anyone here know video and dvd encoding/decoding?

does anyone here know anything about encoding dvds to mpeg or avi. i want to be a ble to drop the size of my ski videos from dvd to an mpeg or avi, so i could have my collection with me where ever on a couple of dvds. if you have an expirience, especially with mac, please give me a hand.
