i'm a junior in HS and i'm thinking about byu in a couple years for some type of engineering possibly...

whats byu like?

partying? i know its affiliated with mormons...

what percent is mormons?

how far from skiing?

or any other general info that could sway my opinion either way.

and i say "whatever" to all the "its all mormons you can't do shit there." you people don't even go there so keep quiet.

haha.. Basically if you yourself are not LDS i wouldnt suggest it.

they have price breaks for kids that are mormon, and its pretty strict on a lot of rules that probably make sense if you are mormon, but otherwise you might not be down.

I go to westminster and its a good spot forsure, lotta fun. not any engineering programs to speak of tho... I'd check out the U of U if i was you.

If your not mormon, it would definitely be wierd. There is partying in utah county, just pretty dang hard to find, or you go out of your way to find it. its almost all mormon, not necissarily bad, but they have an honor code, meaning if you drink, have sex, smoke dope, or have long hair, your out of hte school. check out UVU, the u, westminster, or something else, if your set on utah county, uvu is the way to go. easier, cheaper, and can set up a schedule to ski better. thats what i do.

Oh yea, and at westmin i ski 5-7 days a week, super discount passes and the mtns are like 30 minutes away.

UofU has a solid engineering program and SLC is a much better location than Provo where I believe byu is. And to be honest I think it would be weird to go there if you weren't lds and into it, I remember looking at it when seeing what schools were in utah and you have to take lots of bible classes and stuff... not for me.

Utah Valley University is also a really good school, i dont know what kind of engineering program they have but i'm getting a Bachelor of Science in Digital Media. Havn't transfered there yet but have visited the campus and am stoked on it. It's in Orem, UT which is not that bad a drive at all from where in live in the SLC valley, all interstate driving.

Campus is ok, all connected indoors and stuff, and its only 45 mins from pc resorts through provo canyon, or a little bit longer to the cottonwoods. Or you can always grab a sundance pass and hit that up on good days, sooooooo fun.

U of U actually has a real good engineering school. if ur not a mormon i wouldnt even think about byu for a second.

thanks for all the replies guys! i gave you some "stuff"

so yeah i'm catholic, not mormon, so i guess by your opinions it'd be kinda weird at BYU. i looked just a little into all the colleges you guys mentioned. UofU looks good - a good school and close to the mountains. how long is the drive from there to say snowbird or PC? westminster looks good too, but it's much smaller so i assume its a very different experience from U of U? theyre both in SLC, does the drive to the mountains differentiate much between them? UVU is big too, but perhaps a bit weaker? i'm not 100% sure though...drive appears to be about the same but SLC seems sick. UVU is in Orem, which i guess a smaller cityish type thing?

thanks again guys, you've been a really big help.

Out of all those schools I think U of U is best. I'm a bit partial since I go there, but it's located in pretty much downtown SLC. There's fun things to do all the time, and it's right off the trax line so easy transportation to/from the city. Westminster is like 5 minutes from the U... the drive to the ski areas is about the same from both schools. Westminster might be about 5 minutes faster, but it's not really anything that should sway your decision one way or the other.

Westminster is small, but everyone I talk to that goes there says they love it. The U of U is pretty big, mostly a commuter school, but the little sub-culture of skiers/boarders is pretty local and super fun. There're frequently parties near campus. Overall I would take a good look at the U. It's a great school, has a good engineering program, and the dorms there are the best... ever.

Stick to SLC, westminster, slcc, u of u. Stay AWAY from byu, pure mormons who are very mormom. UVU is kind of south and wouldnt be as fun as anywhere in slc at all. U of U is a normal big college, dont believe the rumors you hear.

if you're looking for the "college experience" like parties and meeting lots of people then i would suggest UofU if you dont really give a shit then UVU and UofU are at the same level now. They didn't used to be, Utah Valley University used to be Utah Valley State College but converted to a full University 3 or 4 years ago.

BYU is nearly 100 percent mormon. If you have a girl in your room past 10, or at any point with the door closed, you will face disciplinary action. You will be straight kicked out for alcohol or drugs.

just visiting? If you don't look like them, they will kick you off campus. if your hair is too long, they will kick you off campus.
I would like to say I'm talking out of my ass based on rumors, but I have heard this first hand from people. That's how gnarly strict it is. Everyone is pretty similar, and the party scene is pretty much non-existent.
It's also pretty far away from skiing.

If you are Catholic, you will totally not get the religion, and it will likely make you unhappy. I would suggest looking into the U, if you want a fun college experience at all. Westminster is cool too, just small. Either way you will run into a lot of LDS people, who are generally really nice and cool to chill with. I have lots of LDS friends. But I promise you won't enjoy going to school at BYU. I know lots of people that are LDS themselves that would never go to BYU, because it's just not what they are looking for, and it's over the top.

BYU is just too strict period. Im lds, i got accepted to byu, and decided to not go there so i can ski more (easier classes, better class times to ski etc.) must be clean shaven (or have a beard card hahahah im not kidding about that), short hair, no tattoos or piercings, no opposite gender in your room, no sex, no drugs/alcohol, have to have an ecclesiastical endorsement meaning your church leader whether your LDS or not has to say your ok to go there, and have to agree to all these rules or your out of the school. A ton of people can get around it, but whats the point of going there in the first place if your not going to follow all the rules? If your in utah county might as well go to uvu, where its tons easier, cheaper, they hand out a ton of scholarships, and the class schedules are super duper flexible. BYU is good for people that are looking for a super clean structured atmosphere, but if you plan on coming out here to ski a ton, I definitely would stay away from the Y, whether your LDS super mormon, or not religious at all...

kinda blown out of proportion. i went to byu and had long hair basically from october to april every year. the only time you'd really run into problems is at the testing center. good thing i was a chinese major and didn't have to go there much.

i'm lds and was really hesitant to go to byu at first but it really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. there are a lot of gay rules but overall life on campus was fun. lots of cool people. some total wangers but guess what? just don't hang out with the wangers and you won't have much problem.

UVU and U of U are both good choices too. obviously U of U will be closer to skiing but I can make it to any resort in an hour or less.

well that's good to hear. I've only been down there once, but I was told all that from people that actually attended school there, guess they were spicing up the details a little.

when comparing byu to other colleges of it's size, it doesn't really seem out of proportion. if you're not the religion or really intrigued by the religion it's not a good choice...you will most likely end up unhappy. and you definitely won't get a "normal" college experience.

go to school in slc. it takes me about thirty minutes tops to get to any of the awesome resorts we have up here. pretty much everyone in this thread knows what's up.

i wasn't comparing to other colleges. i said that the "facts" he was stating were blown out of proportion. both he and i got it so... also, just painting a more realistic picture of byu so he can make his choice off more accurate info. yep

I went to BYU for a sports camp last summer and let me tell you its pretty dope theres not alot to do and everyone is pretty strict ive had cousins go there too and have gotten in trouble for small things like swearing and such. wouldnt reccomend it

out of all schools in Utah, U of U is by far the best..and I dont even go there. I go to westminster and the first semester.. it was fucking awesome. Then the last 2 semesters have been gay as aids. Its too small. Its 1000 people smaller than my fucking high school. Its boring, classes are too small, and every semester at finals times you'll have massive group projects, group projects fucking blow. The food is bad too. It is closer to the mountains, but I dont know, maybe I just think its too smallbecause my old school at 35,000. Big school atmosphere is where its at I believe.
