once I get to college I'll be fine, but it's too bad because I'd love to get into while still in high school. I'm gonna keep trying though! I've got a few pretty crazy east coast trips planned now so we'll have to see

I totally agree with you. Not to sound like a brat or whatever, but I have probably one or two friends my age who I'd take out backpacking. They simply have no experience and won't be able to make decisions in times where it's necessary. If I were your age, I wouldn't be taking out anyone under 18 either, there are just too many things that could happen.

*sorry for dub post

Dont let age turn you away, I started ice climbing when I was 16. Even though it is ridiculously hard to find a mentor at your age it isn't impossible, especially if you already have a decent knowledge on a rope. Just get out in the community and meet people

Ive only been climbing for about a year now. Im able to boulder up to v3 comfortably and some v4s. On lead the hardest ive climbed was 5.9 but im trying to push myself. Ill def PM you if you want to climb at metro. Also if you ever want to bouldering in the dacks im like 15 minutes from mckenzie pond. Ive got a pretty huge pad and ive got a ton of friends with pads. Just let me know id love to meet and climb.

I boulder at the school gym and am trying to get into canyoning, I have a buddy who has done quite a bit and is up to haul me around, right now looking at belay devices and maybe a new harness, any suggestions?

go to an outfitter and hang in a bunch of harnesses and see which is most comfortable and use that one because pressure points suck. as for a belay device the bd atc guide or petzl reverso are two do all devices or get a grigri or trango cinch if you want autolocking

Perfect, was already pretty set on the bd guide atc, as far as harnesses go, I have gone years with a really crappy ancient, unpadded harness so basically I am looking for something cheap and padded

Used to speed climb for comps, but trying to get into Ice climbing this year. Living in Bozeman puts me by some of the best in the world.

Its worth it! Totally different but kinda the same as climbing on rock, if you have someone who is willing to take you out jump on it!

Trying to get in to ice climbing. Been playing on the foam wall at school and really loving it, It just seems hard to get into, both expensive, and not many people do it so it's harder to learn.

I can rent tools and boots/crampons from school but no protection, so it looks like I need to figure out a place to top rope

I used to climb but it was friends gear. Went to a rock gym, a few months ago and it was the first time I'd climbed in like 10 years(maybe not the first but I can't remember shit)

I shit my pants at the thought of ice climbing. Trying to get more into alpine climbing. Always been hiking shit but trying to get some gear and do some of the bigger mountains out there. Goal is to eventually do some of the easier 14ers in the states then eventually Rainier and Aconcagua.

I think it's doable. I don't really know anyone into it but I thin I can make it happen if I save some loot. Already wanted to do a trip to south america at some point. If I can get some other bigger climbs under my belt before I'm down to take a stab at the big guy down therrrr.

Have any tips to help me excel quickly?

Right on man, welcome to the sport. But yes, don't worry about excelling quickly, you're going to hurt yourself. Other important things for someone starting out: climb with straight arms, focus on your footwork, focus on your footwork, focus on your footwork, and focus on your footwork. There are some pretty good videos on Youtube that you would benefit from, just search rock climbing technique or something similar.

As for the op, I've been climbing (trad, sport, and bouldering) for a long time and plan on climbing for the rest of my life. Been all over the place: Joe's Valley, Rumney, the Red, Haycock, GOTG, Flatirons, Eldo, Dolomites, etc... Can't get enough, will never get enough. Great to see there's such an active climbing community on NS nowadays!

If anyone in the Burlington, VT area is ever headed to Metrorock, hit me up! I set there and climb almost everyday!
